BEIRUT, Lebanon - Arab media reacted cautiously Wednesday to the videotaped beheading of an American civilian by Islamic militants in Iraq, with some newspapers conspicuously playing it down or even ignoring it.The biggest pan-Arab satellite television channels broadcast an edited version of the gruesome video, not showing the actual killing of Nick Berg, 26, of West Chester, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb. The businessman was abducted in April.
In one of the most explicit displays, Kuwait's Al-Siyassah daily ran a photo of a masked militant holding up Berg's severed head.
The video of the execution was released on the Internet too late for some Middle East newspaper columnists to react to it. The killing, attributed to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group, appalled many Arabs. ...
Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiya, the big two satellite networks, aired carefully edited versions of the video. In Al-Arabiya's edit, a militant is seen drawing a knife and jerking Berg's body to one side. The rest is not shown.
"The news story itself is strong enough," said Jihad Ballout, spokesman for Qatar-based Al-Jazeera. "To show the actual beheading is out of the realm of decency."
Lebanon's private Al Hayat-LBC station led its bulletins Wednesday with the video. Its news presenter said: "We apologize to our viewers for not showing the entire tape because of the ugliness of the scene."
Kuwait state television broadcast the news of the execution late Tuesday but not the video.
Iraqi newspapers reported nothing about the killing, although it may have broken to late for them.
Egypt's leading daily, Al-Ahram, ignored the beheading Wednesday. Two other major pro-government newspapers ran news agency reports on their inside pages, without photos.
An Al-Ahram editor, Ahmed Reda, said the news came too late Tuesday night for the paper to confirm the video's authenticity with the U.S. government.
Newspapers in Syria, where the government controls the press tightly, did not report it at all.
A professor of journalism at the American University in Cairo, Hussein Amin, said the handling of the story by Egypt's pro-government papers was political and appropriate.
"I think that the government does not want to show this on the front page as a main item because it shows a very poor — poor is not the proper word; disgusting maybe is the better word — example of revenge," Amin said. "There is also the threat that it could be happening to other Americans. If they put it on the front page, (it could be seen as) they are favoring this kind of action."
Jordanian newspapers, state television and radio reported Berg's killing, but without commentary.
Most Lebanese newspapers, such as the left-wing As-Safir, published the report and a photograph of Berg sitting in front of the militants. As-Safir ran the headline: "Al-Zarqawi slaughters an American to avenge Iraqi prisoners."
In many Arab newspapers, the beheading received less display than the news of America's imposing sanctions on Syria and the killing of six Israeli soldiers in Gaza City.

It is not suprising that many arab news services have not given this story as much space or time as they have to other issues.
First, the story was late breaking yesterday, one reason that many may have failed to display the story in any details. One could also argue that the media in Syria or Iran given the recent imposition of sanctions aren't like to be very sympathetic to the death of a US citizen. This added to a general malaise of anti-US sentiment in the Arab world in general, makes their responses unsuprising.
The fact that many news services have not shown the video of Bergs execution is not suprising either. Even in the west some news services have refused to show any of the video whatsoever, stating that the story itself is emotive enough. Having seen the video myself, I can't say I disagree with them. With the middle east being such a hotbed of Jihadi activity, would it really be wise publushing this video as it might incite more jihadi's to follow its example?

The reason I think this video is not being shown by some western news organizations is because of the rage it could incite against Muslims and Arabs in some Americans. The anger is palpable in news commentators who have seen the video when they discuss it.The reaction has been similar among other Americans. I hope you will get back to the site in time to read the responses to your post. Your wanting all this to stop is a good attitude, but I can't agree with the way you saw the Berg killing vs. the prison abuse scandal.
Some Iraqis (who were NOT civilians) were mistreated in prison, none of them killed. In response, an American CIVILIAN, guilty of no crime, was murdered. How is that the USA's fault? How is it anyone's fault but the murderers? How can this not make you see that Islam has no regard for the lives of Americans, Christians, Jews, Westerners, even Dutch, who are not Muslims?

I for one, reject islam and everything it stands for and anyone who wants to force it upon me. I now wake up in the middle of the night and say my prayers for our soldiers, for our country, for my fellow Americans to stop acting like a bunch of lemmings and do something about this unbelievably dangerous threat to out lives and our liberty. Please pray,(this worked during the battle of Lepanto,) but also, please tell what you know. And let's go in and finish the job we started. Let's get tough and let's get mean. Shut up about the prisoner pictures. This is war and humiliating someone is not the same as sawing their head off while you video yourself. These people are demonically influenced and all the tea parties and encounter sessions in the world will not steer them from their purpose. What are some basic overall responses to the growing war with fundamentalist apocalyptic islamic terrorism?
1. Know your enemy. Our enemy is not terrorism, it is islamic terrorism. That is a vital distinction.
2. One more 9-11 attack will require the full mobilization of the American population to once and for all meet and defeat this threat to civilization. How to mobilize? The President should convene Congress in special session and Congress should declare War upon Islamic Terrorism. No more ambiguity.
3. This decisive move will clear the decks for further actions, such as:
a. no more immigration by muslims
b. all mosques to be monitored 24/7. No problem, right? Nothing to hide in a house of worship?
c. All muslims who are living here as visitors to be screened and put on regular surveillance. A temporary GPS monitoring chip inserted under the skin will be required as a condition of living here. Any seditious speech or actions will be cause for immediate incarceration or deportation. US constitutional rights and freedoms do NOT belong to them as a matter of course. They are granted to visitors as a courtesy and may be rescinded at any time.
d. All US citizens of muslim faith will be asked to state their primary allegiance in a public setting. Any conflict between islamic faith and US allegiance needs to be settled decisively.
e. All islamic countries who harbor any terrorists are fair game. Selective use of overpowering US military force will drive home the point.
f. All islamic terrorists will be hunted down and killed. There are no constitutional or civil rights for them.
g. Support all sincere islamic reformers. Islam must be reformed from within.
h. Always remembeer the goal, the reason for the declaration of war: total defeat and destruction of islamic terrorism and all its supporters.
Only a full declaration of war will get us in the necessary state of mind to follow through.

I cant believe that the americans are blaming Berg's death on Iraqis. Their heads are so far buried deep in their asses is that they don't relaize that Berg got killed due to the mess created by America. It is America who has gone into another country and pillaged and raped Iraq's natural resources and killed thousands of innocent women and children. What was Berg doing there in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, that entire region can starve. Here we are, paying over 2$ a gallon for gas, and have to have our tax dollars wasted on a package of several million illiterate ingrates. I think its interesting to see how much dehumanization goes on on both sides of this line. I have known ikhwan members and sympathizers, i have known hamas supporters and i have lived in the US and the one thing both sides have in common is that you both think the other is pure evil and animalistic. I guess it makes it easier to do what you do to each other.
