Former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger blocked four separate plans of action against the al-Qaida terrorist network from 1998 to 2000, according to the newly released 9-11 commission report.The report cites a 1998 meeting in which then-director of the Central Intelligence Agency George Tenet presented a plan to capture Osama bin Laden, notes the New York Sun.
"In his meeting with Tenet, Berger focused, however, on the question of what was to be done with Bin Ladin if he were actually captured," the report says, citing a May 1, 1998, CIA memo. "He worried that the hard evidence against Bin Ladin was still skimpy and that there was a danger of snatching him and bringing him to the United States only to see him acquitted."
Berger, who served in the Clinton administration, is facing a Justice Department investigation for allegedly smuggling secret files out of the National Archives prior to the 9-11 commission hearings.
After news of the probe broke Monday, Berger stepped down from his informal position as security adviser to Democratic Sen. John Kerry's presidential campaign.
I'm really at a loss for words here.
When you add this to Gorelick's "wall of separation," and the prior administration's belief that terrorism is primarily a legal matter, you almost have to be amazed that we didn't get hit sooner, and harder than we did 9/11/01.

WASHINGTON - The main investigative committee in the Republican-led House will look into allegations Clinton administration national security adviser Sandy Berger mishandled highly classified terrorism documents, lawmakers said Wednesday.
DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe said he was making the request "in response to the questionable timing of the public release of information," which was the subject of a story by The Associated Press three days before Thursday's scheduled release of the final report by the Sept. 11 commission.

Archives Officials Stunned by Scope of Berger Theft
Officials at the National Archives were stunned to learn how much top secret material Clinton National Security Advisor Sandy Berger had purloined from a super-secure reading room set up for the 9/11 Commission probe - when Berger returned documents last fall that they didn't even know he'd taken.
"Sources tell us that Archives staff noticed documents missing after one of Mr. Berger's visits," reports Wednesday's Wall Street Journal. "After gently raising the issue with him, they were shocked to have him return other documents they hadn't even noticed missing." The next time Mr. Berger went to the Archives, the documents he was given were all marked - and he apparently pilfered those as well.
Over five visits to the Archives on three separate dates, Berger removed up to six copies of an after-action report on the Millennium bomb plot, which was said to be highly critical of the Clinton administration's counterterrorism failures.
At 15 pages per copy, Berger would have taken up to 90 pages of Millennium reports alone - a quantity of material that defies his explanation that he "inadvertently" lifted the papers. Some of the documents were later destroyed, Berger admitted on Monday.
It's not clear whether the Archives kept a full and accurate inventory of the material made available to 9/11 witnesses such as Berger. But the admission by Archives officials that he took documents they didn't even know they had suggests it may be impossible to determine what material has been lost or destroyed.

``I didn't know it was closing,'' said Paul Love, a 79-year-old World War II veteran, who sat outside the Veterans Administration clinic on Causeway Street yesterday.
Secret Service and military officials are taking over the building for security reasons, leaving the Jamaica Plain clinic as the only option for local vets who need medical care next week.

Former colleagues of Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger challenged allegations that the ex-aide stuffed classified documents in his socks to remove them from a secure reading room prior to his 9-11 Commission testimony.
Federal officials have launched a criminal investigation into the former aide, who now advises Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, for pocketing highly classified terrorism documents.
Though Fox News is reporting Berger and his lawyer said last night he knowingly removed handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket, pants and socks, CNN reports law-enforcement sources say some of the actual secret documents he reviewed were stuffed in his socks before leaving the room.
Joe Lockhart, Clinton's former spokesman, says Berger "categorically denies that he ever took documents and stuffed them in his socks," according to CNN.
Well could that be because he stole so many papers that they would not all fit in his socks so he had to put some in his pants?
Remember it took kerry days to get rid of this guy?
