Sure, Michael Moore, there is no terrorism in the US. A harrowing piece by Annie Jacobsen in Women'sWallStreet.com (thanks to Ruth King). Here are a few highlights. Please read it all. It is important not only for what it suggests about ongoing jihad activities in the USA, but also about our state of preparedness.
On June 29, 2004, at 12:28 p.m., I flew on Northwest Airlines flight #327 from Detroit to Los Angeles with my husband and our young son. Also on our flight were 14 Middle Eastern men between the ages of approximately 20 and 50 years old. What I experienced during that flight has caused me to question whether the United States of America can realistically uphold the civil liberties of every individual, even non-citizens, and protect its citizens from terrorist threats.On that Tuesday, our journey began uneventfully. Starting out that morning in Providence, Rhode Island, we went through security screening, flew to Detroit, and passed the time waiting for our connecting flight to Los Angeles by shopping at the airport stores and eating lunch at an airport diner. With no second security check required in Detroit we headed to our gate and waited for the pre-boarding announcement. Standing near us, also waiting to pre-board, was a group of six Middle Eastern men. They were carrying blue passports with Arabic writing. Two men wore tracksuits with Arabic writing across the back. Two carried musical instrument cases - thin, flat, 18 long. One wore a yellow T-shirt and held a McDonald's bag. And the sixth man had a bad leg -- he wore an orthopedic shoe and limped. When the pre-boarding announcement was made, we handed our tickets to the Northwest Airlines agent, and walked down the jetway with the group of men directly behind us.
My four-year-old son was determined to wheel his carry-on bag himself, so I turned to the men behind me and said, You go ahead, this could be awhile. No, you go ahead, one of the men replied. He smiled pleasantly and extended his arm for me to pass. He was young, maybe late 20's and had a goatee. I thanked him and we boarded the plan.
Once on the plane, we took our seats in coach (seats 17A, 17B and 17C). The man with the yellow shirt and the McDonald's bag sat across the aisle from us (in seat 17E). The pleasant man with the goatee sat a few rows back and across the aisle from us (in seat 21E). The rest of the men were seated throughout the plane, and several made their way to the back.
As we sat waiting for the plane to finish boarding, we noticed another large group of Middle Eastern men boarding. The first man wore a dark suit and sunglasses. He sat in first class in seat 1A, the seat second-closet to the cockpit door. The other seven men walked into the coach cabin. As aware Americans, my husband and I exchanged glances, and then continued to get comfortable. I noticed some of the other passengers paying attention to the situation as well. As boarding continued, we watched as, one by one, most of the Middle Eastern men made eye contact with each other. They continued to look at each other and nod, as if they were all in agreement about something. I could tell that my husband was beginning to feel anxious.
The take-off was uneventful. But once we were in the air and the seatbelt sign was turned off, the unusual activity began. The man in the yellow T-shirt got out of his seat and went to the lavatory at the front of coach -- taking his full McDonald's bag with him. When he came out of the lavatory he still had the McDonald's bag, but it was now almost empty. He walked down the aisle to the back of the plane, still holding the bag. When he passed two of the men sitting mid-cabin, he gave a thumbs-up sign. When he returned to his seat, he no longer had the McDonald's bag.
Then another man from the group stood up and took something from his carry-on in the overhead bin. It was about a foot long and was rolled in cloth. He headed toward the back of the cabin with the object. Five minutes later, several more of the Middle Eastern men began using the forward lavatory consecutively. In the back, several of the men stood up and used the back lavatory consecutively as well.
For the next hour, the men congregated in groups of two and three at the back of the plane for varying periods of time. Meanwhile, in the first class cabin, just a foot or so from the cockpit door, the man with the dark suit - still wearing sunglasses - was also standing. Not one of the flight crew members suggested that any of these men take their seats.
Watching all of this, my husband was now beyond anxious. I decided to try to reassure my husband (and maybe myself) by walking to the back bathroom. I knew the goateed-man I had exchanged friendly words with as we boarded the plane was seated only a few rows back, so I thought I would say hello to the man to get some reassurance that everything was fine. As I stood up and turned around, I glanced in his direction and we made eye contact. I threw out my friendliest remember-me-we-had-a-nice-exchange-just-a-short-time-ago smile. The man did not smile back. His face did not move. In fact, the cold, defiant look he gave me sent shivers down my spine.
When I returned to my seat I was unable to assure my husband that all was well. My husband immediately walked to the first class section to talk with the flight attendant. I might be overreacting, but I've been watching some really suspicious things... Before he could finish his statement, the flight attendant pulled him into the galley. In a quiet voice she explained that they were all concerned about what was going on. The captain was aware. The flight attendants were passing notes to each other. She said that there were people on board higher up than you and me watching the men. My husband returned to his seat and relayed this information to me. He was feeling slightly better. I was feeling much worse. We were now two hours into a four-in-a-half hour flight.
Approximately 10 minutes later, that same flight attendant came by with the drinks cart. She leaned over and quietly told my husband there were federal air marshals sitting all around us. She asked him not to tell anyone and explained that she could be in trouble for giving out that information. She then continued serving drinks.
About 20 minutes later the same flight attendant returned. Leaning over and whispering, she asked my husband to write a description of the yellow-shirted man sitting across from us. She explained it would look too suspicious if she wrote the information. She asked my husband to slip the note to her when he was done.
After seeing 14 Middle Eastern men board separately (six together, eight individually) and then act as a group, watching their unusual glances, observing their bizarre bathroom activities, watching them congregate in small groups, knowing that the flight attendants and the pilots were seriously concerned, and now knowing that federal air marshals were on board, I was officially terrified.. Before I'm labeled a racial profiler or -- worse yet -- a racist, let me add this. A month ago I traveled to India to research a magazine article I was writing. My husband and I flew on a jumbo jet carrying more than 300 Hindu and Muslim men and women on board. We traveled throughout the country and stayed in a Muslim village 10 miles outside Pakistan. I never once felt fearful. I never once felt unsafe. I never once had the feeling that anyone wanted to hurt me. This time was different.
Finally, the captain announced that the plane was cleared for landing. It had been four hours since we left Detroit. The fasten seat belt light came on and I could see downtown Los Angeles. The flight attendants made one final sweep of the cabin and strapped themselves in for landing. I began to relax. Home was in sight.
Suddenly, seven of the men stood up -- in unison -- and walked to the front and back lavatories. One by one, they went into the two lavatories, each spending about four minutes inside. Right in front of us, two men stood up against the emergency exit door, waiting for the lavatory to become available. The men spoke in Arabic among themselves and to the man in the yellow shirt sitting nearby. One of the men took his camera into the lavatory. Another took his cell phone. Again, no one approached the men. Not one of the flight attendants asked them to sit down. I watched as the man in the yellow shirt, still in his seat, reached inside his shirt and pulled out a small red book. He read a few pages, then put the book back inside his shirt. He pulled the book out again, read a page or two more, and put it back. He continued to do this several more times.
I looked around to see if any other passengers were watching. I immediately spotted a distraught couple seated two rows back. The woman was crying into the man's shoulder. He was holding her hand. I heard him say to her, You've got to calm down. Behind them sat the once pleasant-smiling, goatee-wearing man.
I grabbed my son, I held my husband's hand and, despite the fact that I am not a particularly religious person, I prayed. The last man came out of the bathroom, and as he passed the man in the yellow shirt he ran his forefinger across his neck and mouthed the word No.
The plane landed. My husband and I gathered our bags and quickly, very quickly, walked up the jetway. As we exited the jetway and entered the airport, we saw many, many men in dark suits. A few yards further out into the terminal, LAPD agents ran past us, heading for the gate. I have since learned that the representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the Federal Air Marshals (FAM), and the Transportation Security Association (TSA) met our plane as it landed. Several men -- who I presume were the federal air marshals on board -- hurried off the plane and directed the 14 men over to the side.
Knowing what we knew, and seeing what we'd seen, my husband and I decided to talk to the authorities. For several hours my husband and I were interrogated by the FBI. We gave sworn statement after sworn statement. We wrote down every detail of our account. The interrogators seemed especially interested in the McDonald's bag, so we repeated in detail what we knew about the McDonald's bag. A law enforcement official stood near us, holding 14 Syrian passports in his hand. We answered more questions. And finally we went home.

That was something that worried me on one flight to Canada, when I first began dating Jenn (talk about long distance!). This was in 2002. The planes in use on that flight were 40-seaters, and on that flight I was seated about halfway back. The two who happened to end up in the very front seats were... arabs.
In my case I am sure it was coincidence. And everyone who has to fly in for my wedding will be on small planes... but I will continue to be concerned.
I believe we know who many of the enemy are, and where they are, inside this country and outside it. Unfortunately, civil rights have stopped us from defending ourselves to the best of our abilities. After the next attack (experts say it in inevitable), I believe we will see a real change. The real (American) jihad will begin, and we will ruthlessly hunt down these monsters. The demand will be sent to foreign countries, lists of names and orders to turn them over to American authories. Those who fail to do so will suffer the consequences. It is sad that more innocent Americans will have do die before political correctness can be swept aside, and islam shown for the murderous perversion it truly is.
Nothing will be done until thousands MORE die. We are so terrified of offending Muslims that not a word or an action can be taken unless we are certain something is "really" happening.
In Canada, the criminalizing of Islamic charities by our intelligence services is completely unreported in the mainstream press.
In Canada, we continue to import hundreds of Islamic refugees which then have to be monitored as potential terrorists the moment that they step off the plane.
Have we all taken leave of our senses? Are we going insane collectively?

This is an important story, for many reasons. It is told quietly, without a hint of exaggeration, and the reader can easily imagine being on that plane, seeing those men, watching furtively with growing alarm. Even those whose mental pathologies (or conviction that "people are the same the whole world over" or people are "paranoid," or belief that Ashcroft runs a jack-booted Gestapo, or that Bush is evil, or that Israel is the fons et origo of our little misunderstanding with the "humiliated" Muslims) prevent them from seeing what is staring them in the face, will have a hard time not identifying with the narrator, and her justifiable alarm.
Her story needs to be sent to members of Congress; it needs wide distribution. Its lessons need to be pondered, and those lessons remain whether or not every single one of those 14 men was, or was not, an innocent musician.
The American public does not have to subject itself to plane rides that are themselves terrifying. There are, with an aging population, plenty of people who have medical conditions that are made worse if they have reason to believe that something terrible may happen. The panic felt by this lady, her husband, many other passengers, the flight crew, the sky marshals, and no doubt the pilots themselves (can such worries really be good for the concentration required of those pilots?), may not only be reflected in anxiety with direct physical results, but long-term anxiety. Why should those passengers be subject to such anxiety?
And the story is of course a metaphor as well. The Western world has allowed into its midst, and is fearful of offending, fearful of searching, fearful of even speaking about, that which is right there. You can see what the Muslim websites contain., including the decapitations which are used to inspire the faithful, to encourage them onward. You can read, at www.memri.com, what is said in sermons in Saudi Arabia and Egypt and around the world. You can see for yourself the practices of taqiyya and kitman, from Muslim spokesmen, from "scholars" both Muslim and non-Muslim who serve as convenient apologists, and politicians, including such "friends" as Musharraf (or even Hamid Karzai, if one follows closely what he says to exclusively Muslim audiences in Afghanistan and elsewhere). Why must we all come to live with the kind of emotions that beset this lady and the passengers and crew on that plane?
There has to be discussion of this. What is the maximum number of suspicious people -- i.e. Muslims -- who will be allowed to fly on the same plane? 50? 20? 2? What kinds of searches will be conducted -- a cursory glance, a pat-down, or a complete strip search, which non-Muslims will comply with, if necessary, and Muslims should get used to.
If there is another incident with a plane, will the survivors' families be allowed to sue the government for criminal negligence? Or will they be allowed to sue all those who created an atmosphere in which such negligence was not seen as negligence, but de rigueur observance of all the pieties of the age? Will they be allowed to sue the editorial writers at The New York Times? Or NPR? Or those in Congress who block appropritate measures for our safety?
Finally, if there are presidential debates, one hopes that this story may be told, in abbreviated fashion, and both candidates asked to respond. What, one wishes to know, do Bush and Kerry think of this story? Do they have any commments on current procedures for screening? Any comments on who should be allowed onto a plane? Any comments on who should be allowed to come to this country? Any comments on what constitutes perjury in the swearing of allegiance to this country? These are the matters that have to be raised.
If there is, looking in on this website, anyone with the wherewithal to pay for an advertisement that will ask these pertinent questions, and demand an answer, closer to the election, that would be useful.

But nothing happened. Absolutely nothing happened! Is not the racism and Islamophobia of the Americans on the plane obvious? How do you think the innocent men felt? Do you think that they were unaware of the hostile stares of the passengers and crew? I have little doubt that the poor innocent men were in fear for their lives.
Do you really believe that you can threaten and humiliate innocent people just because they are (presumably) Muslims and not pay a price for such behavior? How do any of you know the truth of this hysterical woman's fantastic tale? Do you not remember that only three days ago another woman falsely accused "Africans and North Africans" of a most heinous attack on her and her baby on a French train? Do you remember how you ranted, raved, and issued threats in that case? Are you not in the least bit suspicious of the current story?

I thought for sure the reason for congregating at the lavatories was for prayer, closest to allah and a reasonably high chance of a muhammad sighting.
Innocent men...innocent and muslim are never used in the same sentence. First of all how many adults need to use the bathroom THAT many times during a short flight...(I am SURE they all had some kind of bladder infection...right reza..lol)...furthermore MEN do not go to the bathroom in GROUPS...teenage GIRLS do, but not MEN. Face it they were up to no good and were stopped, too bad they didnt get into it with the air marshalls. If I were in that situation I would have taken my son off the plane and not flown, better safe than sorry. We flew in march to vegas and there were only 2 muslim men on the plane...along with several college football players on their break...they let these two know in not so many words that they would beat the sh*t out of them is they so much as blinked the wrong way...in fact one of the men got up to use the bathroom and 2 guys followed him...I felt pretty safe, but if I would have seen THAT many creepy muslims in the pre boarding area, no way I would have flown...those passengers should have banded together and REFUSED to fly with them...make the airline choose...15 scummy muslims or 150 passengers.

Truthfully, being as Muslim men are aware of the political climate these days, post 9/11, if they don't want to receive any "hostile glances" from the other passengers, they should act as normal as is possible - not go and act all weird and then feel victimized when people get suspicious. I mean, get a life.
I get the sense they were just playing the passengers trying to instill fear in them. Knowing full well that every eye on that plane was on them, they put on a show. Would they have been so blatant in their actions and acting suspicious if they were going to do something? If I'm the bad guy I get on the plane, take my seat, read a book, don't draw any undo attention to myself not even to pee. Then wait for the time for action.
OR, it could have been one of those dry runs to get reactions and according to the article..........ALL SYTEMS ARE GO!

I do NOT FEAR muslims....I LOATHE them...there is a difference.

The 9/11 hijackers did dry runs. That's exactly what this looks like to me.
I just can't believe that they were let go. Hopefully the government is following their every move, hoping they'll be in touch with the other "cells".

You can clearly see what the muslims plan of attack is when confronted with this type of situation:
1. DENY!!! the woman who told the story must be "crazy"

3. BLAME!! if a muslim cannot deny a situation then he must BLAME someone (usually a JEW) and/or try to shift the attention to something else (ie bringing up the tired old "abuse" photos..etc)

Could it be that what stopped them from whatever nefarious plan they were up to was the two F-18E's they saw flying on just off either side of the plane so close that they could read the name tag on the pilots uniform?
At that moment, they would've clearly understood that the only thing that the airplane was going to crash into was a Sidewinder Missile.
It is irrelevant whether or not these particular 14 Syrians were, or were not, innocent. The important point is that the passengers, the crew, the pilots, were all under terrific stress. They were under that stress because they lacked confidence in the screening procedures. Quite unnecessarily, people were subject to severe mental stress, in a situation which is already fraught with worry (few really like to take planes); this stress no doubt can affect the performance of pilots. It can also contribute to physical and mental distress of innocent passengers, who already must endure the stress that plane travel often creates.
This stress is a direct result of the general lack of faith in the thoroughness of the screening procedures, and in the absurd rules which, apparently, have been handed down from on high, according to which not more than 2 members of an identifiable group (that is to say, Muslims) may be stopped and subject to search for any given flight. This is madness, and it is known to everyone, and people are simply scared.
Why does the government not owe the citizens some assurance that everything is being done, without the inhibitions of "profiling" (it is ideological, not racial profiling -- an entirely different matter), to make them safe? Given that they have no such assurances when it comes to flying, it is perfectly understandable that people would react as this lady, quite sane and studied in her telling of her own story, did. Who would not share her anxieties, who does not identify with her fears, and her desire to tell her story?
In addition to the quite unnecessary stress that we must endure because of government fears of offending Muslims (what nonsense this all is -- if anyone complains, show them chapter and verse in Qur'an and hadith, show them the contents of khutbas delivered all over the world, show them the behavior of the handful of Muslim troops in Iraq, including the one who murdered his fellow soldiers, and the one who very likely deserted to make his way to Lebanon, point out the complete absence of any attempt, by any organized Muslm group, to recognize and own up to the tenets of Islam, and to firmly dissassociate themselves from those tenets), there is another matter.
That is expense. How much money was spent on the air marshals? How much money is spent on the extra screening? How much money is wasted in billions of man-hours now spent waiting in longer lines at airports because one positively must show up much earlier than before? How much money is spent on all those F.B.I. and police and Homeland Security personnel, waiting at LAX when the plane arrived? How much money is spent on translators, on court-appointed lawyers, on judges, on the whole panoply of our justice system, for these 14 men alone? Why, with their Syrian passports, were they admitted at all into this country? Some idiotic idea about cultural exchange? Some pressure put by a constituent who simply had to have this particular group of musicians, innocent or not, play somewhere in the United States? We can do without. We owe our own citizens just a bit more in the way of assurances that everything is being done to minimize the threat, even if perfectly innocent musicians are denied visas. We don't know. We can't know, who is and who is not to be trusted. We have a great deal of evidence that the tenets of Islam all go one way; we know about taqiyya and kitman. We have reason to believe that the vast majority of the world's Muslims do not wish us well. That being the case, why do we hesitate a minute not to at least undertake the minimum measures necessary to permit people to fly without this kind of awful experience?
Innocence here is irrelevant. What is being indicted are the procedures, and attitudes, that give rise to a completely justified fear.
And, of course, if this was a trial run, of one kind or another, then there is nothing else that need be said.

There's a problem with the whole "musicians" story: where are the instruments? If they are truly travelling as a "band" then they would definitely be carrying at least some of their prized instruments as carry-ons. I can't find any reference to anything like a musical instrument bag in the article. The author wouldn't have been able to miss this because musical instruments have very uniquely shaped cases.
And professional musicians have one thing in common across all cultures -- they prize their main instruments and will not trust them to baggage carriers if the instruments can be fit in the overhead compartments.
How do I know this?
It just so happens I was a professional musician for more than a decade.
The musician excuse is a lie in my opinion, and I'd bet good money that they are duping investigators by claiming their Middle Eastern instruments are provided for them at their destinations OR they just allow them to be loaded into baggage with normal luggage. Either excuse is highly suspect but a perfect cover since most of the world population is clueless to the subtleties of the travelling musician lifestyle.

I really wondered about the part where they're about to land, everyone's fastened in, and the Middle Easterners suddenly get up to go use the loo. I remember a flight several years back (way before 9/11) where somebody went to go to the bathroom at this point and one of the flight attendants firmly and stridently ordered that person back in their seat. There was no arguing with the flight attendant, she made it real clear! Ever since then, I've made sure I've used the loo way before landing. She scared the heck out of me. Why not this time? Especially when it was several of them? Are we so afraid of offending Muslims that we'll let them do what they damn well please whenever they want? I suppose they could use the excuse that it's time to pray at that specific moment. Can't keep Allah waiting or anything, not even if it means your own safety is at risk. What if one of them got injured due to not being safely strapped in their seats? Could they successfully sue the airlines? Probably. And for millions.
I think this was definitely a practise run. To see what people do, or don't do, as in this case. Too scary. This makes me want to stick to flights by companies that employ air marshalls.

As an avid reader of horror stories , I've really got to say that was the most terrifying story I have ever read. As a pilot, I can tell you the negative effect of stress does exist and it's called automatic rough.
This is what happens and it has an autonomic physiological basis. Say you are the pilot, sitting in the left seat fat dumb and happy. Suddenly you believe (correctly or incorrectly) something is wrong. Adrenalin begins to rush into your bloodstream, heightening all your senses. Everything not only seems louder, it IS louder. (It's called automatic rough because under this stress the engine will seem to be running rough.) You now hear every tiny sound the engine is making, you soon become convinced something is drastically wrong, you compensate, probably you are compensating for nothing, hence you have just done something terrible. You are now on path where you are making mistakes by compensating for problems which didn't exist initially but now certainly do, unfortunately, you are doing them to yourself. If you don't have incredible presence of mind or something breaks into this scenario alerting you to the reality, you begin to distrust all your instruments. If you are flying in daytime under VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions, probably no problem, after all you can see the sky is still up, the earth is still down. Maybe you can land in a field or on a highway. If IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) disorientation will win and you are probably going to corkscrew into the ground or into the ocean like JFK Jr.
The news report will call it pilot error.
In the case of 14 Muslim musicians playing their instruments in the lav or bombmaking who knows, it's more likely termed pilot terror.
The American legal system is far from perfect, but it's a lot closer than most. It's that whole 'beyond a reasonable doubt' idea where it's seen as better to aquit a guilty person go than convict an innocent.

These men were exhibiting suspicious behavior. I think the fears that the passengers had were absolutely justified. Unless you are completely partisan, it is very difficult to argue that these acts were not suspicious:
What concerns me most is that though something was obviously going on, neither the flight crew nor the air marshals onboard made any attempt to restrict the activity of these men.
Reza and Keira can complain of racial profiling all they want, but common sense dictates that when 14 men from a known terrorist-sponsoring state board the same flight and begin to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with tactics that we know are used by militant groups to assemble weapons and/or bombs, then they need to be separated if not restrained. The flight crew, once alerted to this behavior, should have immediately diverted to the nearest possible airport.
Keira, you accuse us of profiling in one breath and them make broad sweeping generalizations that are far worse in the next. At seventeen, you claim to be more intelligent than an entire group of people from around the world, many with advanced degrees and from disparate cultures. Let’s test that.
With your wealth of experience and intellect, perhaps you could explain to us explicitly who brought down the towers, and how the terrorists managed to highjack those flights, in detail. Also, being so intelligent and omnipotent, you will be able to explain how the actions of the passengers of the particular flight on this thread acted in a manner inconsistent with building an explosive device or assembling weapons in flight. You will also be able to tell us why it would be wrong for federal air marshals, specifically trained in counterterrorism, to feel a threat existed on this flight as they obviously did.
Also, you will be able to explain to us how we are all racists. As the vast majority of posters on this board that I have personal contact with are from the same racial group as the suspicious men on this flight, could you address that issue? I look forward to your astute comments.

Why is blood and death demanded by this all knowing, all powerful creature?

How the vile tenents of this creed are considered by any modern human being to be a valid guide for the conduct of one's life is beyond me.
We as human beings have on average about seventy some odd years of life, less in many parts of the world due to our own mismanagement. When we die no one knows what happens to our "soul." We can claim with certainty to believe in what will happen but until you die it is all dreams and hope. What we do know with certainty is that for a short time we have world filled with incredible variety and we have the power of choice. It is a choice to kill for the mandate of an unseen and bloodthirsty "God" that
baffles me. To spend the short time we have killing or simpling pineing for some mystical afterlife where we are rewarded either with the privelege of constantly groveling before the throne or engaging in some kind of Islamic orgy is a deranged way to live.

It seems to me that the most important issues this story brings out are the issues of our security and of profiling. The story could be apocryphal. Maybe it's accurate, maybe it's not. Maybe these 14 men were musicians, maybe not.
Maybe we're paranoid, maybe we sound like racists. But why is that? We know that on 9/11, 19 middle eastern men hijacked four planes and murdered thousands of people. We know that countless fatwas have been issued approving and encouraging hatred and murder of Americans, Jews, infidals, crusaders and unbelievers.

The story is scary and intriguing. My first thought is that if they intended to commit a terrorist act on the plane, they would not have boarded so many men. It was bound to rouse suspicion. However, since they were not confronted by any authority on the plane, perhaps they had already run "test runs" & knew they would not be confronted. Regarding the possibility that the men were using the lavatories to pray, I find it hard to believe that it would be considered acceptable to pray in a bathroom. I would welcome a Muslim's comment on this. I would also like to hear the comments of a Muslim on how he would have liked authorities to behave in such a situation. Presumably most Muslims would like to fly safely and yet not have their civil rights violated. It's a real problem.

Oh, and as to the "Praying in the Bathroom" comment... I know from my exposure to Judaism that such an idea is ludicrous in that faith - I would have to believe it is the same in Islam. My gosh! If you can't even be in the middle of the prayer services should you need to "break wind," then how much more important would it be to stay away from the toilet. Have you all ever thought of the possibility that this had nothing to do with the people on the plane? Is it possible that what they were doing was setting things up to dump chemical or bacteriological materials from the plane? The bathrooms themselves have openings in them that open up to the ground - did you see how Frank Abegnale escape in the movie "Catch Me If You Can?" Could these men have another different type of nepharious plot in mind and they are using airlines to accomplish it? Remember what that one article said about spreading anthrax from the top of a skyscraper. How much more coverage could you have if you launched such an attack from a jet in flight. Maybe launching VX or something else is possible if it is weaponized. We have to start thinking outside of the box here.

Got news for that little girl...my husband is a cop and the cops watch the muslim cops like a hawk...they hate and despise them, they do not consider them part of the brotherhood, they are outsiders. Of course they cant say these things publicly, but they NEVER include the muslim cops in anything, and refuse to partner with them for safety reasons (ie a muslim is threatening the life of an officer...will the muslim officer shoot the muslim to save his partner??? Reading the comments on this unsettling story, no-one seems to suspect that when the flight attendant said there were Federal Air Marshals on board, she was blowing smoke. She starts by 'I'm not supposed to say this, but...'; yeah, right. If there WERE FAMs on board, it seems to me they would have done something, long before the landing approach. Using that line is probably a method used to calm people down.
Since reading this story, I've read several others, and they've each ended with Law Enforcement Agents rushing onto the plane AFTER landing. Doesn't that indicate that there is a possibility that there AREN'T any FAMs on board? Which is the limitation of even good police: they can't prevent much from happening, and usually don't get get involved until after something bad occurs.
If you're 30,000 feet above ground when that something bad happens, those LEA waiting at the arrival point aren't much help. Todd Beamer and his fellow heroes (RIP) could explain that.
Perhaps Whistling Dixie (a previous pilot poster above) could shed some insight: how common are FAMs on domestic flights?

All this welcome talk of profiling reminds me of a trip from Honolulu to San Francisco me and the guys took back in Jan 2002. At the American Airlines check-in for the flight were six or seven Arab men (mid 20s) who were glaring at the rest of the passengers. I'm sure we weren't the only ones who noticed them. They kept huddling togteher and would have looked suspicious even if they had been boy scouts. Anyhow, we kept thinking "It's OK, security will pick one of them out for a quick search." But they didn't. Let me tell you who the American Airlines security people decided to pick out for a closer baggage search. Two little old ladies in their late 6os/early seventies, a blonde surfer kid carrying a towel and flip-flops, a pregnant women travelling with a uniformed US Marine and a Hawaiian guy travelling with his wife and two young kids. Security be damned - random searches without profiling is a waste of time. Apparently the hurt feelings of Muslims are more important then the lives of innocent people. Political correctness means fighting with one hand behind your back and a blindfold over your eyes.
Regarding those Federal Air Marshalls' on board, the muslim guys with Syrian passports WERE THE AIR MARSHALLS!
You see.. They were hired as part of Homeland Security's Affirmative Action policies which, I gather, were instituted because there weren't enough Syrians and to foster a more diverse working environment.
Actually, I believe there are still a few air marshall slots open because they can't get enough former Taliban Afghanies to apply.
Also, didn't Homeland Security Hiring Personnel recently fly down to Guantanamo interviewing some of the prisoners down there as possible new hires? I think the jobs they were looking to fill were for people to guard our nuclear stockpiles..
Lucky for you and us, all measures put in place on domestic flights have not been revealed to the public. I can assure you there will be quite a few surprises awaiting the next 7700. Feel confident you will not have to go it alone. A lot of people are having to bite their lip as the news media trashs their plan even though they only know 1/2 of 1 percent of what is going to happen when its happens. I feel good about the measures that are now in place and remmember there will not be any question in your pilots mind as to what length he should go to at the first sign of trouble. Surprise was the only thing that made the maggots complete their deed on 9/11 and that surprise is gone.
