Now that hudna has come to Najaf and all is peaceful, it is most interesting to note that Al-Sadr has not made clear exactly to what he has agreed. That way, of course, he has a pretext to resume fighting whenever he wishes, and believes himself strong enough. In traditional Islamic law, Muslim forces may only agree to a truce in order to gather strength to fight again more effectively. From the New York Times:

Najaf is the Shia's most important sacred and holy shrine. The tomb holds Imam Ali (Muhamed's son-in-law) tomb ...no less than the very founder of Shia-ism.
There is one of the oldest (since the 7th centuary)cemeteries there and the world's largest (over 6 miles long)and still functioning.
It is said that the those buried there go stright to all merciful Allah(SWT).
Can I suggest that as a magnanamous gesture.. the American soldiers that died there ...be buried in the cemetry there. In this way they will go stright to merciful Allah (SWT) for blessing.

Besides, if the soldiers who died there are truely Christians, then they were saved to begin with and their place of internment or the manner thereof, is immaterial. God will resurrect everyone anyway -- either unto judgement, or to eternal life. This is the ONLY thing that needs to be feared.
So, what other historical insights regarding this cemetary can you share with us?

I am confused The mulsums keep talking about this holy shrine? Does this not mean that they worship Idols that they hold a place more holy than their children ? Or could it be like all mulsum in the past and have converted a Christian church to a mosque? Like the Parthenon in Greece ? The history channel had a very intresting lesson last night about how a mulsum converted it from a church to a Harmon and a mosque and stored all their gunpowder in the mosque? [Parthenon]

As to your other question as you have shown an interest, here is a little about Najaf.
To the North and East of Najaf, there are acres of graves and myriads of domes of various colours and at various stages of disrepair, (made much worse due to the recent bombing there. The road to Najaf follows a winding course through this vast cemetery. It uis estimated that upto 2 million muslims are buried there from all over the world.
The Prophet Ibrahim(a.s.) had come to this place along with Prophet Ishaq(a.s.). They made Najaf their permanent dwelling-place after Ibrahim(a.s.) agreed to do so on condition that the people would sell him the valley behind the village for cultivation.
Pophet Ishaq(a.s.) protested and said that this land was neither fit for farming nor grazing, but Ibrahim(a.s.) insisted and assured him that the time would come when there would be a tomb there with a shrine, at which seventy thousand people would gain absolutely undisputed entrance to Paradise, and be able also to intercede for many others.
The valley that Ibrahim(a.s.) wanted to buy is called the Valley of Peace (Wadi-us-Salaam), and is related on the authority of the fourth Imam - Imam Sajjad(a.s.) that Imam Ali(a.s.) once said that this ValIey of Peace is part of Heaven and that there is not a single one of the believers in the world, whether he dies in the east or west, but his soul will come to this Paradise to rest. As there is nothing hidden in this world from my eyes," Ali(a.s.) went on to say, "I see all the believers seated - here in groups and talking with one another."
Najaf got it’s name by the following tradition. At first there was a mountain there, and when one of the sons of Prophet Nooh(a.s.) refused to enter the Ark, he said that he would sit on this mountain until he would see where the water would come. A revelation came therefore to the mountain, "Do you undertake to protect this son of mine from punishment?" And all at once the mountain fell. to pieces and the son of Noah was drowned. In place of the mountain a large river appeared, but after a few years the river dried up, and the place was called Nay-Jaff, meaning, "the dried river."
"The Mausoleum itself of Imam Ali(a.s.) at Najaf, is breathtaking. There is one large central dome which stands out of a square-shaped ornate structure at the two sides of which are two minarets. The predominant colour of'the exterior is gold, bright shining gold and the entire exterior of the mausoleum is inlaid with a mosaic pattern of light powder blue, white marble, gold again with an occasional splash of Middle East rust."
Countless number of people from all over the world flock to his tomb day after day to pay their respects and to offer salutations and to pray to Allah(swt) seeking his intercession.
When somebody goes on a pilgrimage to Najaf, I always request that person to offer salutations on my behalf, and to pray to God - for some particular favour - and to seek Imam Ali's(a.s.) intercession.

I am curious about the derivation of this "authority," could you elaborate.
Also, it seems there was a bit of capitalistic real estate speculation going on regarding this valley among the teachers -- or prophets.
Obviously, you have a sense of reverance for the locale and I'm sure that the architecture is no less than stunning.
However, does it concern you then, that given the apparent significance of the place, that Al-Sadr would want to steer a war situation away from the place so as to preserve it? Especially from those he views as "infidels" who may not have any similar regard for the place?
Or is there the rational on his part, that if he dies in battle there, that he will go to what he believes is heaven? That seems rather self-serving to me at least since the whole area and everyone elses entry to the same satus is jeapordized for al-Sadr's own sake.
The tactical move of steering the battle there is transparently obvious if al-sadr's sole purpose is to curry political sympathy in the sort term -- but this only works so long as our side does not have a leader such as Titus of Rome.
I would caution against relying on that ploy for too long -- after all, al-Sadr owes you something in the way of stewardship since the place is apparently sacred to you.

Mr Witness, I believe that Al-Sadr is only there for two reasons.
1) He feels safe, the Americans wouldn't dare attack , destroy the shrine withoutincuring the wrath of Shia muslims worldwide, not something that Americans want if they are trying to instill democracy here. I have to say the Americans have been quite canny with this policy, (at least they see the bigger picture) ...yet it ties them up somewhat stupid. The muslim world sees that "the mighty" Al-Sadr is holding back the most powerful army in history merely through words and a thousand believers.
There is little doubut that he is a very astute and canny leader. I can see the large American frustration on this blog and countless othesrs. Anyone else would have died long ago at the hands of the Americans (or Iraqis).
2) Should the American's attack teh shrine I have little doubt that he will exact a heavy political price from the Americans (he can see the bigger picture too albiet a different one to teh American one). By having the shrine destroyed, teh Americans will not find it easy to step though global politics so easily. The "might is right" rule will have to apply ...falling foul of democracy is right.

PRUDHOE BAY, Alaska — Just mentioning "ANWR") and oil drilling in the same breath is bound to touch off a controversy.
But the governor of Alaska says it's a non-issue because he plans to search for oil on state land just off the shore from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski () said he is encouraging oil companies to begin test drilling as early as January on the first three miles of submerged land off the Alaska coast, land that belongs to the state.
"We are a sovereign state and we have this authority and I hope we find a big puddle down there," Murkowski said.
Two years ago, Congress scratched a plan to explore for oil in ANWR after environmental groups argued it would harm the native porcupine caribou. Now, groups say drilling by the state could decimate the seal, polar bear and bowhead whale supply, which Eskimos () rely on for sustenance.
"This isn't environmentalists being alarmists ... it's a situation where we're being alarmed," said Bob Randall of Trustees for Alaska (

Maginot Kerry Still Fighting The Wrong War

John Kerry is still fighting the Cold War. The Democrat candidate is apparently lost in the jungles of Vietnam, reliving his youthful adventures of non-existent patrols into Cambodia and shooting wounded enemy soldiers in the back.
On August 18th, Kerry stated before the Veterans of Foreign Wars that he opposed the re-deployment of U.S. troops from Asia and Europe back to America to defend the U.S. homeland.
Kerry's reasoning is based on Cold War logic. He cited the proposed withdrawal of 12,000 soldiers from South Korea as sending "the wrong signal" to Pyongyang. He also noted that Korea was perhaps the most dangerous location in the world today.
Of course, true to his absent-minded Senator character, on August 1st, Kerry told George Stephanopoulos that he would "significantly change the deployment of troops" in places like "the Korean peninsula" and in "Europe". Kerry pledged a "significant enormous reduction" in U.S. troops stationed abroad.
Since his recent flip-flop on the status of the U.S. military, it is clear that Kerry is having flash-backs, perhaps due to PMS or "Political Motivation Syndrome."
However, flip-flops and "significant enormous" badly worded English aside, the Kerry critique of reducing U.S. troop levels to 25,000 in South Korea shows that the Senator is fighting the wrong war. Kerry is stuck in a Maginot Line mentality with his French allies.
Missile Threat
The threat in Korea is not the 1.2 million man North Korean Army - as if 37,000 U.S. troops would make a difference against a DPRK attack. The real threat is North Korean missiles tipped with nuclear and chemical weapons.
To that Kerry's answer is to cancel the U.S. national missile defense. Kerry would continue "research" but leave America and her allies vulnerable to Kim Jung Il and his newfound WMD on missiles.
Kerry also pledged that he would make absolutely certain that, as President, his decisions would be based on credible intelligence. Yet, Senator Kerry has a long history of making national security decisions on flawed intelligence that he never questioned.
In the case of North Korea, nukes and missiles, Kerry bought the politically motivated and thoroughly untrue CIA report generated by the Clinton administration that the DPRK could not deploy a missile capable of striking the U.S.
The CIA report supplied in 1998 by the Clinton administration to Kerry estimated that North Korea would require 10-15 years to develop a missile capable of delivering a chemical, biological, or nuclear warhead.
On May 13, 1998 John Kerry spoke in opposition to the American Missile Protection Act of 1998, a proposal to build a national defense against long-range ballistic missiles.
"The simple truth, Mr. President, is that only Russia and China have such missiles, and despite the fact that some rogue nations such as North Korea have been working to develop more advanced ballistic missiles, our intelligence and military leaders do not expect those threats to materialize for a decade or more," stated Kerry.
"The vote today is about whether - at a time before a real ballistic missile threat from sources other than Russia and China exists, at a time before we perfect the anti-missile technology on which we have been energetically working for years so that we know it is ready to be deployed-we will make a national commitment of scores of billions of dollars to field the nonexistent system against nonexistent threats," said Kerry.

Of course, the leader of North Korea, Kim Jung Il, was working to a different timetable than the Senator from Massachusetts. John Kerry's prediction of "a decade or more" turned out to be off by nine years and nine months.
Three months after Kerry spoke, on August 31 1998, North Korea launched the Taepodong I ballistic missile. The "nonexistent" North Korean missile flew over Japan and dropped a dummy nuclear warhead off the U.S. coast.
The North Korean missile did more than simply make John Kerry look like a fool. It also discredited the phony CIA report to our allies. Japan noted that U.S. satellite photos should have been able to detect the Taepodong launch in advance. Tokyo, however, was not privy to the photos because of the Clinton administration political lie to cover-up the WMD effort in North Korea.
In response, Japan decided to orbit its own intelligence satellites so it would not have to depend on unreliable allies such as Washington. Japan has since put several such satellites into orbit at great expense. Trenches and barbwire do not stop ballistic missiles. Today, instead of addressing the current situation with 21st century solutions, John Kerry proposes to solve the Korean crisis with World War I tactics.

Guards Finger Berger in Sox Docs Heist
After three days worth of denials from his legal team, eyewitnesses to Sandy Berger's top secret document heist have confirmed that the former national security advisor did indeed stash national security secrets in his socks, as well as his pants pockets.
"The stuffed socks and pockets is real," a senior law enforcement official told the New York Daily News. "The (theft) was reported by the guards." Guards at the National Archives told the FBI that Berger was observed stuffing his socks with handwritten notes about files he reviewed that were going to the Sept. 11 panel, the News said.

News is conflicting; one account’s of the populist Ayatollah Muqtada el-Sadr accepting offers from the Iraqi National Interim Government to enter the new political structure, demobbing his “Mahdi Army” and decamping from the Imam Ali Shrine. Another, though, says that American strikes on sites around the Mosque have resumed, following el-Sadr’s rejection of any such deal.
There’ve been ominous warnings from the international press that the destruction of the Imam Ali Mosque in the Shi’a Holy City of Najaf, in southern Iraq, could precipitate the “civilizational clash” which the West’s been attempting so hard, for three years, to AVOID.
Ayatollah Muqtada el-Sadr’s perfectly aware of this and will be trying to get the US to badly damage or demolish the Grand Mosque - and, to be SURE that this transpires (utterly uncaring of his own life or those of the people of the town), he’s rigged the building and its precincts with explosives, set to go off en series and in placements that America can be blamed for the grossest Sacrilege, as the Great Golden Dome goes down in flames. El-Jazeera and its ilk will be there to bring the drama to the viewers back home, in the dar el-Islam and to every corner….
Lost in the fury will be the dead CERTAINTY that Imam el-Sadr introduced his “Mahdi Army” militia - with their weapons - into the Mosque, in the first instance, months ago. Notwithstanding the hallows of any religious site, if it’s turned into a bristling, armed camp, a depot for materiél, a barracks and dining-hall for gunmen, then its Sanctity must be FORFEIT - Punkt.
But no Jihadi zealot can stomach this FACT without actual Apostasy. Thus, he’s left - within his tragic, closed-cycle, pre-modern mindset - with no choice but ultra-violence in mad “Holy War”, unable to deal with the Moral Logic that (here anyhow) YOU CAN’T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS. In his religious cult, however, behaviours like this - el-Sadr’s fortification of the Ali Shrine and using it as a base - are fundamentally built in, inseparable, Koranically precedented.
The Western refusal to DEFER to this (and then, so egregiously, to commence COUNTERING it), to the radical Islamists is highly Offensive, a pronounced Insult, ultimately a Blasphemy; it’s tantamount - in their grotesquesly distorted perspective - to sorely dissing a KEY component in their collective Central Identity (which, dispassionately, it’s quite liable that it is), delegitimizing their presumed DIVINE RIGHT to ply Jihad, by ANY means desired.
Indeed, this tenet’s one of their CORE “spritual” elements, an atavistic dynamo, that once, in the 7th Century, virtually in a trice, propelled Araby into an enormous, “religious” slave-Empire, lasting for centuries. In its fevered onslaught, Islam swept over the Byzantines and Sassanids, when each was in a declining phase in its history (though the Byzantine, Eastern Roman, Empire doggedly managed somehow to hang on - ever-diminishing - for roughly another 800 years).
Predominantly Arab-led, Moslem gains then continued apace. Soon they were expanding past el-Jib el-Tariq, unto sweet el-Andalus in the Northwest, through Centrasia into western China on the Northeast, into India and to the Far Indies in the Southeast, then down to West Africa in the Southwest, via Zanzibar, carrying Fire & Sword to all points of the compass.
Today, following months of irreconcilable disagreement on an item of Principle, where el-Sadr CANNOT countenance his ARMED actions as Breaches of the Sanctity of the Ali Mosque, and its environs, then, if the site’s shattered, the culpability, the blame, belongs purely to him and his thugs - whether they blow the Sacred Shrine sky-high or not, or if the US does it - because the blast would never have become possible if HE hadn’t been shipping his ordnance and men in there for half a year, hypocritcally flaunting the centre’s consecrated status, from the moment.
El-Sadr probably imagined that he’d be lionized, like the “Palestinian” terrorists who seized the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem in 2002 - at minimum earning a nice holiday in Europe, or Iran, or Lebanon, prior to slipping back into southern Iraq, at leisure, to foment further mischief. - Instead, the USMC’s hot on his tail, already wounding him (if lightly, in the hand).
Marine raids and incursions on Najaf - advances to constrict the Sadrist fighters and to reduce their quantity - have progressed, by accounts, taking most of the sprawling (the biggest on Earth, up to 5 MILLION graves) “Valley of Peace” Cemetery and parts of the Old City yesterday.
Despite anti-American reportage, reputedly, the contemporary battle hasn’t, to date, attained the pitch or the drastic methods of the Russians’ recapture of Grozny (regained mainly by sustained tank-fire and that of mobile artillery and rockets, until the remnant of the Chechen Jihadis was physically driven out of the rubble, its bare rump headed in a hurry south, into the mountains).
But it’s nonetheless been horrendously gruelling for the US personnel in Najaf, painful, lethal. Urban warfare has been raging, on and off, inside the town for over a fortnight, rather than the USAF carpet-bombing it. Washington’s endeavouring to pull this all off (el-Sadr being “lifted” or duly “martyred”) with the Mosque/Shrine standing largely intact.
The White House could be unable to conceive of anybody so dastardly as to deliberately detonate a Holy Place, but the ranks of Islamo-fascism brim with such fanatical specimens, who’ll do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING for their “Cause”, among them el-Sadr - again, he’s mined the Grand Mosque and its compound with explosives!
The US Administration fancies that, with the Sadrists increasingly being confined to the Major Edifice by aggressive Marine patrols, under intense air-cover, should the Mosque itself next require forced entry, meeting opposition, the sortie ought to be conducted exclusively by trained, IRAQI commandos, finally so that any consequent damage to the premises is the sovereign National Interim Government’s responsibility (though the GUILT for it always lies with the terrorists). There’s nowhere here any guarantee whatever of the Grand Mosque outlasting the combat, nor that the crack Iraqi squads, assembling near Najaf, will complete their mission at all.
Objectively, the Imam Ali Mosque is DOOMED, unless another approach is ventured: the Nord-Ost gas - in this case, unlike the theatre in Moscow in 2003, the number of persons surviving the storming is NOT a priority. Worth a shot - at this stage, there’s nothing much to lose by it!
