GROZNY, Chechnya (CNN) -- Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov and at least three others died in an explosion Sunday during celebrations at a stadium in the Chechen capital, officials said.Russia's presidential press service confirmed Kadyrov's death, and a spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry said that another 44 people were wounded in the blast at Grozny's Dynamo stadium.
The stadium was crowded with people celebrating Victory Day, which marks the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Among the wounded was the top commander of Russian forces in Chechnya, Gen. Valery Baranov.
The blast happened beneath the VIP stand where political and military leaders were reviewing a military parade commemorating Victory Day.
A spokesman for the Chechen Interior Ministry said that the bomb may have been buried in concrete as many as three months ago while the stadium was undergoing a renovation. ...
The blast comes a few weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his annual state of the nation address, proclaimed the "military phase of the conflict may be considered closed" in Chechnya.
Chechen separatists have been fighting for independence from Russia since the mid-90s and are being credited in the Russian media for having carried out the attack.
Victory Day is a major national celebration in Russia.
The Grozny ceremonies were mirrored by festivities throughout the country, including a march in Moscow's Red Square.
Chechen rebels have in the past targeted official events and public gatherings for attacks.

This is global Jihad. The liberal side is always so motivated to wring its guilt-ridden hands and ask if we have a "war on Islam?" Isn't that the wrong question? Shouldn't the question be "is Islam at war with us?" It has been noted Islam has bloody borders. Wherever its civilization borders another, there is conflict. It is the same conflict or Jihad in The Philippines, bloody Chechnya, Nigeria, Kashmir, Spain and Portland. In Palestine, where the Jihadis are very media savvy and the Russians themselves set up the show, the local Jihad is packaged as the Intifadah and is flying off the shelves at media outlets everywhere.
Of course the irony here is as black as the deed itself. Putin just declared the "military phase of the conflict [in Chechnya] may be considered closed", and attack comes on "Victory Day" over the Nazis. From where I'm sitting, I now wonder if we were too quick to declare the "military phase" of World War II closed.
This activity is no doubt the result of U.S. support for Israel...

The Russian destruction of Grozny and a lot of its inhabitants may also be a cause for the anger of the Chechnyans. The Soviet union also made some actions against Chechnya that were bad even by communist standards. (Deportations, etc)

I watched coverage of the bombing throughout the morning. I was stunned that not one outlet--not even Fox News--mentioned the links of the Chechen jihadists to organized terror. "Separatists" was the term most commonly used. We're in the middle of a war on terror, a Muslim groups with ties to terrorist organizations in the Middle East assassinates a president, and no one has the guts to make the connection on the air?! Unbelievable. We won't make any headway in this war until people are willing to realize we're actually in one.

I want to tell you that what happened to the chechnyan president and to the russians is due to the fact that the chechnyan people want independence from russia, while the russians are fighting them and calling them terrorists. I think they deserve a country like all the other people who faught for independence do, such as georgia and the other preUSSR states.
I dont know, but it seems to me that you people as soon as you see any muslim group like to attack it.

It seems the Islamist always have a ready excuse for their violence- human rights, freedom, poverty etc. The Per capita income of Palestinian is many times that of citizens in India, even when they are one dole for years. Time we made West a Muslim free zone by borrowing the tactic from the medical sciences of isolating, containing and confining the Islamist virus to Arabic lands.
Actually, killing of Kadyrov, whose previous position was "The chief muftiy of Chechnya (the highest shea muslim cleric in Chechnya) is hardly a good example of "muslim violence againgst non-muslim).
The religion maybe a factor, as Kadyrov was very strongly against sunni and vakhabby preaching in traditionally shea chechens. During Maskhadov times he lobbied the law of capital punishment for vakhabbi preaching (usually supported by Saudis and Al-Kaeda).
After renegading to the Russians in 1999 he soon become *very* rougue strongman, keeping his power by killing and torturing his opponents (probably even worse than his pro-independence predessors). He made a lot of enemies among vendetta-inclined chechens and of course pro-independence chechens.
Still he was "our son of bitch" and have good chanses of stopping civil war in Chechnya by eliminating his opponents. Now it seems that the war in Chechnya will claim more lives.

I think the problem with chechnya is entirely irrelated to religion. it is one country trying to win independence from another.
I dont have any excuse for muslim killing, and all i say that it is irrelated to Islam. Islam teaches peace, and that what I say.
If you define a terrorist as a person who is a devout Muslim, call me one. I say terrorism is the murder of innocent civilians, whatever these innocent civilians are. American soldiers who kill innocent civilians are terrorists, and palestinians who kill Israelis in the green zone are terrorists.

There is NO correlation between the hazing of prisoners in US captivity and the cold blooded killing of Nick Berg yesterday.
