While I don't agree with the other opinions listed here, the news about Nick Berg last night kept me up all night. This heinous act has shook me to the core. June 30'th isn't soon enough... we should leave now. We have done enough damange already and acts like this show us that we are unwelcome.

Now I want to hear from so-called moderate Muslims, the moral equivalence crowd and other garden slugs who sometimes leave their slime trails on these pages.

People have no choice as to what culture or world that they are born into. A baby born into a muslim family grows up and absorbs the culture of its environment. Some good, some bad. My point is that we must not demonize all muslims because of the terrorism of a few.
Having said that, we can and must push the islamic world to reform its medieval mindset. We must put a stop to the Wahabi-style of islam that is disseminated all over the world by generous Saudi contributions. And where do the Saudis get their money? From oild.
So let's push for an Apoolo-Project to get the USA out of its oild dependency. We need to move into a new-fuels economy and thereby extricate ourselves from that part of the world. When their cash flow, as well as their oil reserve decreases, the Saudis will not be able to fund their Wahabi missionaries any more.
We also need to be absolutely clear about our relationship and strategic involvement with the Middle East. In plain English, we all need to understand why we are there, what is the goal, what is the purpose, and what is at risk.
This is part of the President's job. He has the bully pulpit to speak directly to the people.
We are dealing with fanatical apocalyptic terrorists who have no respect for law or morality. They must be hunted down and killed to the last one. Period. At the same time, we must be careful that we do not lose our moral compass. Very difficult when faced with the beheading of Mr Berg.
The USA has conducted several major military engagements since WW2, but without any formal declaratiion of war. Should there be another terrorist attack upon the US then we, as a nation, should formally declare war upon islamic terrorism. That will clear the decks for action.

Were it only so simple as to just get out of there... Unfortunately, radical Islamists understand one thing: Power. We turn tail and run, and they'll view it as vindication. They won!! My main complaint about this whole sordid affair is that our country did not complete the job in Afganistan. Instead, failing in our primary goal of catching Osama, Bush and his cohorts deflected America's attention away from that failed effort only to focus on someone who was neither an imminent threat to the US nor a proven stockpiler of WMD's. What happened to Nick Berg is morally repugnant and there exists no moral equivalent to justify such a heinous act. I only hope that the current mainstream of thought doesn't deter us from now finishing the job in both Afganistan and Iraq.

Personally, I don't think democracy is possible in the arab world. I don't believe they are capable of fighting for it, as our forefathers did. Also, their religion is just too extreme to allow democracy to flourish.
I also don't think what happened in that prison is such a big deal. It's a bigger deal for the democrats, who will do anything to get back into the white house. I recall what the Japanese did to our captured soldiers during WW11...we have such short memories.

I think Barb is right. The Arab world is stuck in the dark ages, and so just like the West did, they will have to go through their own Renaissance and Enlightenment before they will be anywhere near ready to have a civilized culture.

Ironically, the Islamic world needs to do again what they did while the West was in its dark ages: rediscover Aristotle. They need to find their own equivalent of Thomas Aquinas, somebody who will try to combine Aristotle with Islam, and thereby strike the spark that will kill fundamentalist religion as the driving force in their culture.

Only when fundamentalism is dead and gone will the Islamic world be able to start on the path towards civilization.

A physical fence obviously wouldn't keep people in or out. But an economic fence may. Move all Westerners out of the region and eliminate the use of fossil fuels as fast as possible (ten years?) Hydrogen based fuel cells are the most promising near term replacement (and environmentally friendly) for fossil fuels.

Remove our dependency on their oil and we can remove ourselves from the area completely and let the region evolve on it's own and figure out how to make an economy exporting dates and opium. No need for occupations or wars or nukes.

The quote about it not being possible to civilize the Islamic world was correct. So was your point that they were the most advanced civilization when the West was in its Dark Ages, and that it was from them that the West re-acquired certain crucial and important ideas.

However, to say that "It is not possible to civilize the Islamic world" is to say that they cannot be _forced_ to become civilized. Becoming civilized is a _choice_ that people have to make. People have to choose to seek out, learn, and live by the ideas that make a culture civilized. The Islamic world is nowhere _near_ making that choice, and once they do, it will take decades if not centuries for them to transform themselves.

Fundamentalist Islam is almost literally like a rabid animal. It cannot be reasoned with or lived with, it can only be quarantined or destroyed. Unless we remove their ability to affect people beyond their lands, quarantine is not an option.

So they say this latest grotesque slaying was in response to the treatment the Iraqi prisoners got. Well explain to me the reason behind the mutilation of fallen US soldiers in Iraq prior to the pics being made public. Explain to me why the four US security workers were incinerated in their vehicle and then had their bodies mutilated and dragged through the streets. Say what you like muslims, but your religion is responsible for all of this whether you participate in it or not. Your lack of condemnation of such acts, or should I say you total silence only aids these satanic apostles. At least the US government had the guts to accept responsibility and take action.
I look at all these fucked up Islamic terror groups and they all claim they are freedom fighters fighting opression and doing allahs work. Well let me tell them that they do not have a monopoly on this cause. They may want to realise that at some point the rest of the world will cease to listen to theit pathetic whimpers. As a Muslim, I'm completely outraged at this heinous act. Islam forbids the killing of innocent civilians and this act was just appalling. The most prestigious Islamic institute in the world, Al-Azhar, condemned this.

I do wonder sometimes why we bother to try to preserve the dignity of Muslim culture by insisting that there is a "moderate" Islam exists separately from "radical" Islam. From everything I have seen, even so-called moderate Islam represents a backwards way if thinking which is mostly incompatible with commonly accepted standards of modern "world" culture and human rights. It is a xenophobic, patriarchal, ignorant, inbred, intolerant culture that treats women like livestock who exist only to serve their husband or father. People of other religions are relegated to official second-class status. Why do we bother to preserve Muslim culture? We essentially wiped out the ancient tribal American Indian way of life, and it was actually more civilized than most Muslim societies. I see no reason why the long-term strategy shouldn't be for Western culture to slowly wipe out religious Muslim culture;--by force where necessary, but hopefully mostly by cultural influence, just as happened to the American Indian culture. Western culture is better than Muslim culture, and we should not be afraid to say so, because it is the objective truth.

Muslim women in the US are protected under US laws, if they divorce and go to court, they are equal in the eyes of the court, if they inherit they are equal to their brothers, if their husband beats them the husband will be prosecuted under US law, not told he was defending his honor and it was "gods will", it is not the law of the land that they ask permission to leave the house unescorted and they are free to come and go as they please also unescorted, their husband may NOT marry other women while still married to them....not too difficult to be a muslim woman in the US...perhaps in order to be a true muslim one must live in a country that is governed by islamic law, otherwise it seems that muslim women are not getting the "special" treatment that they should, instead they are governed by the infidel laws of the west.

What drove me to do it was watching, live on TV, people jumping out of the windows of the World Trade Center and seeing, live on TV, the second jet smash into the other tower and then watching both towers collapse. At that point, I was so shaken by what I had seen that I determined then and there that I had to find out what could possibly have driven people to commit such acts. The first thing I read was the Qu'ran. I was so shocked by what I read there that I could not believe it.

The bottom line is I have devoted a large chunk of my life to trying to understand why nutty people like you think the way you do. Now, I have found out why you think the way you do and it is the nutty religion of Islam. And I am devoting what remains of my life to ensuring that other people find out what the truth about Islam really is.

I can't easily fight the billions of dollars a year that the Saudis and others pour into Islamic schools ALL OVER THE WORLD to support their WORLD WIDE attempt at indoctrinating the whole world into Islam but I can do my little bit. And Berg's murder had nothing whatsoever to do with any alleged abuse of Iraqis. It was nothing more than an expression of the true face of the Islamic death cult.

I was born in usa... all my family is christian and jewish.. I converted 5 years ago.. so That makes me an American Muslim.. since I was not born into Islam but that of other faiths.. and I do wear my hijab and my niqab here in usa so my rules of living and my duties for Allah dont change!! Is that easily understood. I'am more muslimah than some muslimahs born into Islam. For Example alot of N. African arabic muslim countries the woman dont cover. I know this since I lived there!!!!

First of all Hala, when some of my religious authorities made some serious errors (Catholic bishops and priets) I was angry and the problem was addressed by many priests and bishops being thrown out of the Church. I can tell you that although the problem is not over we are attacking it by training people what to look for and making sure there are no perverts in the seminaries. I can tell you becasue I am involved in the process of weeding out these miscreants. Are you weeding out the jihadists from your religion. Are you making sure no hate is being spewed in Koranic School? Are you finding out who the Bin Laden sympathizers are "outting" them? Are you writing letters to Islamic publications stating any call for violence against non-Muslims is wrong? You mentioned strip clubs Hala. I went to college here in the US in the 1980's. Several Arab students were friends of mine. They were Palestinian, Iraqi and Saudi. They were always drinking and driving to strip clubs. They told me about their wild secret parties back home. Don't lecture us about porn and strip clubs. You frequent those places far more than we do.

Frankie the USA isn't perfect we make some mistakes but we have generally have a belief system that is higher than ourselves. We actually have churches that are full instead of yours that are empty museums. Are you proud of your legalized drug and prostitution industry? YES I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE STATING ABOUT SOME OF THE LAWS AND HOW THEY SEEM HARSH ETC. But it is study of it and how the muslims undertand it. For example most arabic countries dont have the woman cover their face. Just the ones wear shiite is most common. And as far as cutting the animal by the throat that way (sheep) it is a cleaning of the animal to get all blood out to make it clean. Halal!! Thats why in my state, being one of the largest Muslim population we have halal meat stores and halal food for muslims. Like New York has alot of Kosher shops. Nobody speaks for me.. What I believe is how Islam should be taken. I'am believe in a peaceful and rightous Religion. While im at it, Hugh, the prophet did not comand the killing of the 700 men of banu quraiza. Banu Quraiza asked of the prophet to let their former ally judge their fate. He ordered the killing of the 700 jews, and the prophet Muhammed(pbuh) was know for sticking to his deals and treaties.
For example, when a man, who was being tortured by the meccans escaped from mekkah to madina, the prophet asked of him to be patient and to return to makkah, as the prophets treaty included that anyone escaping makka for madinah was to be returned. Please get your facts right.

I am yet to meet a Muslim person or read the words of one in these pages that has any respect for other people's beliefs. One of the people in here claiming to be a "moderate" quotes pages from his Koran that says unbelievers are the worst of creatures who deserve to go to hell. Where is the respect there? I am an unbeliever (of any religion) but I can honestly say that I have never harmed another person in all my life. I have a loving family, great friends and no enemies that I know of. I work hard to feed and clothe my family. I help out in my community and do plenty of unpaid charity work, yet somehow I am the "worst of creatures". There is something screwy in this if you ask me.

We actually have churches that are full instead of yours that are empty museums. Are you proud of your legalized drug and prostitution industry? I am not proud of the fact that we have so many violent deaths in this country. I wish it weren't so but we can't pretend that we don't have a criminal culture that thrives off those poor liberals who believe all criminals and terrorists are just misunderstood and need a voice and outlet. Frankie we are a settler nation of immigrants the gun is a part of life in many areas. I once lived in a rural area where every person had a gun over the age of 14 and yet there wasn't a violent crime committed there in years.

You mentioned President Bush. First of all I am conservative Democrat from the rural midwest, not a liberal coastal Democrat. As for the President, I think Europeans have some bizarre view that he's some sort of dunce that stumbled in the White House. True, he doesn't have the breadth and speaking ability of Tony Blair but I think his strong suit is he listens intently to cabinet officials and experts explain their points of view and then decides what course of action to take. I can think of some great intellectuals that would make some awful leaders. If you read the Woodward book you might see Bush in a different light.

As I mentioned before, these message boards do cause the emotions to run high and there are some crazy people of all sides that post here. However, you must understand that we Americans are a passionate people that have strong views. We often don't see the gray in arguments. We are more black and white in our thinking, than Europeans are. We display our flag and other national symbols as well as our religious symbols more than you may be use to.

Some of us continue to focus on nothing but the negative things that have occurred in Iraq, and of course that is understandable when you watch CNN who is incapable of focusing on the positive things that are occuring in Iraq.

Here are a few of the positive things that are occurring in Iraq:

* School attendance is up 80% from levels before the war.
* Over 1,500 schools have been renovated and rid of the weapons stored there so education can occur.
* The port of Uhm Qasar was renovated so grain can be off-loaded from ships faster.
* The country had its first 2 billion barrel export of oil in August.
* Over 4.5 million people have clean drinking water for the first time ever in Iraq.
* The country now receives 2 times the electrical power it did before the war.
* 100% of the hospitals are open and fully staffed, compared to 35% before the war.
* Elections are taking place in every major city, and city councils are in place.
* Sewer and water lines are installed in every major city.
* Over 60,000 police are patrolling the streets.
* Over 100,000 Iraqi civil defense police are securing the country.
* Over 80,000 Iraqi soldiers are patrolling the streets side by side with US soldiers.
* Over 400,000 people have telephones for the first time ever.
* Students are taught field sanitation and hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of germs.
* An interim constitution has been signed.
* Girls are allowed to attend school.
* Textbooks that don't mention Saddam are in the schools for the first time in 30 years.

I am not failing to discern good from evil. There are plenty of bad apples in this world. What many people are blinded from seeing (Not necessarily you, however the many people at this website) is that NOT ALL MUSLIMS ARE EVIL. Have you read Robert Spencer's books? You both show a surprising lack of knowledge about Islam and its tenets. In case you missed it: it is INHERENT in Islam and all its "books" that it is the central duty of all Muslims to turn the planet into a worldwide Islamic Caliphate - you will either convert or die. Even though the so-called "moderate" Muslims soft-pedal this, it is an incontrovertible part of their "religion" and many groups in North America (and everywhere else) are working in non-violent ways to achieve this even now. What will you do when faced with the choice? For it is the STATED Muslim goal as defined by their own texts that face the choice you eventually must - they consider it inevitable. Read Reza's post above - at least he's open about what the "faith" professes.

I suggest that you both educate yourselves a bit more about the reality of the Islamic threat before you make pronouncements about tolerance. You hit the nail on the head. For most people Islam is just another religion. and the muslims who are mad at us must be mad because we did something bad to them. This is the most common form of 'a priori' reasoning. It's a basic assumption about the world, spec. the islamic world, that only changes when seen in the light of new facts.
Most muslims are honest, decent, good human beings. So were most Germans under the Nazi regime, or Russians under Stalin. Our quarrel is not with the ordinary decent people, but with the toxic apocalyptic aspects of their culture. It's hard for liberals to accept the depth of positive evil in this world, and to fully accept that we are not the bad guys. We want to be heard for our minds not our looks. This is our duty to Allah and we will continue to serve our Allah and what he wished upon us as Muslims to do.

And we use seperate areas to pray for respect to Allah... we need not come to place of worship to look at eachother. We go for one reason only. To pray!
Look at your churches... woman and men go to pray.. but they also see eachother, can talk about things other than prayers or the bible after the preacher has completed his prayers all in their house of God! Why did they go to the Church.. to pray right:? Then they should leave it just for prayers and to worship God.
Muslims when we go to the Mosque, we go to Worship Allah, we go in full respect!! For in our religion it is important to be good, and respctful Muslims!!! And we as Muslims pray our prayers through out the day to keep the words of Allah always in our minds. We will have more halal in doing so.

And as for those who say all Arabs and Muslims are hateful people who worship wrong... You are wrong.. because Islam is not just for Arabi!!

America could have had their interests legitimately without resorting to under hand and devious tactics to maintain unfair advantage.

America is reaping what it has sowed and will continue to reap bad sentiments until it changes its attitude to foreign policy.

I read a posting that suggested the Americans were so kind in allowing the oil for food programme, i am not sure that this was a right you had to give, it was not your oil in the first place.

Saddam Hussein was propped up by the British and American governments for years whilst commiting atrocities against Kurds and Marsh Arabs.
His officers were trained by the British at Sandhurst and he was used as a regional pit bull terrier at the behest of his masters; until the day that the pit bull got loose and had a mind of its own, only then did the west see him as a
tyrant and murderous dictator, prior to that he was a friend of the west when fighting Iran.

There is then the old chestnut about the ungrateful people, let them rot, let them sort out their own mess in future.
Most messes in the world have been created by the west due to redefining countries borders when it was not there business in the first place, this forced tribes or groups of people who
had previously been at odds to live together, this could not work, did not work and will never work.
It was not the right of the invading power to be there and not their right to decide how and when they would leave, often a power vacuum was deliberately created to ensure that the country imploded once the power had left.

Many countries around the world are victims of debt due to the policies of the west.
The IMF has financed projects in many developing countries that could not possibly work.
The IMF knew they could not work but went ahead anyway, trapping these countries in a debt trap to which there is no escape.
Dictators were given money by the west as favours for business deals, everyone knew that the money was going into his pocket; however the country was held responsible for the debt after he had gone, paying huge interest without having received a single benefit.
Incidentally the dictator often went once the USA was finished with him; a U.S.puppet was then put in his place, ad infinitum.

Not all Americans are Nationalistic trailer trash types so typified by Jerry Springer, there are millions of good well meaning people around the country who sicken at the violence and its never ending spiral out of control.
Carl Sagan NASA physisist and Cosmolgist was highly patriotic to America but was deeply saddened at the behaviour of certain politicians
such as Regan and the history of his country which has had over 250 wars in the last how many years.
It is quite amazing that America has been engaged in so many wars, several wars with Mexico, Canada, Nicaragua, China, Somalia, Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, there has hardly been a corner of the planet untouched by the USA.
I am sure that each time the USA could justify its stance and each time the other side was a barbaric, unjust regime that needed sorting out, or its people helping.

In a land of over 9 million square miles you would think that the Americans could have managed to have lived nicely side by side with the Indians but no siree, lets pay a bounty of a dollar a scalp and whipe out those pesky varmints.

There have been many empires in the world over several millenia, all of them have eventually
come to an end, the British Empire was the last one.
It would probably have been impossible to convice a person at the height of the British or Roman empires; that one day they would crumble and fall.
The sun never set on the British Empire, where ever you were in the empire the sun would always be shining on a part of it; however it fell, just as the current American Empire will one day decline.
It is hard to see now whilst in the midst of it, whilst America is on a roll, but things have a way of coming around and Mother Nature; like the Mississippi, just keeps rolling along.

It may not happen for a century, maybe more, but rest assured the wheel turns.

America has systematically leveraged countries into submission; George Bush senior summoned the Prime Minister of Singapore to the white house and asked him to explain why he had banned tobacco advertizing in his country, the ban had affected sales of American cigarettes and Bush was unhappy about that.
He gave the PM and ultimatum, he had to allow advertizing back onto the screens and billboards, not only that he would have to allow for extra advertizing to make up for lost ground, if not then Bush would ban all electronic products from Singapore.
The Singaporeans had to give in as the trade was worth 6 billion usd.
All this at a time when advertizing of cigarettes was being banned in the U.S.

There are many incidents of bullying like this which have obviously left a bad taste in the mouth of those who have had there dignity removed.

9/11 was a terrible act, no one can condone such behaviour. but look at it from the reverse side.
How frustrated must a person become before he will commit to an act like that?What had happened in order for them to reach that point?

America has spent trillions of dollars over the last few decades making weapons to ensure its safety, now America is the only super power and the world is not safe.
The Americans told us of reds under the bed, the yellow peril and God knows who else, now they are no longer a threat but the world is as unsafe as ever.

Rather than having the John Wayne and Rambo mentality, why not change tactics?
You want safety and security and all the good things in life.
Why not try to under stand why people think differently to you, try to accept another point of view and then try to build something in ageement with those to who you are at odds, instead of your way or no way, instead of "if your not with us your against us mentality"

If a president came in who was a thinker instead of a gun slinger, he would maybe think that it makes far more sense, both from a safety and security prospective as well as a humanitarian prospective to make friends than enemies, it is also a damn sight cheaper on the national purse.
If i help out in times of famine i can maybe get a look in on a contract in that country, not force them to take genetically modified maize so that you have them by the balls next time.

If i spend a fraction of my defence budget assisting poorer nations, then maybe i do not need such a large defence budget at all; because i will have more friends.
Instead of our egos getting in the way, we say, ok things got out of hand, lets start dialogue that will allow sanity to provail.

This goes for the Islamic Nations to, you also have to answer some deep questions about yourselves.

But if we love our kids and their kids and want a future world where they can thrive, is it to hard to hold out a hand, no matter how hard that may seem and say "Lets sit at the same table and talk about our differences"?

Until then win the argument and loose the sale.
No amount of money or weapons technology can prevent a single person from carrying out an act of terrorism within the U.S.A or on an American business enterprise some where in the world.

If the west made friends with only half its enemies it could cut the arms budget to such an extent that it could irradicate malaria, polio,
starvation in the third world and have extra for research into other things that could benfit the human race.
The following year they could spend the savings on dams and water catchment areas to prevent future wars over water, this will happen as areas dry up and rivers become neccessity to life.

I am not religious at all, i am what you would call an agnostic and with good reason to.

As the majority of you on this message board are Americans i had better make this simple as you are not the sharpest tools in the shed.
An Agnostic is someone who has not made up his mind as to whether there is a god or not.

I went to a pentocastal church and saw lots of people standing and praying, singing, it was nice
but the people gave off a holier than thou stench that put me off.
I then went to an evangelist church full of happy clappers who praised the lord and screamed at full belt.
Later i heard some of them bad mouthing what some others were wearing and comparing outfits, what a load of crap.

Years ago i went to a catholic ceremony because my friends child was christened, guys in frocks swinging incense on ropes and talking about lambs 50 times in the service did not a lot for me.

I am currently working in a country which is half christian and half islamic, the muslims take out prayer mats and pray 5 times a day.
I have some Muslims working under me and they are the biggest lying and cheating bastards under the sun.
