Peace, or a hudna? An end, or a pause? From Reuters:
NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - Radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr sent his fighters home on Wednesday in what may mark the end of a 10-week revolt against U.S.-led forces that once engulfed southern Iraq and Shi'ite Islam's holiest shrines. With the formal end of U.S.-led occupation just two weeks away, Sadr issued a statement from his base in Najaf calling on his Mehdi Army militiamen to go home.
"Each of the individuals of the Mehdi Army, the loyalists who made sacrifices...should return to their governorates to do their duty," the statement said.
That call came a day after President Bush said the United States would not oppose a political role for Sadr -- only weeks after branding him an anti-democratic thug.
His Iranian minders have told him to cool his jets...and just rig the election -- like they do.
Hmmm... first we start out and say we are going to arrest or kill this guy. Now its ok for him to run for office? Something doesn't add up here.
"Your grandchildren will revolt against islam."
This is certainly good news on that particular front ,but we can never let our guard down for a moment for the Islamic perversion of Jihadism is still running rabid as they flow from the lure states of the middle east Syria,Pakistan, and of course Iran .
As we have read, there is evidence that Iran is moving up some of its army to the Iraq border in recent days which is something that has to be watched very closely as well.
The Iranians are trying to cork up their border before any freedom slips in...
Most likely, they have concluded that democratic activists are hooking up with the outside.
Their troops involved are a military joke vs USA.
Could we be pulling a rope a dope?
It is the Iraqis who want him for killing a claric?
I think he sees the writting on the wall? and is like saddam and does not want to end up like saddam's sons!!! yes he is a punk who wants others to die for him but runs under womens skirts to hide like the coward that he is!!
Well here in the USA no where to hide sissy boy Short skirts rule!!!
Phill asked should we lower our skirts for safty well the way I see it we should shorten them then the sissy arabs have no where to hide and if you reed this story you will see we have a right to get rid of the burka mask!

You can see the problem: what if Iranian democrats stage a regional uprising adjacent to southern Iraq --- sort of an invers Sadr -- and then beg for intervention.
Could W. stay aloof like H.W. during election sweeps week ?
Yeah, they're worried that Bush might come to the rescue.
The whole situation is ripe for diaster: anxious moments for Kerry, the Mullahs and Islamists everywhere.
the mehdi army is just a bunch of slum city kids with no military expertise and training led by incompetent mullahs. when engaging US forces, the kill ratio is like 80 to 1. they are just cannon fodder and target practise for US forces.
The sunnis, on the other hand, are a much formidable opponent. Concentrate your efforts there.
English lacks a single word to express the notion "Would that it were so." Other languages possess such a word: "Ojala" in Spanish, for example, which often serves as the beginning of an entire phrase: "Ojala que tuviese una mujer como..." or some such. The Italian "magari" does yeoman service by itself, and since, unlike "ojala," seems not to be etymologically beholden to Arabic (but I may be swiftly corrected), it is a more fitting word to appropriate for a comment here on Moqtada al-Sadr's newly-declared sweetness-and-light: Magari.
Bush wants things as quiet as possible until after the election, so a military cure for the Sadr disease is undesirable, or at least postponed.
Sadr wants to survive to fight another day.
Ergo, a deal was made.

I don't know where some of you guys are getting your information. The one government spokesman to comment on the issue has stated that al Sadr is still a wanted man, and is therefor not eligible for any sort of appointed or elected office.
Bob,
I saw it tonight on Fox news with Bill O'Reilly in an interview with Tony Snow, on the latest poll to come out of Iraq.
Looks like the US is behaving more and more like Arabs, say one thing one day, another the next; declare a win even though it is not quite so. Maybe it's from staying too long in the middle east. :-)
When in Rome acts like the Romans, oops... Arabs.
Hope the government, while accepting the truce, will stay vigilant and remember that being hostile to us and a moslem, they have a tactic called 'al taqeeya'.
It does seem that Sadr has lost some key lieutenants. One was popped Tuesday. Sadr is a fat coward, and not any kind of military genius. His ‘troops’ are victimized adolescents thrown as meat against the USA 1st Armored Division. It’s a savage folly...by a savage. Sadr is a certified dullard. He is a wannabee cleric – and never made the grade. Best described as a ‘small shot’: the kind of guy who ruins daddy’s enterprise – which he inherited.
A fat coward? How did Michael Moore get into Fallujah?
Gary:
Good one, Michael Moore could probably convince the people of fallujah that he is on their side quite easily, at least it would be nice if he would go over there and give it a try.
They wouldn't like Mr. Moore.
Remember, they aren't permitted contact with swine.
I'm not happy with this arrangement, either. There's room at the table for everybody but criminals...this is exactly what I've been posting about! If they have a case on this bastard, they must go after him otherwise there is no hope for rule of law in that country (and by eventual extension, ours)Since when do the inmates run the asylum?
Since when do the inmates run the asylum?
Since New York, California, Delaware and Massachusetts keeps electing them to office.

Ha! Exactly! And they're driving the rest of us to "self-medicate".
