EU ambassadors today gave their unanimous backing to a new post of "Mr Terrorism" to coordinate the bloc's security strategy following the Madrid bomb attacks, diplomats said.

Ambassadors from the member states, meeting to prepare for emergency talks among EU interior ministers tomorrow, agreed to appoint a "high-ranking official" to the new post, one diplomat said.

"This Mr Terrorism will be placed under the responsibility of the high representative for foreign affairs (Javier Solana)," he said.
