Al-Qaeda leaders talked about destroying American and Israeli airlines flying to Australia a year before the September 11 attacks in the United States, a court heard yesterday.The strikes were part of a plot outlined in early 2000 in the Pakistan city of Karachi by al-Qaeda's second in command, Mukhtar, in talks with alleged al-Qaeda conspirator Jack Roche.
Roche, 50, a British-born Islamic convert, has denied plotting with senior al-Qaeda officials to bomb the Israeli embassy in Canberra, with intent do endanger lives.
On day six of his trial in the Perth District Court, the jury was played part of a nine-hour videotape of an interview with Roche conducted by two Australian Federal Police agents in November 2002.
Roche says in the interview that he and Mukhtar also talked about the assassination of Americans and Israelis in Australia and how Melbourne Jewish leader Joe Gutnick would be a possible target.
"Mukhtar was thinking about any airlines that regularly came to Australia from either the US or Israel," Roche says in the recording. "But he mainly was interested in the American airlines that flew into Australia and people who could be targeted."
Okay that plan in 2000 happened in 2001 when and where didn't know that and how we souposed to do stop all flights forever I am so sick of all this hind sight that makes no differince. are we going to live in the stone age or are we going to put the people who want you to live under shria law six feet under I will take a vote on six feet under and no waking up!!!

This putrid excuse for a human being is from my neck of the woods. Reading about the trial everyday, I sometimes shake my head and wonder if this guy is for real. Is he a delusional egomaniac making these things up? Or is this a scary but unfortunately realistic & true view into the mind of an Islamazoid?
So matter of factly does he outline his long-term plans to commit mass murder. So nonchalant is he as he blithely talks about destroying property and creating countless victims. Ho hum, this is the way it's gotta be, folks. My imaginery friend tells me so.
He's good PR for his "faith" though. Hopefully more and more people will wake up to the threat and realise what we're up against. Bali was a bit of a wake-up call, but as time plods along and our memories and outrage fades, we need another reminder. Jack Cockroche is a useful idiot for this.
My fear is that with his constant references to Jewish people, is that too many non-Jewish Australians will think they're not a target too. "Oh, you know, the Muslims hate the Jews because of what they're doing in Israel, serves them right, not our problem, as long as they leave the rest of us alone, she'll be right, mate." Of course, it's everyone that gets victimised, regardless of your god, or whether you even believe in one.
I loathe this Jack Cockroche and his ilk. I loathe him for his psychopathic self-righteous evil plans to wreak havoc on our world. I loathe him for making me afraid to fly to the US, or to fly anywhere. I loathe him for fearing for my children's future and taking away the carefreeness that I enjoyed at their age. I loathe him for making me wary of my kids' wishes to travel Europe and the world like I did when I was not much older than them. I loathe what he believes in that makes him think he can do all this.
It's time Islam was brought out into the open, instead of being hidden behind the smokescreen of "Oh, it's a Religion of Peace, don't you know? These few fanatics are perverting it, they're not true Muslims." That's how they get away with it. That's how they make us ineffectual, spinning our wheels. We need to confront Islam. Drag it out onto the carpet, make them justify its manual of war and hate speech. Monitor what's said in mosques, convict radical mullahs. Things could kick off positively with the opening of an OBJECTIVE inquiry into the serial hate-mongering of the self-appointed "Imam of Australia", Sheikh Taj el-Din el-Hilaly.
It should be linked to the kid-glove treatment afforded to him by SBS, in particular, as well as to the Labor politicians who faun over him at every chance they can get, including the ones who secured his residence-visa, despite his long, documented record of incitement to racist violence and general vilification.
Did you see the white-wash of him that SBS endeavoured on both bulletins of its "news" on 14 May? SBS hired Dr Ahmed Shboul, Professor of Arab & Islamic Studies at Sydney University, to re-translate the speeches Hilaly recently delivered on his tour of Lebanon (before an enthusiastic audience of the Hezbollah).
Predictably, he disputed the translations made by a linguist from the Australian Embassy in Beirut and verified by the Department of Foreign Affairs, casting these as "misleading".
However, when his version of Hilaly's talk was put up against the Embassy's, it was a definite case of DIFFERENT words conveying the IDENTICAL, murderous sentiments!
Numerous people here whom I've asked - who did see the broadcasts - spotted that immediately: no great head-scratching required!
No, HG, I didn't see the SBS whitewash, and I'm sure they used buckets of whitewash, as they frantically tried to make us believe the "all cultures are beautiful and equal" crap. Maybe Latham would see clearly but not with Carmen of Amnesia in the background, welcoming the boatloads which would no doubt start up the week after if Labor won. How lovely for Hilaly that he has such powerful friends in the SBS to come to his rescue when he was caught with his pants down. And then he's got his best mate there, Trad, doing his utmost as well to put the good imam in the best light possible always. Why is the press so shy about talking about it, and about Islam in general? Afraid that more people might become outraged and demand proper action? The last thing I read about it was pretty damning of Islam. It basically stated the facts, and with Islam, the truth is pretty ugly. And very damning. Hard to whitewash it out too.
We keep hearing about the Abu Graib thing, daily. Every day. But Nick Berg's faded off into oblivion. And any other Islamic horrors are given scant attention before being shoved aside for another jab at Bush, the war in Iraq, etc. I'm even quite surprised that they're publishing the trial of Jack Roche so freely. So matter of factly too. Must be causing the PC multiculti crowd a lot of stress. Now how do they put a positive spin on this Roche story? How can they somehow twist it into an anti-Israel, or anti-Bush thing. Must be some way to blame the Jews in this. Maybe a Jewish person was nasty to Roche one time in the past and he's suffered emotional trauma ever since? Well if that doesn't work, they can always try the "Islam is a Religion of Peace and Roche is a minority radical who's twisted and distorted that lovely religion."
HG, I hope your prediction about Labor winning doesn't come true. Not just for the multicultural mess they'll create, but for the economic basketcase they'll turn us into. And yes, it would disgust me unbelievably to be inflicted with another whitewash piece on Trad and his midlife crisis as he pines for another wife since his old one is too tired out from having 9 of his kids in quick succession.
