July 19, 2004 -- WASHINGTON — American officials believe that millions of dollars Saddam Hussein skimmed from the scandal-plagued U.N. oil-for-food program are now being used to help fund the bloody rebel campaign against U.S. forces and the new Iraqi government, The Post has learned.U.S. intelligence officials and congressional investigators said last night that the "oil-for-insurgency link" has been recently unearthed in the numerous probes now under way into the giant U.N. humanitarian program, in which Saddam is believed to have pocketed $10.1 billion through oil smuggling and kickbacks from suppliers....
U.S. intelligence officials believe a portion of the funds in these hidden accounts — possibly millions— is now being used to fund the Ba'athist guerrillas responsible for much of the postwar violence against coalition troops, sources said.
"We are still in the early stages of investigating this. But from what we know so far, it's the same financial system, and we believe there is now some connection between what was left over from the illegal profiteering under the oil-for-food program and the funding of insurgency," said a U.S. official familiar with the recent intelligence information.
U.S. officials revealed earlier this month that a network of Saddam's cousins led by Fatiq Suleiman al-Majid, a former henchman in Saddam's murderous Special Security Organization, is involved in funding and arming the militants.
Investigators found a money trail connected to Saddam's clansmen that flowed through banks in Syria. Some of these same banks, congressional investigators said, also handled the kickback depos- its during the oil-for-food program.
Another reason why Saddam was laughing at U.S. sanctions all those years. Of course the network is still active. Saddam's cousins are financing the insurgents from Syria.
I'm sure there are many that have taken kickbacks to be part of this network that are located here in the United States. I hope no cover up will be made as the U.N. is attempting to do in the Oil for Food Scandal. Look at the big, big picture.

If the leader of the United Nations says that oil-for-food money IS NOT going to fund the so-called insurgency which is killing Americans and foreign workers, then it must be true. Right?

Do muslim arabs realize how LUCKY they are to be sitting on oil....if they were sitting in a barren desert with nothing that anyone else in the world wanted (and lets face it they havent contributed much...hell they couldnt even get the oil out of the ground without infidel technology)..we wouldnt be having any of these discussions. Its because of oil that they have anything at all, without oil and the worlds dependency on it they would be mere backwards people wallowing around in the sand.
The oil sales revenue that was flowing under the noses of the UN "Office of the Iraq Program" has still not been properly accounted for. This is one of the scandals of the century (so far). In the two years prior to the war, the Saddam regime was selling oil from a Syrian terminal, serviced by a pipeline that had been out of use since the two Baathist "brothers" fell out. A modest amount of desk research would have told the UN most of what it needed to know about this. Why wasn't it done?
What happened to the cash from this sales effort - which in dollar terms was far from being peanuts - is still not transparent. But major oil companies (French maybe?) were clearly involved in the scam. This is part of the WMD story that has not been told. Anyone know anything?
The fact that Kofi Annan and his cronies at the UN are blocking, stalling, misleading, obfuscating, and otherwise hindering in every way possible the investigation in that billion dollar scam tells you something right there..
I've said it before and I'll say it again -- the U.S. needs to leave the U.N. and boot France from NATO.
Think back to the sanctions put on Iraq. Saddam just watched his people drop like flys, using them as mere political props to show how " evil" the United States is, all the while pocketing billions of dollars. What a jackass.
And to think millions of people around the world sympathised with him, urging America not to attack him in some misguided assumption that they were helping world " peace ".
It should be self evident that there can be no serious attempt at world peace as long as ruthless, manical jackasses like Saddam are in power. The " peace " of the Iraqi people falling out to their deaths while Saddam pockets billions is worse than war.
