Iraq Militant Vows 'Peaceful Resistance'

Yes, and anyone who believes this, please contact me: I've got a suspension bridge, in excellent condition, available for purchase at a bargain price. From AP, with thanks to Jjpmackie:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The spokesman for militant Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr tempered threats to continue fighting Monday, saying his movement only planned to wage "peaceful resistance" against the interim government.

Al-Sadr issued a statement Sunday from his office in the Shiite holy city of Najaf calling the new interim Iraqi government "illegitimate" and pledging "to continue resisting oppression and occupation to our last drop of blood."

But Sadr's spokesman in Baghdad, Mahmoud al-Soudani, called a news conference Monday to clarify that the statement was not a call to arms. He said that many of al-Sadr's supporters in Baghdad had begun taking up arms again and he needed to correct their misperceptions.

"We are still committed to the cease-fire," al-Soudani said.

Pardon me if I am skeptical. Anyone who wants us to believe that resistance "to the last drop of blood" means peaceful dissent has not quite gained my full confidence.

from crazed militant costing the lives of several thousand of his rabid followers to gandhi. this guy has made quite a philosophical journey in short shrift. i'm interested in all 5 suspension bridges over the east river. can you give me a really good deal, robert?

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at his temperance. I'd bet good money that he got a very harsh death threat from someone with the method to do the job and now he's suddenly gotten sensible until his next "bout of Islamism" inspires him.

that credible death threat probably came from the united states marines -- then, when he went for backup from other shiites and/or iranis, they said, "you fight the marines, my brother, allah wills it, we will fight another day, allah akbar."

Hey, Mr. Spencer, you don't own the Brooklyn Bridge! Anyone who wants a share has to contact ME! Harhar

The sad part is that we should have taken out Al-Sadr like we said we would, not to mention crush the insurgents in Fallujah. Yes we would have been the big bad guy to the locales ( like we are not already? ) but we would leave and hand over the government to the interim government , big bad guys gone.

NOW however, the interim government is going to have to do the dirty work that we did not have the balls to do and that will turn yes , the interim government it's self into the big bad guys.

Stupid strategic move on our spineless part.
