Al Qaeda's Growing Sanctuary

West Africa, as we have often noted here, is increasingly becoming a safe haven for radical Muslims. From the Washington Post, :

With the end of the brutal conflicts in Liberia and Sierra Leone, West Africa is seldom in the news or on the policy agenda these days. Yet the region is quietly gaining recognition as what it has long been: a haven for al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. Weak and corrupt governments, vast, virtually stateless stretches awash in weapons, and impoverished, largely Muslim populations make the region an ideal sanctuary.

U.S. Gen. Charles Wald, deputy commander of the European Central Command, has been warning Congress and the Pentagon for months that al Qaeda-affiliated groups are active in Mauritania, Mali, Chad and Niger. The trade in diamonds used by terrorist groups, begun under the protection of former Liberian strongman Charles Taylor, continues despite international efforts to curb it. "The terrorist activity in this area is not going to go away," Wald warned recently. "This could affect your kids and your grandchildren in a huge way. If we don't do something about it, we are going to have a real problem on our hands."

Isn't it amazing that Muslims who are 20% of the
World's population manage to contribute to 95% of the most serious international conflicts while being responsible for more than 80% of DEATHS from
terror attacks in the last decade!

Here's something sad. I spoke with a Muslim friend of mine by phone yesterday. He is from Sudan, but lives in the U.S. I asked him what was going on in his homeland (as I like to fish for any information I can get regarding the great religion of peace), he replied that there were "big problems".

I said yes, the problem is that Arab Muslims are killing African Muslims simply because they're black. I've known this guy for 4 years, and we've always gotten along well. However, yesterday, he absolutely refused to admit that this was happening over there.

He said no, "it's all about money over there, they're fighting over money". I said that it was all over the news, and asked him how he could deny that the Arabs were killing his people like that. He said "the news just said that to make it look like that".

I told him that the problems he and his people have are with the Arab Muslims. I began to get upset with him because he's always been a stand up person, but he was wilting on the phone.

I told him that the next time I talked to him I wanted him to explain a few Qur'an verses to me because I was bothered by them. He agreed to do that. I also told him what some of the Muslim or Muslim portrayers say to us on this site.

We then went on to the little Somalian bastard that they indicted in Columbus for plotting to blow up one of the malls there. He said that he knew the Somali's family, that everyone was shocked over the news of this, and that they didn't know what to do. I suggested killing the little terrorist and saving everyone time, money, and headaches.

He didn't appear to appreciate my idea, so we went on to bin Laden. I told him that bin Laden needed to be violently removed from the planet. At that point I think he knew that I wasn't going to let up on him and his religion, so I wished him and his wife good luck with the upcoming birth of their third child, due today, and we parted ways.

Point to this: Even this guy, who I consider a friend, wouldn't come out and say that Muslims were doing wrong, even when the wrong they do is killing his own people.

This is truly a sad situation.

Thanks all.

Western Africa , the 21st century "wild west", bitterly ironic wouldn't you say???

Someone of my acquaintance, a black African, raised as a Muslim, recently returned to his home in Niger after having lived in France for the past five years. He came back to France shaken, for everywhere, he said, Saudi money had transformed the mosques. Women who had never paid any attention to rules about dress were now burkaed; a new spirit had infected the mosques, with their Saudi-supported imams. Whatever easygoing, syncretistic religion, marabouts and all, he had experienced, had been definitely transformed out of all recognition.

Why such attention to Niger, one wonders? Perhaps it is going on everywhere. Or perhaps Niger, as the most important source of uranium available, is especially dear to certain hearts? Forget about Joseph Wilson's lightning expedition. Who -- French, American -- is minding the store, and keeping track, of what is going on in Niger, in West Africa (where even a putatively Christian ruler, like the despot who runs Togo, or Obasanjo in Nigeria, can do the bidding of Muslims who are able to manipulate them, through bribery, threats, or other means).

Too bad the Boy King sent the Army and Marines to Iraq to make sure all those Muslim kids have schools, drinking water, and oil.... so that when we leave the Shi'ite MAJORITY can vote in Sharia.

Otherwise, we could send some troops to these Western Africa nations and squash the fledgling jihadi movement.

Yes, its just too damn bad isn't it? But Bush sure does look tough now, doesn't he?

Time to put an end to Islam. Because if we do not, Islam will destroy the entire world and the entire human race.
We are dealing with Satan incarnate on earth, and in Islam, there is nothing immoral about lying, cheating, deceiving or killing. I know it's going to be hard to do.
The best thing to do is, those who refuse to leave this evil religion, to barricade them in Saudi Arabia where they can never get to the outside world ever again. Making it illegal to be a Muslim will be hard but might be attempted on a smaller scale, such as the national level. But somehting has to be done, and be done now.

Keith! Let's talk about 'Aid and Comfort to the Enemy.'

Michael Moore. Thief, liar and bigot.

Whoopi. If the character she had played in STNG- Guinan- were here, she'd slap Whoopi with a brick.

Kerry- He'd hand our country to France and the UN.

Bush is 1000X better than any of the people who 'represent the spirit of America'listed above.

btw, I notice you've given up responding to us or the links we present for your perusal. Cheap shots at the only people doing anything about this problem is all you seem good for anymore.

Gary, you act as if Keithjoy’s cheap shots are surprising. When your party has no sustainable platform, no personality, and no issues, cheap shots and name-calling are all you have left.

You have to ignore facts, such as Kerry’s 30-year history of trying to dismantle the military, and our current administration's overwhelming military and political successes in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. You have to ignore the fact that treating terrorism as a legal matter is what led to 9/11, while supporting a candidate that has stated he plans to implement that exact same failed view.

Keithjoy, like most Democrats, hates Bush, but they can’t come up with any effective ideas of their own. They’re stuck playing second fiddle on every major plank of their party platform to a man they long ago labeled a dunce. They got no discernible “bump” when they added Edwards to the ticket, and are even or slightly behind in the polls.

After months of media attention and millions of dollars spent, the DNC is realizing that the more people know about Kerry, the lower his approval rating, across multiple polls, over time. And the Republicans haven’t even started to campaign hard yet.

He sees the writing on the wall. His party is going to loose, probably by a Dukakis-sized margin, to a man that they think is below them.

That has to hurt.

Oh, not so much surprised. I just have hopes that if one keeps chipping at the massive walls- just like they did in Berlin!- sooner or later they will fall.

I realize it distracts from the commentary on the articles at hand, but I can't seem to let it go. I have a buddy of 30 years who is, in almost Every sense, a Republican- and he votes straight democrat almost all the time, even while despising the stands most of those he votes for, take. I have to guess throwing info at a 'blind' person is ingrained into me after so long.

I have to say I'm not much pleased with Bush.
He's too much of an adman using phrases like
"Operation Iraqi Freedom" and "Patriot Act" and
his roadmap to nowhere...well it's a good thing it is going nowhere because now is NOT the time for a palestinian state. I think he's wrecking the environment (though I'm not a Green extremist) and is beholden to corporate interests. My choices in order for presidency from the menu we had this year were:
Lieberman,
Gephardt,
and....grr.....Bush.

For national security reasons...had they offered him up....I think I could go for Cheney.

Why don't the U.S. government break the monopoly of DE BEERS have on the diamonds market. The U.S. can flood the market with diamonds.Taking away a form of funding from the jihadist becaue diamonds will become cheap. No profit. It could be easyly done diamonds are a dime a dozen and found all over the world and cheap. The only reason they are expensive is because DE BEERS buy up 60% of it and hold it in warehouses and manipulate the price.Supply and Demand. They even can be made artificiality and indistinguishable from real ones.

Just want to add, I do think Bush is good on Nat'l security and glad for his fundamentally pro-Israel stance. I don't mean to ignore the good where fault can be found.

Afra~ I am in agreement on Lieberman as a choice.

Bush~ Yes, he has made some mistakes. Either that or they are very clever manipulations that haven't born fruit yet. I still think he is waiting to be re-elected- and then the gloves come off.

I did just read that greenhouse gas emmisions have dropped from 14% (under Clinton) to 11.4% now. But I would need to see a graph as to When that drop began...
