The Taliban is attempting to keep the jihad alive in Afghanistan by murdering construction workers. The focus on non-combatants accord with the provisions of Islamic law that forbid killing them unless they are considered to be aiding the war effort. This is used to justify bombings on buses in Israel, and by Osama for his attacks in the U.S. From the Guardian:
An Australian helicopter pilot was killed and a British security officer seriously injured in southern Afghanistan yesterday after their team, working for an American construction company, was attacked by a gunman. An American woman employed to build cottage hospitals was also seriously injured in the attack, while another Briton, a security guard, was unharmed, a US diplomat in Kabul said yesterday.The diplomat said the helicopter belonged to the Louis Berger Group, an American company carrying out road-building and other construction projects in southern Afghanistan, where the remnants of the former Taliban regime and other Islamic extremist groups are active.
Mullah Mohamed Omar, the Taliban's fugitive leader, has pronounced death penalties on anybody, Afghan or foreign, working to support the government of Hamid Karzai.
Khalid Pashtoon, a spokesman for the government of Kandahar province, where the attack occurred, said the team of four foreigners and an Afghan interpreter were inspecting a school in a remote village about 40 miles south-west of the province's capital, Kandahar.
After inspecting the school, the team boarded the helicopter, which was then attacked by a man with a Kalashnikov rifle. He fled after killing the pilot and injuring two other foreigners.
"The helicopter had not taken off when it was attacked," said Mr Pashtoon.
Abdul Samad, a man claiming to speak for the Taliban, told the Associated Press news agency that the militia was responsible for the attack.
American troops, more than 10,000 of whom are stationed in Afghanistan, airlifted the wounded to Kandahar airbase, where they were being treated, the diplomat in Kabul said.
Louis Berger group has been awarded some of the most lucrative reconstruction contracts in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban two years ago.
This includes a $250m (£135m) contract to resurface one of the country's main roads, which runs from Kabul to Kandahar, but the project has been blighted by the Taliban's frequent kidnapping of foreign and Afghan workers.
More than 550 people have died in an insurgency blamed on the militia in less than seven months, and Taliban fighters have vowed to step up the campaign in the run-up to democratic elections in June.

You are wrong. Islam exalts suicide aka "martyrdom" (shahid). I refer you to Koran 47:4-6. As the Koran is the actual, received word of the Islamic god, there can be no prevarication or nuanced interpretation to deny that those who commit suicide in the cause of Islam are sent to paradise. The Koran contains at least six other references to martyrdom in the cause of jihad. Lunacy, but fact.
The foundation of this suicide directive is Koran 9:29 and, more generally Ua-S o9.8: "The caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians..." At least these People of the Book have a chance to survive, through conversion to Islam or payment of the jizya (poll tax). Heaven help one who is Buddhist, Sikh, Mormon- the penalty for them is death or slavery.

Looking at the post of some, up till know i have only seen condemnation of islam, and the defence of the crusade, with the claim that it was in retaliation to Islamic expanision, unfortunately the person who made that claim has not read of the crusades, what they did, why they have become classified as some of the most distinctly disgusting sections of History. I constanly see a hope on the side of the American that muslims conform to their own standards, as it becomes acceptable that they join there society at that point, but i also see warnings and condemnation of acceptance of islamic standards, regardless what aspect that may be, it continues to be condemned. Islam is a vast religion, and it is not in itself sufficient to read the quraan without the aid of an interpretation, and history is witness to what translations caused. Ill try highlight this best i can. "And ye shull chace your enemies, and they shull fall before you by the sword. And five of you shull chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shull put 10 000 to flight: and and your enemies shull fall before the sword" Leviticus 27:7-8 This verse was previously translated in a way that it justified killing anyone who didnt conform to the christian standard ( i do not have that translation, but i know that it was one of the main verses in the old testement that justified the crusade) Today that was forunately corrected to what you see above (still supports killing enemies, but is rather vague as to the conditions, and comes without a context from what i read) Likewise islam has verses in that light, but like the Bible it has verses that relate to different events. Some were revealed at times of battle, as a guidence to those who believed what there conduct was to be. If you take these verses and apply them as a universal law as how to deal with enemies, you will get a rather harsh interpretation.

Not one of the meaning means Suicide. You claim to have read the quraan, i have not only read, but memorised sections of it. I have since my young age, read, understood, and learnt quraan. I challenge you openly, and let everyone here be witness, that you produce a verse that glorifies Suicide, and i do not want anything vague.
The whole concept of whom to wage war on is completely misunderstood. Some people so blindly wish to think of it in that light because it in one way or the other fits their purpose. I have seen this mostly coming from christians who say there tired of hearing that everything is misinterpreted or so. But then again, it is not very difficult to go and buy a quraan, be it Yusif Alis translation, or the best one, the mekan publishers version, and to read what it is that muslims believe. It is not important how a non muslim wishes to interpret the quraan, it is important how we the muslims do, because in the end it is us who abide by it, not you. I also find at times that people will deny anything a muslim says soely because he cannot come to terms with a rational modest islam. I personaly have little worries either way because the more people speek of islam, the more people go out and pursue education of islam, it is ironic how all the violent interpretations appear in western book, but when a muslim tries to educate himself from islamic sources he see's none of that! I can remember how after 9/11 the community i lived in was deeply divided. With the relgious members condemning it, and the younger people more weary of revenge glorifying it. I found it painful to accept either, the latter to me seemed evil, the first seemed to be hopeless. I stuck to the first, as i put full trust in god.
Jihan- Your islamaphobic, you can choose to think like that, you can choose to ignore everything we call ourselves, you can call us hypocrites, but why not go out and look for material muslims use to educate themselves with. Then you will find what the muslim really is. There is then again the difference between a muslim, and a islamist. The muslim fully submits to islamic law, it controls his actions, not his heart. The islamist is more passionate about the religion he follows, yet cannot be bothered to submit himself. I am not accusing fellow muslims of either, but i think that both seem engaged in the conflict, and the latter gives us our image.
As for the rights of women in islam, i cannot see another example in the past or present that elevates Woman more. Islam brought women out of the dark ages into society. It gave them the right to purchase land, to inherit, to keep their own name. It gave them right to refuse pre arranged marriages in the past arabian society. Islam asks of women to cover their hair, and bodies that they may not be the subject of mans lust, and man is more physically capable to enforce that lust than women are. Today it is muslim women in the forefront of defending islamic laws regarding them, many in the west are ready to ignore that to look at lets say, the taliban. Now to the subject of crusades. The first crusade of 1095 turned from local disputes to the "noble" act of "reclaiming" the holy land from the "infedel" The story of the first crusade centers around the fact that 400 or so years earlier the people of jerusalem made a plea to the Chaliphate of islam, at the time it was Omar, that he may come to their rescue. He mustered a large force and did just that. The key that gave muslims their enormous empire was the aggression of the roman and persian empires, it was just random wars with whomsoever disliked us ( As robert would like you to think) The poplulation of Palestine, then christian, welcomed Omar all over the city. The conditions of islamic help were agreed on before that, if we are so evil to have had them pay jizya, then why agree? We could have let them be slaughtered, but we didnt. In 1095 the Crusades were launched in which it was the only sucessfull crusade in the sence it acheived their goal of taking jerusalem. But does anyone know why all the fuss about crusades? Because of the barbarism behind it, how many historians have complained of anything of the like on Islamic Jihads part? When the captured jerusalem, they went to the temple mount were 10000 men women and children made their last standm in 2 days all were slaughterd and from every source that witnessed that you get the same description "Ancle deep in muslim blood" "the cities passage ways were filled with muslim blood" The moved into the jewish qurter of the city (we let the jews live under us, give me just 1 example, just one, where under the crusade the jews were spared, that is an open challenge again) and burnt all the jews who hid in their synagogue, then danced around it in joy. It was recorded that up to 40000 men women and children were killed, apparently the vast majority of the population. The rest imprisoned, can you find the likes in islamic history? Yet another open challenge. This is just one example, of just one event, of just one crusade (There were 5 mayjor ones, 100s of other smaller skirmishes and such) History is witness to who shed more blood, who was just, or otherwise. Thomas you spoke of it as retaliation, i suggest you read a book on the first crusade. If your interisted in that, or more on the clash between the Crusade and jihad (during the 2nd crusade) i suggest the book "Warriors of God" By james Reston, Jr. Lastly id like to invite people to read more on islam (preferably from books and materials used to educate muslims) and id like to make a note, Muslims have not shuved islam down any ones throught, Robert clearly shows that it is the islamic ideology that spreads on its own.

Qur’an 8:36 “The unbelievers spend their wealth to hinder (man) from the Way of Allah, and so will they continue to spend; but in the end they will have intense regrets and sighs. It will become an anguish for them, then they will be subdued. The unbelievers shall be driven into hell in order that Allah may distinguish the bad from the good and separate them. Allah wants to heap the wicked one over the other and cast them into Hell. They are the losers.”

Allah is aware of the corrupters, the mischief-makers. Say: ‘People of the Book, come to common terms as an agreement between us and you: That we all shall worship none but Allah.’”
Qur’an 3:84 “Say (Muhammad): ‘We believe in Allah and that which is revealed to us and that which was revealed unto Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes [of Israel], and in (the Books) given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets, from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and unto Him we have surrendered, bowing our will (in Islam).’”

Rank hatred has already appeared from their mouths. What their hearts conceal is far worse. When they are alone, they bite off the very tips of their fingers at you in their rage. Say unto them: ‘Perish in your rage.’”
