Palestinian worshippers at mosques in Gaza yesterday handed over cash and jewelry to armed and masked members of the terrorist group Hamas, which is raising money as the U.S. tries to cut off its supply of funds.Reuters said the first-of-its-kind campaign is a sign Hamas's militant wing, Izz el-Deen al-Qassam, is feeling the effects of pressure to freeze its bank accounts and shut down the Muslim charities that fuel its terrorist activities.
Suicide bombings by Hamas members have killed hundreds of Israelis.
The fund-raising, by the group's political wing, amounted to about $120,000 in the first hours of the campaign, Reuters said.
"Now you can help buy ammunition for the fighters," a Hamas statement distributed at the mosques said.
Hamas, with a stated goal of destroying Israel, has vowed to avenge the Jewish state's assassination March 22 of its spiritual leader, Sheik Ahmad Yassin
Along with giving wads of cash, some worshipers at Gaza Strip mosques yesterday took off necklaces, rings and earrings and placed them in the charity boxes, Reuters reported.
"Donating our money cannot be compared to the sacrifices by the men [in Hamas's armed wing]," said one woman, according to Reuters. "They die so that we live."
Senior Hamas leader Saeed Seyam said the success so far of the fund-raising campaign shows the enormous support Hamas enjoys among Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
"It was also a message to the Zionist enemy and to the Americans that they would never succeed in besieging resistance and block its resources," he said, according to Reuters.

This sort of thinking is what keeps the conflict going, foolish woman. How many times have peace agreements between Israel and the Palestinians dissolved because of genocidal militants unwilling to give up the fight against the Jews?
Tell me, Hamas-lady, if your bombers stopped attacking the Israelis, what do you really think they would do? Liquidate you en masse? With the critical eye of the entire world, including the surrounding Arab world, on them? The Jews have shown a degree of flexibility, in reality. There are Palestinians in the Knesset, after all. I wonder how many Jews are in Muslim legislative bodies?
Hatred only subsides when it is met with non-hatred. What exactly have you gained from your intifada? It strikes me that the Jews might trust you a little better if you weren't wiring yourselves and your children up with explosives.
Wonder how many of them really gave 'freely.' I am sure that a great number of the Gazans are dreading the day that Israel leaves Gaza totally. (G-d forbid!)
I wonder if the reason they were armed is because they don't trust their own people even in a mosque? Armed brigands, thieves and robbers. The only thing that has changed since Mohammed's time is that now they ride cars instead of camels and brandish kalashnikov's instead of scimitars.
Once there were but around 50,000 so-called Palestinians in the Gaza area. The word "Palestine" was given to the area after the Romans once conquered it. When the Jewish state was finally born, the Jewish people gave the Palestinian Arabs jobs and the Palestinians began to prosper. They are now 20 fold since 1948. And then came the Arab demogogues in the likes of Arafat, and Yassin who built a career out of fomenting hate (really jealousy) against the Jewish state of Israel. Hamas (revealed in 1986) and its charter of 36 articles is filled with the wanton destruction of Israel and the killing of all Zionists and Christians. It is born from the radical fundamental teachings of Wahhabism whose foundings are over 200 years old and came from Saudia Arabia . It is now believed that even Mecca , the Muslims most holy city has been hijacked by Wahhabists. The Muslim brotherhood is where Hamas Ideologies began to form from. In the fundalmentalist Islamic world there is no room on the planet earth except Islam. The Ideology being taught is to destroy all of Israeli Jews along with all of the Infidels . The path has been made clear a thousand times, and a thousand ways by the call for Jihad. Arafat had his greatest opportunity for peace in 1998 and he turned it down, the offer was actually way to generous. He once again exposed his true colors. And to think he was given a Nobel Peace Prize. Sometimes you wonder if anyone is at home.
