July 8, 2004 — A U.S. Marine missing from Iraq for more than two weeks is safe and being questioned at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, ABC News has learned. ...U.S. military officials have said the Lebanese-born Hassoun disappeared June 20 from Iraq on "unauthorized leave," but changed his status to "captured" after he turned up on Arab television blindfolded with a sword hanging over his head.
On Saturday, a statement posted on an Islamist Web site said Hassoun had been beheaded in Iraq. But a day later, another Web statement declared the Marine had not been killed after he promised not to rejoin the U.S. military. ...
U.S. military officials say they are investigating his disappearance amid suspicions of a possible hoax.

Seems to be a dilemma for the military - fighting against Islamic militants, when you've got Muslim soldiers. Seems that some Muslim's first loyalty is to their fellow Muslim. Maybe even their only loyalty. But there must be lots of Muslims in the coalition forces who don't feel this way, who are loyal to their country, not to Islam. I hope. I also hope these cases of disloyalty are few and far between. Otherwise, Muslims in the military should be asking themselves what they are doing there if they can't bring themselves to fight against Islamic militants, since that's what the fight is all about, and will probably continue to be about for years to come unfortunately.
Yet another twist to this murky story. This morning (09.00 BST) the BBC showed film of the aftermath of a gun-battle in Lebanon. It was between Cpl . Hassoun's family and , presumably, terrorists of some kind who were accusing them of being American collaboraters! Maybe this is the reason he disappeared... But then again, I notice that the US military are not actually commenting on what is going on. They appear to be trying to ascertain the facts. It works for me.

If He did come back to the USA & Marine Corps, he can always claim conscientious objector, and then get a discharge.
He should not be allowed back into any Marine or other US Military unit. In fact - He should not be allowed back into the USA. Period.
