Dhimitude refers to the status of non-Muslims under Islam. Muslim women aren't dhimmis.
On the other hand, I often get questions about female circumcision, so this seems as good a place as any to set the record straight Allow me to quote from an excellent book:
"The barbarity of female circumcision is practiced within the House of Islam as well as by some Third World non-Muslims." (Islam Unveiled, p.87).
Most Muslim societies do not practice female circumcision, but it is practiced in Egypt, Ethiopia, and other parts of Africa. While many say that there is nothing in Islam which requires female circumcision, one of Sunni Islam’s “Four Great Imams,” Ahmad ibn Hanbal (from whom the Hanbali school of Islamic jurisprudence takes its name) quotes Muhammed as saying “Circumcision is a law for men and a preservation of honour for women.”
Sheikh Muhammad Sayyed Tantawi of Egypt’s Al-Azhar Universitycalled circumcision “a laudable practice that did honor to women.”

A maternity hospital in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, has been forced to close after a doctor who removed a woman's womb in a life-saving operation received death threats from her family.The doctor insists the surgery was essential, but her family says she is "as good as dead" because she can no longer bear children.
Members of the family, who are reportedly claiming compensation of 50 camels, hired gunmen to threaten staff at the city's SOS hospital.
Patients were evacuated and medical workers went on strike on Monday, complaining of intimidation by the 20 or so hired gunmen, who have been prowling the hospital grounds and harassing staff.
The hospital is the only free medical facility in Mogadishu.
The woman's uterus was removed by Bashir Sheikh, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at the hospital. He said the operation was vital because the woman was carrying a dead foetus.
"I was waiting to be thanked, but instead I am receiving death threats," he told the BBC.
The cause of the foetus's death was not known, but the most likely cause of complications was that that the mother had been circumcised. During female circumcision in Somalia, the vagina is sewn together to leave a tiny aperture, causing internal damage and prolonging childbirth for up to 10 days.
Babies frequently suffocate during labour.
Dr Sheikh has complained in the past that female circumcision "is a very bad practice, and against our religion".
He said: "We have had women spending from three days to seven days in labour. Ten days is also normal. At that time the child can suffer asphyxia."
Elders, religious leaders and women's groups have been calling on the family to withdraw the militiamen, but they say they will back down only if they get the 50 camels - the traditional Somali compensation for taking a woman's life.
Muslim women are the true intelligent, Muslims. Muslim men are the grunts.
And if the woman would have died...let me guess...gods will...perhaps it was gods will that she had the operation. The article didnt say how many children she already had...but really how many more children does africa need...I watch the feed the children shows and wonder why it is that these women keep having children, common sense, if I cant feed myself why have a child that I cannot feed. I am guessing that either they are ignorant about birth control or it is against their beliefs...if the birth rate could be controlled perhaps watching children starve to death would be a thing of the past.
How awful that these women have to go through days of childbirth...and the babies that are born alive probably have suffered some brain damage from lack of oxygen. Why hasnt the UN stepped in and condemed this..after all it is woman and child abuse...oh yes koffi is still too horrified at the prisoner pictures to think of anything else.
Good comments USAgirl. They keep having kids because the men are sex maniacs. I read in the collection by Adler, "Jewish Travellers in the Middle Ages", one document that said that the men have sex so much they have 23 wives because they're all pregnant, and you can't have sex with a preg. woman.
Also the UN has complained (along with other notable groups) but the countries that are concerned (Africa) call it "anti-Islam", "a smear campaign" and the like so the complaints aren't taken seriously and nothing is done. The slaughter in Sudan (=blacks in Arabic) appears in the yearly reports of the UN but the gov't says that they are smearing Islam's good name. :-/

Female circumcision pre-dates Islam and so cannot be blamed on Islam directly. However, Islamic cultures are generally very backward in their attitudes to women and so are likely to retain barbaric customs.
In my opinion, all aid to Africa, the Middle East and other misogynist backwaters should be contingent on birth control. Nearly all problems stem from overbreeding. Pay them to have vasectomies and hysterectomies after the first two children.

Although not practiced in all Muslim countries, female circumcision IS a part of Shariah law.
Call me dumb, how does a baby asphyxiate whilst being born ? They don't need to breath until the baby is actually , er, out.
During very difficult labor or prolonged labor, the umbilical cord is crushed excessively and the baby suffers a lack of oxygen and if not monitored, dies from lack of oxygen. They wouldn't understand it anyway.

Overview
We do not judge the actions of Muslims but rather the teachings of Islam. We judge Islam because Islam instructs Muslims to kill non-Muslims.
* Mecca is the town in Arabia where Muhammad began his campaign (610-623 AD) to gain followers to his Christian heresy, Ebionism. At that time, because he had no power, he took no action against people who chose not to follow him.
* Medina is the city in Arabia where Muhammad moved after his mother's tribe offered him military support. In Medina (623-633 AD), he and his mother's tribe waged wars to force people to follow them or be killed. In the Koran, one can clearly see the difference in Muhammad's tolerant teachings in Mecca and his harsh teachings in Medina. Muslims, instructed by the Koran, continue to wage wars wherever they have political power to force people into Islam.
Following are the contradictions between Muhammad's tolerant teachings in Mecca (610-623 AD) and his harsh teachings in Medina (623-633 AD).
In MECCA, Muhammad said that Muslims and others will get into paradise.
"The believers (Muslims), Jews, Christians, Sabians and whoever believes in Allah and in the Judgement Day and does good works will receive their reward from their Lord." (Koran 2:62; 5:69)
In MEDINA, Muhammad said that only Muslims will get into paradise.
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or the Judgement Day, or forbid what has been forbidden by Allah and his messenger (Muhammad), or do not believe in the religion of truth (Islam) among the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) until they pay extortion with willing submission and feel themselves subdued." (K 9:29)

In MECCA, Muhammad taught freedom of religion.
"Religion is not forced." (K 2:256)
"I (Muhammad) can have my religion and you (Jews and Christians) can have your religion." (K 109:6)
In MEDINA, Muhammad forced people into Islam.
"If anyone chooses a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted." (K 3:85)
"Fight them (non-Muslims) until there is no apostasy and the only religion accepted is the religion of Allah (Islam)." (K 2:193)

In MECCA, Muhammad taught Muslims to leave people alone if they do not accept Islam.
"If they become Muslims they are guided rightly. If they did not accept Islam, you (Muhammad) are only to share the message." (K 3:19)

"If they do not accept Islam, seize them and kill them wherever you find them." (K 4:89)

"You (Muslims) are not responsible to guide them to the right way (Islam) but Allah guides whom he pleases." (K 2:272)
"If it had been your Lord's will, all people on earth would have believed [in Islam]. Are you (Muhammad) forcing people to become believers (Muslims)! No one can believe except by the will of Allah." (K 10:99-100)
"[Muhammad], your duty is to share the message. It is our part (Allah) to call them to account." (K 13:40)
"If it had been Allah's will, they would not have become infidels. We (Allah) did not send you (Muhammad) to monitor their actions or judge their affairs." (K 6:107)
In MEDINA, Muhammad asked Muslims to kill people if they do not convert to Islam.
"O prophet (Muhammad), incite the believers (Muslims) to fight." (K 8:65)
"Fight them until there will be no apostasy and the religion becomes Allah's religion (Islam)." (K 8:39)
"Kill the infidels (non-Muslims) wherever you find them, seize them and lie in wait to ambush them. If they repent (convert to Islam) and give alms let them go." (K 9:5)
"Fight the infidels (non-Muslims) and the hypocrites (who claim they are Muslims) and be harsh to them. Hell is their fate" (K 9:73)

In MECCA, Muhammad put no rules regarding the destination of prayer, then he chose Mecca.
"The East and West belong to Allah. Allah's face is wherever you turn." (K 2:115)
In MEDINA, at first Muhammad asked Muslims to face Jerusalem when they pray. After he failed to drag Jews, Muhammad got mad at Jews and switched his destination to Mecca again.
"When you pray, face the sacred Mosque (Caaba in Mecca). Turn your faces toward it wherever you are." (K 2:150)

When early Muslims raised concerns regarding killing non-Muslims, Muhammad encouraged them to fight and carry out Jihad (terrorism) for the sake of Allah. He claimed that Muslims who die for Allah would be rewarded in paradise with big breasted white virgins. (K 78:33)
The Massacre of Qurayza, Jewish Tribe in Arabia
Muhammad attacked the Jewish tribe of Qurayza and ordered the men to be killed, the women and children to be taken as slaves, and their possessions to be divided among Muslims. In one day, Muslims, instructed by Muhammad, beheaded eight hundred Jewish men raping their wives and daughters. Muhammad took Rayhana, one of these women, as a concubine. Al-Mawardi, an Iraqi Muslim scholar died 1058 AD, wrote regarding infidel prisoners of Jihad campaigns:
"Regarding the captives, the prince [leader of Islamic Jihad group) has the choice of taking the most beneficial action of four options:
1.To behead them;
2. To enslave them;
3. To ransom them in exchange for goods or prisoners;
4. To show favor to them and pardon them.
'When you [Muslims] encounter infidels, behead them." (K 47:4)"

For centuries, from Morocco to India, Jihad (terrorism) campaigns waged by Muslims against infidel Jews, Christians, Zoroastrians, Buddhists and Hindus, were punctuated by massacres, including mass throat slitting and beheading. In Egypt, Copts (Christians of Egypt) are facing daily severe persecution. Muslims tell Christians in Egypt, "Being Christians (infidels), you do not have the right to live". They ask Copts to chose one of three options: to convert to Islam or pay extortion or be killed.
Beheading and slaying non-Muslims by Muslims have occurred worldwide; Jews and Christians in Indonesia, Egypt, Sudan, Philippines, Nigeria; Hindu priests, unveiled Hindu women in Kashmir, Daniel Pearl [Wall Street Journal Reporter] beheaded in Pakistan in 2003 and Nicholas Berg [26 year-old Jewish American] kidnaped in 2004 while in Iraq seeking business for his Pennsylvania Communication Company. Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, Jihad terrorist leader, was shown on a video tape decapitating Berg with a large knife.
We should not be surprised that these horrible practices of Jihad terrorism are accompanied by slaying and beheading non-Muslims as the Koran instructs Muslims (K 47:4; 8:12,13). In fact, such horrible acts are approved by both the Koran, the book of Islam, and Muslim scholars. This is the true face of Islam which Muhammad taught in Medina (623-633 AD). In fact this is why Muhammad died (633 AD) after being poisoned by Zainab Bint El-Hareth, a Jewish slave that Muhammad had taken after he attacked Quraiza, Jewish village in Arabia, and beheaded all the men (Eight Hundred men), including her father, brother and husband. After a little bit of time, the baby may start to breath on its own. If it can't get air, ie because the vagina is too small to get out, then they choke on nothingness. In labour, the Umb. cord doesn't work after awhile because the baby's supposed to be out.

The fifty camels should be payed by the person/s that circumcised her, since it's likely the circumcism is the reason her baby died in her.
It is also practicied in the indies, it's quite common.
