U.S. Marines besieged the city west of Baghdad in April after four Americans were ambushed and killed there. Ten Marines and hundreds of Iraqis, many of them civilians, died before the Marines pulled out and handed security over to an Iraqi volunteer force.The three-week siege is inspiring "a literature of resistance and war," said Egyptian novelist Gamal el-Ghitani. "Fallujah is a symbol, in one of the worst eras we have witnessed, that it is not impossible to stand up to America."
He said it also sends a message to Arab dictators about the lesson people may draw about resisting oppression.
"I used to laugh, despite the ghastly daily news, about how a bunch of poor, helpless Iraqis with primitive weapons are forcing the greatest superpower in the world to negotiate. Honestly, the American army was ridiculed," he said.
And if we had flattened the (supposedly holy) mosque these thugs were hiding in and around, the whole thing would have been settled in seconds, and the bastards would have something else to scream about.

I agree with you Gary, except the"religous" aspect. I would call Islam/Muslim a cult without any reality or common sense. You are right - if the full force was turned loose, it would be over in seconds. it is difficult to believe they can come up with such distortion of the facts and believe it themselves.
Interesting how the arab world is desperate to be proud of anything. Whilst Fallujah should have been made an example, it instead was spared by the grace of the U.S. military. Mercy from the infidel is claimed as victory by the muslim!
America is willing to go to war, but not fight to win. The military is asked to complete an objective with one hand tied behind its back. As long as there are those who are not willing to wage total war, there will not be total victory.
Forced surrender through utter capitulation was never the goal of the Iraq action, so why expect their will to be broken?
Every reprieve given to the enemy will be seized upon by the jihadists as a victory for their cause. Break the body, and the hearts and minds will follow (Japan WWII?).

If you go into Egypt and go to the border with Isreal you will find a great monument celebrating their victory of the "7 day war". (It was called the "7 day war" because that was all it took to kick their butts by the Isrealis). But they believe that they had such a great victory that their is a monument anyway.
Their lack of self-esteem is a danger to the whole world. Must the whole world be blown up and misery visted upon tens of millions just because Arab men are so pathetically thin-skinned?

On the one hand, it is disappointing to give the terrorists and their sympathizers any reason to celebrate.
On the other hand, it is extrememly hard to believe this anything but a temporary situation. Temporarily untended rat traps have their uses at times and to make a bad situation better, I would suggest a 6 month celebratory party of the defeat of the US be hosted in Fallujah. Terrorists, come one, come all! There's going to be a party in Fallujah!
All in all, I think Fallujans would have been better off if this situation had been resolved prior to June 28.

My son is one of the Marines running patrols around Fallujah, and I will tell you that they will likely leave the place alone unless the Marines are attacked and provoked. If they are, Fallujah will be leveled--and you can take that to the bank. This alternative has the full backing of Allawi, the PM. Fallujah west to Syria including Ramadi will be devastated--all Sunnis. They are looking for a reason to hammer them. again, this time it will be with the blessing of the Iraqi govt--big difference when it comes to the public impact. Think about it.

Do the muslims really DOUBT that the Americans COULD have very easily flattened that city and any other they chose with the air power and guided bombs that they posess?? The Yom Kippur war was also a 'great victory' for Egypt, even if it did end with the Egyptian third army sorrounded, the Syrians utterly defeated and nothing between the IDF and Cairo and Damascus. We can only hope that some form of Democracy will help change all that and bring them into the 21st century.
