Facing a June 30 deadline for transfer of power, a temporary constitution that reads, in Article 7, that Islam is the "Official Religion of the State," and the most recent humiliation for the community -- the failure to receive even one position on the Executive Council and only one ministry post, the Ministry of Emigration -- the Christians of Iraq are voting with their feet."On a recent night the church had to spend more time on filling out baptismal forms needed for leaving the country than they did on the [worship] service," says Amir, a deacon at a local church who does not want his full name published. "We have been flooded with parishioners desperate to leave the country, and as they cannot get an exit permit without a baptismal certificate from the church we have been swamped with requests. ... In recent days nearly 400 families as far as we can tell have filled out baptismal forms to leave the country. Our community is being decimated."
Most of the Christians in Iraq are Assyrians -- people who claim to be the original inhabitants of Iraq. The Assyrians were the people of Nineveh -- present-day Mosul -- the city to which God sent the biblical Jonah.
Because they are Christians and seen as allies of the West, the Assyrians have long been subject to persecution. The Assyrian Church, known officially as the Assyrian Church of the East, is the oldest continually existing church in the world. Assyrians are the only people in the world who still speak Aramaic, the language spoken by Christ.
It's not just because they are seen as allies of the West that they are persecuted. Dhimmitude as a legal system and then as a cultural hangover has contributed a great deal to a culture of discrimination and harassment.

Not strictly true, the Kurds also still speak Aramaic (as a native language, naturally most speak Arabic and/or Turkish too).
So was the Aramaic spoken in The Passion of the Christ accurate? I was under the impression that Aramaic was a dead language.
In the longer version of this article, a Christian interviewed mentions that the U.S. funded television station in Iraq runs Muslims religious programs four or five times a day and that no other religions are allowed to broadcast programs. So what is democratic about that? What is so infuriating is that this blatant form of discrimination is paid for by U.S. tax payers. In the past two years, the U.S. has paid for one Islamic government to be formed in Afghanistan and we are well on the way to allowing another Islamic government to form in Iraq. I will include Kosovo and the future state of Palestine on the list of governments that the U.S. has funded that have every intention of becoming totally Islamic states. This sort of "nation building" is a total waste of American blood, sweat and money. I support our brave troops but I certainly don't support our policies anymore.

I sent the following letter off to the infamous NYTimes on June 9th in response to two Op-eds by Bill Safire and Bartle Bull on the possibility of Kurds seceding from the "new" Iraq, but with specific reference to the emigration of the Assyrian Chaldeans and their horrific history in the last century.
Aramaic is very much part of the Assyrian Chaldean Christian liturgy, as I have been informed, it was with the Maronites in Lebanon, proving the resilence of this lingua franca of the ancient world developed under the conquering Persians. Which would explain why ancient Jews adopted it in their liturgy.

Reading between the lines of William Safire's column, "The Resolution's Weakness" and Bartle Bull's Op-ed "Will the Kurds Go Home?", June 9, 2004, it looks like in the rush to the exit from Iraq, the Bush administration will sacrifice not only the Kurds in the north, but also Assyrian Chaldeans. The north has had the protection of the coalition no-fly zone, revenues from the Oil for food program and a decade long development. The northern provinces has something that "Arabistan"-the Sunni and Shia southern provinces don't have: a real economy and representative government. To say nothing of an able fighting force in the Kurdish peshmerga.
In addition to the Kurds there are 2.5 Million Assyrian Chaldean Christians in the north.
They have few illusions about either their Kurdish neighbors or Arabistan. They are making tracks to leave Iraq and join their diaspora here in the U.S and elsewhere in the west. After two thirds of them were slaughtered during both the late Ottoman empire and in the 1930's under the King Faisel's reign, they are not waiting around for a third and final "ethnic cleansing."
So, July 1st could well witness an artificial Iraqi interim government falling into pieces and Kurds opting for a free Kurdistan and Assyrians for a real exit from the looming mess.
I've been telling my conservative friends since Bush started talking about Saddam, that the last thing we want in a Muslim hellhole is democracy.
Tyrrants like Saddam, The House of Saud, and dictators like Suharto and Musharaf may be unpalatable to the more sensitive among us, but just imagine what the Saudis would do if given free and open elections... based on an article from yesterday, can you say "President Bin Laden"?

well, KJ, you've finally said something I agree with. I have very little hope for the democracy we're trying to install in Iraq. Based on all the information I've been getting on Islam, the whole idea of individuality, democracy, and basic freedoms are alien to the Islamic mind, and many of their so-called "holy" men have quite publicly stated such.
If and when the new governement falls under the onslaught of Islamic radicalism, my hope is that it will open a few more eyes in the western world as to what's in store if this tide is not checked.
Having the Islamic secs fighting each other isn't such a bad senario. It's going to happen regardless. the only thing that will stop it is if they embrace democracy. They will be in a "damned if they do, and damned if they don't" situation. And, don't try blaming Bush for everything, Alot of this has to do with Irans meddling in everything. They sponsor Hesbollah, Hamas, and other groups.
The only way Iraq will remain stable is if they embrace democracy. Iraq's new government knows this as well, and they know that the coalition can't leave untill it takes good root.
Lets also not forget the interm constitution of Iraq isn't carved in stone either. A new one has to be drawn up. People will vote for who and what they want.
Alot of stuff has to happen before we see what the final shape of Iraq will be. People here in the west expect to see things happen far too quickly than it possibly can. A bad side effect of our fast paced lifestyle I suppose.

Under the Constitution, Americans are expressly given freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom to pursue whatever endeavors they choose as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.
What would happen to these freedoms if America became a "Nation of Islam"?
Would Muslims allow Americans to choose their religion or would they force them to convert to Islam, according to the teachings of the Koran. "If anyone chooses a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted." (K 3:85)?
If a Christian converts to Islam and later decides to turn back to Christianity, his punishment is death. "Kill whoever changes his religion [from Islam]." (B 9:57)
Muslims would want people to follow the teachings of Islam which do not allow women to drive or anyone to openly worship any religion other than Islam.
Americans would lose their right to openly express their opinions. Khomeini, a former president of Iran, ordered Salman Rushdie, a British writer, to be killed because he expressed an opinion contrary to the teachings of Islam.
Muslims would like to establish the "Nation of Islam" in America. If America became a "Nation of Islam," Christians and any non-Muslims in America would suffer the same persecution as Christians in the Muslim countries of the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Wherever Muslims have political power, they persecute Christians. Christians are required to obtain a presidential permit to build or repair a church. Militant Muslims, politically known as terrorists, kill Christians, take their homes, burn their cars, houses and businesses, bomb their churches, kidnap and rape their daughters, and sell them as slaves. This is what is happening to Christians in Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and all other Muslim countries. Today, Christians and all non-Muslims are discriminated against in all aspects of their lives, including education, employment and promotions. Islamic law requires religious affiliation to be shown on national ID cards, job applications and all official documents. This ensures Christians can be identified and prevented from getting supervisory positions or promotions, as stated in the Koran. "Jews and Christians must not be in supervisory positions over Muslims." (K 5:51)
If someone refuses to convert to Islam, the Koran teaches he would be punished by having one hand and one foot cut off, or crucifixion or stoning him to death (K 3:36). This is how Christians are treated in many Muslim countries.

* Adultery is punished by a public beating (K 24:2)
* Drinking is punished by forty lashes (B 8:770)

Prisons, in Muslim countries, are chambers of torture rather than places for rehabilitation.

It is possible! They have already taken over many countries in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, and it is their plan to take over America, which they call, "The Great Satan."
Islam is a world domination scheme and is the fastest growing religion in America. Today, Muslims in America claim to have reached six million. Their plan is to grow by one million every year. Muslims expect Islam to be the second largest religion in America in the not too-distant future. In just a short time, Islam could become the religion of the majority in the United States. imho i dont believe the west will completely wake up untill there is a new caliphate. you ask why. well a caliphate would unite all the islamic countries into a massive country [think of the ussr]. then there can not be fringe elements, so when there is an attack we will be easily able to identify the source since there would be a pope type figure calling for jihad. disposing of the caliphate in the last century might have done us more harm in the long run than the good in the short run. and no i'm not equivocating mohammedans to christians.

Yet we never come up with a substantially different Bible.
Last of all, If I ever saw a sizeable body of Muslims loudly and publicly expressing a frank recognition that the Assyrians, Armenians, Copts, Maronites, Jews, etc. are part and parcel of the Middle East and that the systematic humiliation and occasional massacres they've been subjected to are wrong, I will breathe an awful lot easier.
