In Iran, Khadijeh Shahla Jahed, the temporary wife of soccer star Nasser Mohammad Khani, is likely to be executed for murdering Khani's wife, Laleh Saharkhizan. This Telegraph story (thanks to jonascot) calls Khadija the "mistress" of Nasser, but way down in the story we discover that that is not quite what she was.

Iranian men can enter into marriage with women for a specified period: a week, a month, or just a weekend or a single night. "Temporary wives" proliferate in holy cities where lonely seminarians congregate.
Many people assume that such legalized victimization of women is a relic of the distant past. In Iran, it lives.

Shahla Jahed had been his temporary wife, a practice approved of in the Islamic republic. Their temporary marital status meant that Khani escaped any charges of adultery.
In Shi'ite Islam, Muslim males can take temporary wives for periods ranging from a few hours to several decades.

So, what's the difference beween liason with a hooker and this practice, anybody in the Islamic world want to clarify?

Presumably this means that women can also have temporary liaisons, at least before they are properly married. Though I should imagine that in this kind of society they will be seen as damaged goods on the proper marriage market.
Of course women who are permanently married would not be allowed this kind of indulgence with 'temporary' husbands.

I'm a first time poster, but I cannot believe this immoral practice of "temporary wives". In the US we call them "hoes" and alcohol and or money is involved-just watch MTV, or attend public schools and you'll know all about it.
I would like to know, what happens to these poor women once their contract is up? Do they stand out on the street corners awaiting another john-I mean-husband? Will any man marry them for good? Or are their lives ruined? What about any children they may bare to these pimps? Are they just deadbeat dads? How can Muslims defend this practice-aside from the usual "becasue the Quran says so" pavlovian response?
My writing is a bit harsh because the Muslim world points the finger-and apparently many explosives-at the west especially, yet engages in a mirror action of nearly every sin it accuses the "western infidels" of!
