WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush plans this week to impose economic sanctions on Syria for supporting terrorism and failing to stop guerrillas from entering Iraq, people involved in the deliberations said on Monday. Congressional sources said Bush was expected to curb future investments by American energy firms in Syria and prohibit Syrian aircraft from flying into the United States.Bush was also expected either to block transactions involving the Syrian government or to ban exports to Syria of U.S. products other than food and medicine, the sources said.
A White House announcement on the sanctions is planned as early as Tuesday.

These are very inconsequential sanctions -- Syrian aircraft being banned and so on. Surely the destruction of Syrian airplanes and missiles would be a better way of insuring minimal compliance with American requirements. Rain check, perhaps? It would be most effectively timed to coincide with the announcement of an American withdrawal from Iraq -- as part of a package of anti-Jihad (and the Jihad includes "secular" Ba'athists who, however fiercely they suppress Islam-based political rivals at home, eagerly support Hezbollah, Hamas, and other groups abroad).
Lebanon should be made safe for Christians again by forcing Syria out. Except forIsrael, the state which has done the most to protect Arabic-speaking Christians), nothing has been done of moment since 1958, when Eisenhower sent the marines. It is time to rediscover the Maronites, to undo the hideous damage of the Taif Agreement to which the State Department's egregious David Satterfield was an approving witness (by which the Lebanese Christians were forced to declare Lebanon an "Arab state"), and to make sure that the nasty and primitive Syrian army is kept out of Lebanon permanently. On the other hand, the "Palestinian" Arabs in the south, who have caused such trouble, and harm to the Lebanese Christians, should be expelled to Syria. It will improve matters all way round.

Sanctions on Syria are nominal. Having lost the largesse that it was once receiving from Saddam, Syria's economy's now adjusted and is largely founded upon the export of WMDs (Scuds with conventional and non-conventional warheads have recently been sold to the genocidal régime in Sudan), income from mainly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, to sponsor terrorists in Iraq and "Palestine", graft from the fleecing of Damascus' satellite, Lebanon, and every kind of material assistance from Iran.
Several years ago, the Turks forced Syria into compliance with their will (vis-à-vis the Kurdish separatists of the PPK) by mobilizing massively on Syria's northern border and threatening to turn off the headwaters of the Euphrates. Empirically, fascist Syria needs to be addressed in the language it unambiguously understands - cutting off a scant $50 - $85 million in annual trade won't cut the mustard.
Talking of mustard, via far more resolute action on the part of the US and its Allies, arms-inspectors could gain the access they require to find out which of the missing Iraqi WMDs, stored by fellow-Baathist Bagdad in Syria (back in the days of the cosiness between Saddam and Assad Junior) had been on-shipped into the terrorists' playground of the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon (plus what portion and types of Saddam's arsenal remain where today, and which have already been dispersed into the hands of terrorists and rogue states).
