Sami Abuhamatto, 24, was arrested Friday and was being held pending a hearing on Monday.There are no allegations that the case is terrorism-related....
Abuhamatto's six-month visitors visa expired in 1996, according to court documents. He applied for the pilot's license in May 2002, claiming he was a U.S. citizen born in Brookfield, the Chicago suburb where he lives, the documents show.
The Federal Aviation Administration approved the application less than a week later.
Authorities said they learned of the incident after Abuhamatto arranged a bogus marriage late last year in an effort to gain resident alien status.
Almost a Year after 911, they are still approving flight licenses?
And what is worse, no background check. If they had this guy would be back in his native country by now.

Well there are background checks being done on people who apply for a pilot's licenses.
However, to avoid the appearance of profiling (and the subsequent lawsuits by CAIR, ACLU, etc.) the FAA is only allowed to conduct background checks on a small subset (like 2 out of 10) of applicants who are muslim.
Further, if the muslim applicant is a foreign national from either Syria, Libya, Lebanon, Iran, etc. then only 1 out of 10 gets their background checked.
ANd the background checks on those muslim applicants is almost assuredly required to be conducted by muslims working for the FAA's Security Division in order to avoid any appearances of impropriety.
It appears that this young man overstayed his visitor's visa for some 8 years. It also appears that he was 15 or 16 years old when he entered the US. It can safely be assumed that he led a blameless life in the US, or else the secret police surely would have discovered his immigration status. He also received his pilot's license with no problem. Furthermore, the article makes no mention of his even being Muslim!
Perhaps there is some reason other than simple racism for publicising this case, but I for one don't see any.
