W A S H I N G T O N, April 18-- U.S. intelligence officials have uncovered evidence of a potential terrorist attack, ABCNEWS has learned.Like many such tips, it is vague, but the government is disturbed enough that it held a rare conference call with local police to warn them.
The intelligence, received a week ago but secret until now, is from known Muslim extremists who suggested an attack -- possibly in the U.S. -- was imminent, and that operatives were already "in place," sources tell ABCNEWS.
"I think it's very clear from what we're seeing right now is that the bad guys, the al Qaeda, is getting very creative, that they are active and that they are going to continue to try and hit us," said Jerry Hauer, a former emergency management official and now an ABCNEWS consultant.
On the Lookout
The primary area of concern is so-called soft targets. Police were told to be on the lookout for surveillance of landmarks, and for suspicious items left in malls, subway stations or other large gatherings.
On Friday, April 9, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security held a rare secure conference call with police in dozens of major cities.
By Saturday, April 10, a classified bulletin was sent out warning that groups affiliated with al Qaeda might be planning attacks in the U.S. on the scale seen in Madrid last month.
"I think what they're doing here is acting what they feel is responsibly," said Jack Cloonan, a former FBI agent and now and ABCNEWS consultant. They want to "get the information out, [saying] 'We don't want to be criticized for holding onto stuff, even if it's non-specific.' You have to get it out."
Chasing Down Leads
Intelligence agencies from around the world are chasing down leads to verify the threat.
Sources tell ABCNEWS the information is not specific enough to raise the national threat level from yellow to orange. In addition, officials have not seen a huge surge in intelligence information.
However, officials were concerned enough by who was giving the information that they passed it to local police.
The only way for us to stop an attack like the one in Spain is to stay vigilent in watching for suspicious activity. We should all be aware of our surroundings and inform the police on wierd happenings and objects.
On to another note. Ever since I have started commenting on this page I have been receiving fake emails that say stuff like: i need help securing $5600000000000000000(one google!!) of money because my so and so husband died and all of my so and so relatives are dead. and i picked you to help because your so trustworthy.
Well I got another one today and with it came an attachment that had listed all of the peoples email addresses that comment on this page. I was wondering if everyone has been getting emails like this.

Barb, this is odd, I recvd an e-mail like this from some so-called widow from Ghana that needed my help securing her money as she traveled to a safer place, and an offer of some of this money as a reward for providing security for her......After I finished laughing, I deleted it.

Yes, I've been getting them too. 3 so far. The first one seemed to assume I was a Muslim, wanted me to disburse a large amount of money for a widow and I could keep 10%.
I'm actually not that happy posting my e-mail address but I don't know how not to - I put in a made-up one once, but it wasn't accepted!
Just to let you know.... I removed my real email. If you all need to contact me... let me know and I will give it to you. Might be nice to have a network of email friends in our jihad against Jihad.

I have received three e-mails, one supposedly from Ghana, one from a supposed Christian convert in Kabul and one from an an appearant jihadist in Baghdad. They all want my help and I too received these after making posts. Is this from your run of the mill scam artist or is there a more sinister plot?

Thanks for the heads up on the e-mail situation. My server puts all e-mail in my spam folder that I haven't requested. I never open it. I just mass delete all e-mails in that folder.

my emails that i get like that i forward to the government and i also post them on lgf so charles's lizardoid minions can answer them for me ive also gotten a few anonymous hate emails too
Same situation here,some very wierd e-mails,mostly from people with arabic names.
I never open any of them,but it still bothers me.
I believe some muslim sleepers are watching this site and the persons posting here,just as we watch them .

usually, one can mark the mystery email and label it as "spam." then, the network/server or whatever it is called knows that the origin is junk.
these scams are related in their approach to former oil scams perpetrated on the web that rolled some hollywood bleeding hearts who wanted to help the poor in third-world african countries while making a quick mil or so.
poisonous emails come from poisonous minds. as this war is not only physical but mental as well, we must continue our fight to educate the populous as to the sinister nature of the enemy.
i have gotten several emails like that. in a mad temper i have responded not so kindly and telling i am forwarding to the r.c.m.p, and when i say not so kindly, i really mean very rude and scarstic. after reading your emails perhaps i should'nt be answering so rudly, now i am alittle worried.emails i have recieved are from ghana , nigeria, u.a.e, and other parts of the middle east. should i be worried?

Wow I had no idea so many people posted on this site.
thank you bartb,i was really concerned after reading those posted messages,i did'nt think "jihad watch" or that i visit the website often/or on their email list. i love this site, i really find it very informitive, i find it makes one sit up and take notice...thanks again bartb
