Authorities aren't sure yet whether the video of the murder actually depicts Pfc. Matt Maupin, but in any case this just underscores the fact that the turnover of sovereignty in Iraq is not going to change a thing. The jihadists are fighting to establish an Islamic state, and they aren't going to be any more favorably disposed toward what they perceive as a U.S. client state than they have been toward the U.S. military presence there. That unrest will continue, and that the new Iraqi government will face fierce challenges and may not survive, are the only certainties in Iraq today.

The machete cult strikes again. However--I can't help but notice that the ferocity of the Thirty Years' War and the British civil wars of the 17th century did much to spawn an anti-Christian enlightenment; while the brutalities of 20th century totalitarianism of both its Communist and socialism+operatic trimmings Fascist forms made many grudgingly admit that the Chrsitian doctrine of original sin might be true. Perhaps the biggest casualty of the furor Islamicus, in this age of information, will be Islam itself.
I'm so relieved that JW is getting back up to speed, that the comments section is restored, etc. but things are still a little slow. I hope that it didn't take so long that all the "regulars" found other distractions. I really missed the daily exchange and I'm relieved to see a few players straggle back. I myself had to content myself with reading from actual BOOKS during that time period - actually, it was time well spent, since they were all relevant to the subject.
At some point I'm going to post a list of names of posters on this site whose comments have really influenced, affected and inspired me. For now, suffice it to say that the work being done here is invaluable, at least insofar as goes the edification of one humble individual ...

Incredible isn't it, how much of the United States and Europe continue to live in denial: as if World War will not find us all after the Islamists succeed with some attack that over-shadows 9-11. Al Qaeda has even stated in online documents that their goal is no less than 4 MILLION DEAD AMERICANS. How, may I ask, do you think they will go about this -- and who in their right mind would underestimate a group that has succeeded already in nightmarish proportions with the crumbling of the WTC.
I agree with DCWatson. Political Correctness may eventually be written on many of our headstones if we don't start to get judges and liberals to see clearly for a change.

Robert, I believe that it's tribalism that must be defeated...it helps to remember that many more Iraqis than coalition members have been killed by insurgents.If the Iraqis themselves see themselves as "Iraqis versus Insurgents" than this new government has a chance of survival. Remember, the liberal theory of "self determination" only works if it is truly "self". My money is on theory of Realpolitik - that is, a country cannot be handed sovereignty, it must take it to be a country, and slice off the offering hand if it wants to be a nation.
I was hoping that Bernard Lewis' idea of the Iraqi royal family reigning while a coalition parliment governs (not unlike, say, Sweden or Spain)would've caught on, but oh well. It might have lent a unifying identity that would have countered the inherent tribalism, and improved the chances for success.
A lot depends on the upcoming trials - if they are viewed as "victor justice", all is lost. But if, as Shaw said, the soul of a nation is it's language, then the conscience of the Iraqi nation must rise in a choir of languages against the accused. Let us pray that it will be a chorus, and not a babble.

In June 1991, Siraj Wahaj, a Black convert to Islam, and a recipient of the American Muslim Communities highest honors, delivered the daily prayer at the U.S. House of Representatives. Using the Koran, Siraj prayed that the "Almighty" would guide American leaders, "and grant them righteousness and wisdom".
Over a year later, this same Siraj Wahaj addressed an audience of Muslims in New Jersey by saying; If only Muslims were more clever politically, they could take over the United States and replace its Constitutional Government with a caliphate. Quoting this Muslim; "If we were united and strong, we'd elect our own leader and give allegiance to him.... take my word .... if the 6-8 million Muslims unite in America, the country will come to us."
Of note: This Siraj Wahaj is the same Muslim leader who served as a "character witness" for the blind Sheikh Rahmen, who was on trial in 1995, and who was later found guilty of Conspiracy to overthrow the Government of the United States.

You got me there raisin, I must admit anything to do with numbers is pretty daunting material to me and I'm also afraid that,like you,I'm guilty of the age old human malfunction of not thinking properly before I speak/post. I however will admit my faults a human attribute that most muslims seem incapable of, no matter how much death and destruction you cause and no matter how much evidence is stacked against you,you still deny it and lie through your teeth, sometimes coming out with the most unbelievably far fetched explanations , any lengths to avoid admitting that muslims are capable of such inhuman bloodshed.

(And Underneath is labeled as a "RACE HATE CITE"). This problem needs sorting out, I always request these pages be recategorized but to no avail, maybe Joseph owns this library eh folks?
