The great pioneering scholar of dhimmitude, Bat Ye'or, many of whose most important essays will appear in my forthcoming collection The Myth of Islamic Tolerance, has a critically important essay on the state of Europe today at FrontPage:
Last Tuesday, the 25 nations of the European Union (EU) voted unanimously to support a United Nations Resolution condemning Israel’s defensive fence (ignoring that this barrier was constructed to keep jihadist murderers from entering the nation via Judea and Samaria). The EU’s craven, morally bankrupt stance was sadly consistent with Eurabian policies evident now for three decades. In fact, the EU has been completing a slow metamorphasis into the "Christian" arm of the Pan-Arab world, different in religious observation (or lack of same) but united in its views of Israel and America....Prompted by fears of Khomeini's Shi’ite theocracy in Iran, international Arab terrorism and the rise of oil prices, the EC adopted the 1980 Venice Declaration. This declaration made clear that the EC, under French leadership, had adopted Pan-Arab conditions regarding Israel without qualification, including: the 1949 armistice as Israel’s legitimate borders; Arab sovereignty over East Jerusalem; an Arab Palestinian state; the recognition of the PLO as the sole representative of the Palestinians, as well as its participation in all negotiations, and the obligation of Israel to negotiate with Arafat, exclusively; and the refusal to recognize a separate peace between Israel and any Arab country, for the resolution of the "Palestinian problem." By adopting all those conditions (which contradicted UN Resolution 242) Europeans could in turn justify their ahistorical designation of Judea and Samaria as occupied Arab land. Ultimately, the entire European effort to delegitimize and vilify Israel hinges upon this inaccurate, disingenuous formulation. In the 1970s and 80s, the Communist bloc and the burgeoning Euro-Arab alliance granted international legitimacy to the denial of Israel’s rights by the PLO. France, and to a lesser extent Germany, directed the entire European Community foreign policy in accord with Arab-Islamic sentiments. A careful reading of the Venice Declaration (1980), the Fez Islamic Conference (1980), the Amman Arab Summit (1980), and the Taif-Mecca Islamic Summit (1981) reveals the similarities between the European and Arab positions in relation to Israel. Europe’s modified wording is just a fig-leaf....
Beyond a fleeting awareness, the overwhelming majority of Europeans and Americans do not understand the new Eurabian entity, which only the first step in a steady progression toward its Arabization and Islamization. Europe has evolved from a Judeo-Christian civilization, with important post-Enlightenment/secular elements, to a "civilization of dhimmitude," i.e., Eurabia: a secular-Muslim transitional society with its traditional Judeo-Christian mores rapidly disappearing....Most recently, this program of Euro-Arab symbiosis has been codified in a detailed report entitled, “Dialogue between Peoples and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean Area.” Released last October, this report (whose contributors included Umberto Eco and Tariq Ramadan) was to establish complete interdependence between Europe and the Arab-Muslim world. Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, established the High-Level Advisory Group which stated the aims, policies, and routine functions of the foundation. The Advisory Group mandated that the foundation have complete financial and administrative independence in managing its budget and in choosing its partners. In support of this remarkable request, the Advisory Group argued that the foundation needed considerable resources to cover its activities that would be extraordinarily expensive, as they will encompass all the countries of the EU. The Advisory Group further justified such conditions by invoking its lofty aim, which “is nothing less than peace itself.” And this “peace” -- accomplished through “brotherly love” and “dialogue” between the North and the South of the Mediterranean -- will be achieved by a total economic, political, and cultural fusion....
One can choose to ignore it, but Eurabia is a tangible entity. Eurabia has a discernible historical development, and its functionaries are now well entrenched in each European parliament, and at the head of the European Commission. Often Javier Solana merely parrots the Arab League's Amr Moussa, or the Palestinian Authority's Yasser Arafat. Hence Solana's parrots the pan-Arab refrain that no reforms can be achieved in any Muslim country before the settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict, reiterating the same fatuous statements made by Amr Moussa. The EU continues to proclaim that all negotiations must be conducted with Arafat alone and that the Middle East conflict is at the center of world politics. Those two assertions were repeated endlessly at the Fez, Amman, and Taif Summits (1980-81). The EU’s unlimited funds finance anti-Israeli and anti-American campaigns, as well as the "dialogue" industry. Regarding Israel in particular, it appears as if the EU has become the obsequious mouthpiece of the Arab League.
This Eurabian ethos operates at all levels of European society. Its countless functionaries, like the Christian janissary slave-soldiers of past Islamic regimes, advance a jihadist world strategy. Eurabia cannot change direction; it can only use deception to mask its emergence, its bias and its inevitable trajectory. Eurabia’s destiny was sealed when it decided, willingly, to become a covert partner with the Arab global jihad against America and Israel. Americans must discuss the tragic development of Eurabia, and its profound implications for the United States, particularly in terms of its resultant foreign policy realities. Americans should consider the despair and confusion of many Europeans, prisoners of a Eurabian totalitarianism that foments a culture of deadly lies about Western civilization. Americans should know that this self-destructive calamity did not just happen, rather it was the result of deliberate policies, executed and monitored by ostensibly responsible people. Finally, Americans should understand that Eurabia’s contemporary anti-Zionism and anti-Americanism are the spiritual heirs of 1930s Nazism and anti-Semitism, triumphally resurgent.

I am an European who is impressed by Bat Ye'or's moral clarity and wisdom. I thank her for her eye-opening work, and look forward to purchasing her forthcoming book.
Today Europe is loosing her Western character. The survival of Europe requires an urgent, though improbable, popular revolt against EUrocracy.
One correction: in mentioning the "Dialogue Between Peoples and Cultures in the Euro-Mediterranean Basin" Bat Ye'or refers to both Umberto Eco and Tariq Ramadan as "contributors." I doubt that Umberto Eco, who is too intelligent to be taken in by Islam, had anything to do with the report. His name, and that of a number of others that are listed -- such as that of Tullia Zevi (the widow of the architect Bruno Zevi and the "head" -- if "head" there be -- of the Jewish Community of Rome and therefore of Italy), are there because they are useful camouflage for the real authors of the report, which no doubt include Tariq Ramadan, grandson of Hassan al-Banna, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, and a mediagenic figure who apparently believes that inhabitants of the Western world, all of them without exception decadent and soulless and wandering in the universe, looking for meaning in all the wrong places, are ripe for Da'wa.

eco sounded like a strange contributor to me as well. i'd like to know for sure what his involvement is. i would hesitate to be surprised, though. another wonderful mind by the name of gabriel garcia marquez is one of castro's big apologists. as far as i know, marquez is also a big supporter of hugo chavez.
I still cannot understand the silence of what is surely the prevailing ethos of the EU, "live and let live, man..." over the encroachment of Islam.
Something must give at some point. It seems that there are enormous forces pulling in opposite directions, Islamization and even deeper levels of good old decadence and free living...What gives? Or perhaps a better question: When?

Umberto Eco is indeed listed as a contributor. The document is execrable as Bat says it is. Read every word, freak out and then start writing letters to all your friends, your politicians and journalists.
Bat Ye'or puts forward a compelling thesis. Her thrust is that the Islamic invasion of Europe is not a coincidence, or engineered by Islamic nations, which is Orianna Fallachi's view. Bat Ye'or's contention is that it is in the main, a EU policy, with France in charge and possibly the main instigator.
If this be the case, then it must fall to Bat Ye'or to show why France has been consistently opposed to Turkey's entrance into the EU. I hope someone enlightens me.
Wodan82, I tend to agree that the issue of Moslem invasion will again come to a head and force will be used by both sides, sooner or later. Those who favor freedom and oppose Islamic tyranny must be united and acting in concert, however. Otherwise, the new lingua franca will be Arabic. That is why every aware person must be taking action NOW to involve everyone around them and to get those people to involve yet more people. While I've drawn fire from a couple of people for advocating this, I believe that the people of the West must be awakened and acting with a like mind before Western governments will act appropriately and do what is necessary to defend their nations. Truthfully, real leadership is sorely lacking in elected office and these days largely seems to consist in figuring out where the crowd is heading and getting out in front. If I am correct in that, it's time to change the direction the crowd is heading. No more being afraid to offend the tiny minority of westerners who wish to pay the Dhimmi tax instead so as to avoid conflict.

I very much wish this would be verified & exposed to warn our people.
It is likely that they own major portions of the other leftist main stream media news outlets as well. The coverage between them all is the same, so it must be so.
And it explains why the coverage is so tender toward the Arab/Palestinian terrorist cause, & so softly presenting the real intent of Islam - to enslave or butcher us as a people.
Our nation needs to realize our national press has been compromised by the enemy.

A question is asked above: if France is the moving force behind the Euro-Arab Dialogue, why is France opposed to Turkey's entry into the EU.
There are two things to note. One, France is NOT against Turkish entry. Chirac is all for it, and according to the French press, he was mightily embarrassed and chagrined when George Bush called for Turkey's entry into the EU, because he, Chirac, did not want to seem to be supporting something which Bush also supported. So he uttered something about not wanting to "take instruction" (words to that effect) from the likes of Bush, and it may have appeared, in the American press, that that meant that Chirac was opposed to Turkish entry.
Giscard d'Estaing, who recently died, was opposed -- but he was a politician of the pre-Euro-Arab Dialogue era. Giscard d'Estaing is remembered, of course, for a little car accident he had while returning home late at night from a visit to one of his great and good friends. But at least it was a great and good friend, not a paid lady of the night. Chirac, on the other hand, is wellknown for requiring the nearly-simultaneous services not of one, not of two, but of three -- count them, three! -- poules de luxe in order to ... well, in order to feel good.
What will be the experience be like for young and old European, 'life is good, live it man', peace lovers, when they realize that there are violent forces, entrenched, coming at them, aiming at the utter destruction of their way of life, caring not one bit about their very lives?

JTF, if I remember my WW2 history correctly, the peace-loving young Englishmen of the 30's, raised by a generation that had seen the horror of WWI, in turn marched off to the Royal Navy and to fly Spitfires when Hitler finally marched on Europe. Remember, too, that the Japanese grossly underestimated the American will to fight. The very fact that people are starting to awaken means that things are not lost. Besides, look on the bright side...the darker things are at the beginning, the better the stories told in the end.;)
Great points...and it is a different time, different folks, different cultural contexts, and a different kind of threat. But are we at the beginning of the beginning or the end of the beginning? The whole point of my post: Can we (together with the Euro-peace lovers (I am an American one)) stop this before we reach 'the end of the beginning', which for me means Europe at war with itself and America at the very least.

In his 1948 book, “1984”, George Orwell projected a world of three perpetually contending, totalitarian power-blocs, constantly warring, two-against-one in eternally-shifting alliances, in a closed, endless CYCLE, which no one of them can ever conclusively win - or lose - entirely maintained in motion, fundamentally, in order to keep the vital interior systems of the trio going and the whole global structure and dynamic rolling on, forever.
The three Giants he foresaw were “Oceania”, stretching from Australia eastward across the Pacific to embrace North America, then onwards spanning the Atlantic to Britain (“Airstrip One”), “Eastasia - mainly China, Japan and Korea and “Eurasia”, comprising of Europe and the (then) Soviet Union. Orwell wrote that the areas over which these three were always to be locked in fighting over would be Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Subcontinent of India, peninsular and archipelagic Southeast Asia and South and Central America.
Bat Ye’or implies that “Eurabia”’s an even more ambitious concept than Orwell’s sprawling “Eurasia”! Bringing Russia into intimate association with Europe is an OLD EU policy, but a future “Eurabia”’d include not Europe and Russia alone, but JOIN with them the 22 Mideast and North African lands of the Arab League. These Moslem territories would thereby NO LONGER be among the "zones of contestation" (as per “1984”), but a permanent, integral component of one of the Principals, yielding it an immense geo-strategic advantage. (First, a virtual carte blanche to indulge any “Eurabian” appetite for further domination, of all of Africa, Central Asia and India.)
An idea around is that the European élites are FAR too cynical to actually believe that there can ever be a FUNCTIONAL “syncretization” of Europe and Araby; the “Euro-Arab Dialogue”’s an elaborate charade to snow the Arabs, whilst the Europeans are preparing their coup.
Instead of a “merger”, it’s thought that what the EU (led by the French) really wishes for is a major conflict between the Arabs and the USA, severely depleting them both - to the extent that, once a sorely-weakened America eventually does leave the region, the Europeans (informally “neutral”, having enriched themselves from both sides), will then be able to waltz right in and take straight over, inexpensively and without opposition from the US, either.
The EU finally does NOT want the American’s notion of 21st Century globalization to prevail. It’s not willing to compete with the US; so, to STYMIE the advent of any US globalization, it’d be much to Europe’s benefit to secure a great tract of adjacent real-estate - as its own, exclusive, “natural” sphere of influence - excluding others from there and totally wrecking prospects for the universal, American scheme (with ITSELF consequently holding Machtspolitikal superiority).
The lofty reveries, dreamed in Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Geneva, Stockholm and Athens, of a European “Hyperpower”, could thus be made concrete and Hegemony over the planet could, at length, be restored from the “parvenu” America to the “mature, sophisticated” EU. (Incidentally, Bat Ye'or's so perspicacious: the last times that such “dreams” reared up, they were called Nazism and Communism....)
