Investigators are trying to determine whether a San Diego sailor passed Navy secrets about security weaknesses and warship movements to a British man accused of having terrorist links, according to court documents unsealed yesterday. E-mail messages from the unnamed sailor, sent in late 2000 and 2001 before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, were found in December in computer files belonging to Babar Ahmad, who was detained Wednesday in London, according to the 31-page arrest affidavit....Investigators say the messages were sent from a Benfold e-mail account, including one in which the sailor wrote that he was on active duty in the Middle East....
The e-mail messages extolled the bombing of the destroyer Cole in October 2000 and the actions of Muslim fighters in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Chechnya, according to the affidavit documents.
A return message from Ahmad's computer account "praised the enlistee's comments and encouraged the enlistee to 'keep up with the dawah (an Arabic term for missionary work) and the psychological warefare (sic),' " the documents stated.
The sailor, in another e-mail, discussed an on-board briefing about protecting the ship from terrorist attacks like the Cole bombing, according to the documents. In that attack, an explosives-laden boat was brought alongside the destroyer while it was anchored in Aden, Yemen, and blown up. The explosion killed 17 sailors, including one from San Diego.
The same floppy disk contained a separate file describing the composition of the Constellation battle group, the ships' planned movements and a drawing of the group's formation for the transit of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage between the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf, court documents said.
Under a heading of "weakness," the computer file stated, "They have nothing to stop a small craft with (rocket-propelled grenade) etc., except their SEALs' Stinger missiles."
It also noted the expected date for the battle group's transit through the strait....
Several defense analysts said the possibility of a spy or terrorist sympathizer within the military is plausible.
"I think it's disturbing, but not surprising," said analyst Jack Spencer with the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based think tank. "Clearly, our military capabilities are a target of al-Qaeda."
Another defense analyst wondered whether the military is able to prevent people from supplying information to terrorists.
"During the Cold War, they were set up to sniff out Communists, but I don't know if they've come up with a program to address (terrorists)," said John Pike, director of the think tank GlobelSecurity.org. "There have been enough of these instances where service members have tried to help the (Islamic) jihad that you wonder how many that we haven't caught."
There will continue to be many that we do not catch as long as the military refuses to acknowledge that any Muslim can be radicalized.
My son is an officer in the USN and tells me that right now the walls are closing in on anyone named Abdul in the Navy. They may think they have infiltrated something, but they are now being used to get to the deeper parts of the org. Yes, mistakes were mad in the past. During the enlistment process, an applicant is required to state religious preference as well as other crucial background information regarding countries they have visited in the past. There was a list of countries that would trigger intensive background checks. When I was a Navy recruiter for 3 years, I never had an applicant who declared Islam as a religion, nor one who had visited a country on the "nations of concern" list.
Of course, this process may have changed. I was a recruiter a few years before slick willie forced the military to adopt his personal favorite "cop-out" when one seeks truth, you know the one - his infamously arrogant and kitman promoting "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
I see NO REASON for NOT RESTRICTING muslim enlistment applicants under the present concerns for National Security. They must 'fess up with the truth under penalty of law regarding submitting fraudulent application. If one says they are a Lutheran, and then is later found to be praying to the eastern moon god (demon)5 times a day, they could be tried for filing a false statement. If they are indeed converted to worshipping the devil while they are in the service, they could be summarily discharged, sans punishment.
Then, at least, our true patriots serving in the Armed Forces would not be placed in harm's way by the enemy within. No grenades lobbed into tents, no searching for runaway Marines wanting to visit "Auntie Al Ice" in Lebanon, no clandestine e-mail communique's with the imam, no recruiting jihadi islam converts from the ranks.
Enough of the heads turned, looking the other way, politically correct, pscho babble seeking to blindly embrace diversity in any form - even to the point of embracing those who would do to us as they have so often done to others (i. e. P. Johnson, D. Pearl, et al). Have we not yet learned that

This one's a no-brainer. You don't need a program to address terrorists, you just need a program to address Muslims. Period. If Muslim-Americans want to serve their country, how about putting together a "Muslim Brigade" like the WWII "Go for Broke" units? Since we are not at war with a "religion", that shouldn't be a problem, right? Or is the military worried about more officers getting fragged?
There have been too many incidents involving Muslim servicemen for this matter to not to be discussed -- out of the hearing of, and away from the pressures of, CAIR, the American Muslim Council, and other Muslim groups or individuals. The murder of two officers (Stone, Seifert)in Kuwait, by a Muslim soldier who was attempting to kill many more; the incident of the likely deserter, Wassef Ali Hassoun, the Egyptian, a certain Muhammad, who served in the U.S. army (where he was employed to "explain Islam" to his fellow soldiers)and turned out to be involved in a terrorsit plt (either the first World Trade Center bombing, or the embassy bombings) and all the cases of which we do not hear because the government is clearly preventing the whole story of Muslim disloyalty from coming out. There are forces in the government that have made the decision not to tell people the truth about Islam -- even to engage in such visible signs of "there is no problem" by bringing over, en masse, 7,000 Meshketian Turks. This is folly.
If you were a soldier, or a sailor, or a Marine, or if you had a close relative who was serving in Iraq, or in Afghanistan (and the enemy need not be Muslim, if Muslims in the American armed services believe that as the most powerful Infidel state America needs to be weakened or defeated, even if the enemy in question is, for example, non-Muslim North Korea) how would you feel about a Muslim in your unit? In your son'sor daughter's unit? Would you feel fine, would you repose in that Muslim soldier that total, unwavering confidence that is essential for a unit's cohesion and morale, or would you find yourself always looking over your shoulder, wondering, reassuring yourself, wondering, reassuring yourself, wondering.
These are life-and-death matters. This is not merely a question of a "rogue" individual, or the occasional "fanatic." It is, rather, the larger problem of a belief-system, an ideology, that teaches its adherents, in every way, to divide the world uncompromisingly between Believer and Infidel,and to strive for the domination of Islam, and the subjugation of all other belief-systems and religions, until Islam covers the globe. Individual Infidels may be generous, open-hearted, welcoming to Muslims. The benefits may be pocketed (as the Iraqis are pocketing American largesse in Iraq), but this changes nothing. Infidels remain Infidels; to the extent that they stand in the way of the conditions that will cause Islam to spread across the globe, they must be defeated, through violence if necessary, through other means if possible.
The ideology of Islam takes account of the "kind Infidel" problem, and steels its followers against the seductive "whisperings of Shaytan" --i.e. Infidels -- by explaining to Believers that it is precisely when Infidels are being kind, that they become most dangerous in winning Muslims away from the faith (one thinks of missionaries); they remain Infidels, and therefore the enemy. There are even rules for how to deal with one's parents, if one has "reverted" to Islam and one's parents have remained Infidels. The rules place loyalty to Islam above loyalty to one's Infidel family. Everyting has been thought out, for what is essentially not so much a belief-system, as a para-military organization, the Army of Islam.
This is not a question, one repeats, of this or that individual capable of treason. It is a much larger question: that of a belief-system, and of those who believe in that system, which of necessity considers all loyalties other than that to Islam as unworthy. The outwardly affable "moderate" whom, non-Muslms assume, is the best fellow in the world and you are prepared to "trust him with your life" -- well, how do you know this? On what basis? Has the American public been schooled in the nature of Islamic apologetics and religiously-sanctioned dissimulation to preserve, and promote, the Faith and the wellbeing of Believers? Do non-Muslims know much about the tenets of Islam -- other than the pieties of Interfaith group meetings? What do they not know that those who have, like Ibn Warraq or Ali Sina, or thousands of other ex-Muslims, might be able to tell them?
And what if someone who, calling himself a Muslim, appears not to have a strong faith, and indeed his or her faith is tepid, yet out of family loyalty (the very loyalty that, were those family members Infidels, Islam would teach a Believer to ignore), out of a combination of filial piety and even embarrassment (those born into Islam, but who in fact are deeply disaffected, may allow themselves to believe that the tenets of their faith are not what they are, that somehow that faith is being maligned by others; one wishes not to inquire too deeply into the truth of the matter, if the matter is the religion of one's family, friends, ancestors -- and how many non-Muslims, in truth, if they had to do the same, possess the mental and emotional stamina for such a complete break? There are people who, quite aware of Islam's problems, nonetheless find themselves hiding those problems, for they take on a defensiveness whenever Islam is under attack by perceived outsiders. The main mode of discussion has always been, as Bernard Lewis notes somewhere, apologetics. And the same kind of apologetics can even be found among non-Muslims who have made Islam or Islam-related studies their professional interest. Someone who has spent 20 years writing about al-Ghazali's theology, or translating classical Arabic poetry, may -- though he knows better -- find himself unable to tolerate the kind of attacks on Islam that, however undiplomatically phrased they may be, in fact tell the truth in what has become a wilderness of lies.
And among those tepid, even the most tepid of Believers -- but those who do not take the final step and announce to themselves, if not to others, that in truth, while born into Islam, and perhaps having a residual nostalgia for certain foods, or the image of a quiet pious old grandfather or grandmother, nonetheless are long last willing to slough off the belief-system that was becoming impossibly hard to defend -- not to defend against Infidels, obnoxiously and raucously attacking the religion, but rather to defend against the charges raised against the belief-system in the courtroom of one's own conscience.
Yet, as we know from recent case-histories (Mohammad Atta, Mike Hawash) even those who appeared not to be religious at all, could have their faith suddenly kindled, and set off on a different path, by any number of things. It could be something political, but it might also be a setback in one's personal life: loss of a job, loss of a girlfriend, a drop in income, a Depression is always a possiblity; Islam is always a way out. It does not take a world crisis to transform someone. Non-Muslims have crises, but their mental makeup is such that they have, when it comes time to blame, many possibilities: their parents (if you are young enough, always desirable), your children (if you are old enough, always desirable), The System, Capitalism, Amerika spelled with its Special K), fate, the stars, your cholesterol level, your serotonin level, whatever you want. Muslims have one name to blame (as Saracen's Head contest entrants know): the INFIDEL. And when that happens, much will depend on whether that tremendously trustworthy Muslim colleague is in the army, or the diplomatic corps, or a city engineer, or an airline pilot, or....
A little realism would be nice. Our lives and civilisation are at stake. A little effort woudl be nice, beginning by studying, on-line if necessary, of Qur'an and hadith. Examine the canonical texts. Look at Islamic websites. Look at the examples of sermons delivered throughout the Muslim world. Study how the Christians, and Jews, and Zoroastrians, and Hindus were conquered by the forces of Islam, and what happened to them after that conquest.
And then look at those faces, those shouts and cries, at the mass rallies in Sadr City or Gaza, in Teheran or Cairo or Karachi or Ramallah or anywhere else where people can gather in the Muslim world? What are you reminded up? A political rally in Trafalgar Square, or on the Mall in Washington? Or are you, rather, reminded of KKK rallies, or Nazis, their eyes glistening with hysteria and hate, at Nuremberg or at a special bonfire? And what conclusions do you draw?
I think the important issue here is the defenses listed:

Number one this is supposedly small craft attacking a Carrier strike group not just one ship which has a lot more defense then just seals. Number two more importantly Stinger Missiles are shoulder launched (MANPAD) heat seeking anti-Aircraft missiles. Not exactly ship defense, and I doubt that any ship that isn’t carrying a Marine expeditionary force would even have stingers. Either someone misspoke or more likely they have no idea what they are talking about either way I am not going to loose sleep over this kind of threat, personally I am more concerned about the Carrier that ran over the Dhow in the Gulf a few weeks back.
I see no reason for not deporting any Muslim that publicly complains about our foreign policy as it pertains to the Middle East. Hatem Bazian at UC Berkeley is a perfect example.

On Tuesday while flipping channels I came across the 700 club which I had never before watched, what stopped me was a woman who mentioned being married to a muslim...she was a southern Christian lady and this muslim man evidently sweet talked her into seeing him telling her that their religious differences wouldnt matter (she was very religious) as their relationship went on he told her nothing would make her happier than if she married him, she said yes and he insisted they be married at the mosque, she said the entire service was in arabic and when they came out after signing what she thought was a marriage certificate she was told her new name was zenah and she was now a muslim...to make a long story short she was beaten and degraded by him and threatened with death if she attempted to leave...she did end up leaving, hiding with friends and aquainteneces and now travels warning women not to get involved with muslims. The interviewer asked her if it was just a few muslims that hated the US and the west and she stated "all of them that I have met" and it was preached in their mosque.
She stated ...and this is the part more people should hear (wish I could remember her name)...her husband told her that it was the GOAL OF MUSLIMS TO HAVE ISLAMIC LAW GOVERN THE EARTH AND THEY WOULD NOT STOP UNTIL THIS HAPPENS...that was the very first time I have actually heard that out loud on TV..he told her if they could not take the US by force they would take it by marriage, public office, cries of religious persecution and infiltrating high ranking security positions...looks like he wasn't kidding...I am going to try to find out her name, her interview was chilling and she says she still fears for her life but feels this message needs to get out.

I had a friend on board the USS Abraham Lincoln who is a Muslim. We would talk about things and he was interviewed by news organizations when we went to Iraq for the war. When asked if how he felt about attacking other muslims he said that he was fighting Iraq for his country the USA. Not that he was waging war on Islam.
Now I don't know if he was involved in anything like those other guys who've been caught in the military doing things like blowing up their commanders or telling the enemy secrets, so I'd like to think he isn't a part of it.
He was kicked out of the Navy for doing drugs. He drank alcohol and broke his law many times over.
That said even though I think of him as a friend, if he took up the banner of Jihad, I would kill him myself.

I beg your pardon, but it began with the Battle of Tours in 732 anno domini, in which the muslim hoarde was slaughtered by Charles Martel, the mass execution of saracens by Richard the Lionheart in 1191, followed by the reconquista in 1492, and let's not forget the charge of the winged Polish Hussars in Vienna in 1683 when King Jan Sobieski began our chase of the caliph all the way back to Constantinople where in 1924 the caliphate itself was flushed down the toilet of failed ideologies.
There are of course many more examples of muslim jihadists getting crushed like roaches by Western armies but there are too many to remember them all. So the question of second time around, and extending to third, fourth, etc., time around, has already been answered with a resounding, no it was not any different.
After having read another one of Hugh's important, insightful posts...this time on how Islamic customs, practices, psychology, ways of thought relate to loyalty, service and vocation...most especially service for a nonMuslim state...I had a thought.
I am aware of Jessica Stern's work on the psychology and motivation of religious 'terrorists' or 'extremists', Jihadists, in other words...but her conclusion (at least as I understand it) that humiliation is the most 'common variable' does not not come close to striking the 'root cause': there is a more fundamental study to be done explaining why humiliation is so bad for Jihadists (or how about just 'Muslims'. Humiliate a Christian and you might get...who knows...humiliate a Muslim and if you do not 'watch your back'...for some time, you are a fool), and I wonder if anyone knows anything about it.
Has anyone done any studies on the 'psychological attitudes, sensibilities' of Muslim believers as these psychological states relate to religious belief and traditions? Take the kids in the Madrassas, for instance. Has anyone studied not only what they believe but emotions, behavioral patterns as they relate to their education? I am not a social scientist as folks can tell (not stating this the right way), but the general idea would be empirical studies which try to explain the relationships between Islamic religious belief and practices and emotions, beliefs, and patterns of behavior.
Hugh's arguments and commentary, for me at least, indicate that Stern's studies are shallow. We need to dig deeper to understand the groundwork of the social and psychological forces that mould the murderers that threaten the lives of everyone of us everytime we step on a plane, a train, a bus...For Stern: you say 'humiliation' is important? why do they feel humiliated? Hugh can explain that to us with careful, well grounded, cogent, brilliance...but I wonder if there are social scientists out there who have actually tried to tackle the question empirically...or who would be willing to. Here's a simple analysis. These people are brainwashed from birth that muslims are superior and everyone else is inferior. However when confronted with the different reality of the world, they have a problem dealing with this. If they accept the truth that they are not superior, they then have to face the reality that they have been lied to by their parents, teachers and all those before them.
So in order do deal with the humiliation they feel deep inside about the truth, they turn this into rage against the infidel. Its the same reason why muslims beat their wives. They are extremely insecure people, and if their wife does something to make them feel threatened they beat them. Then they blame their wives for the behavior that caused them to beat them. In other words, its their wives fault for making them feel like they do. Apparently they are not taught to believe they have any faults or to accept that they have any weaknesses. Consequently when any weakness is exposed they turn their frustration on the one who exposed their weakness, rather than on trying to improve themselves. The USA makes them feel inferior because we have a bigger, stronger and wealthier country than theirs, this causes them endless humiliation. Thats why they want to either destroy it, or take it over. Its interesting how they cry every time there is a muslim arrested at a mosque, however in muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, you cant even open church or pray at one.
These are very sick people. You only have to read the comments by people like reza and read the accounts of women who are married to muslim men to realize this.

I recall reading about some of the psyops that were used to defeat the enemy in the recent Iraq war.One of the the techniques the soldiers used was to broadcast from time to time over loudspeakers "Iraqis are impotent". The Iraqi soldiers would invariably come running out of hiding in a rage where they'd be promptly gunned down by US forces.The US soldiers knew that Arab male vanity would not allow them to leave such an insult unanswered even if it ment getting killed.

I have often wondered how one takes an oath of loyalty upon entering American Military service anyway, knowing full well that such an oath completely contradicts the basic tenets of one's beliefs?

Regarding your comment about muslims taking over a military vessel or something like that, I too fear that a handful of muslims could indeed band together within a US Destroyer or worse a nuclear submarine and take the crew hostage or kill them all and take over the entire vessel which, by the way, is loaded with the highest technology weapons found anywhere in the world.
Hope the time doesn't ever come when we have to blow one of our own ships out of the water just to eliminate a handful of mutineers.

I am aware of Jessica Stern's work on the psychology and motivation of religious 'terrorists' or 'extremists', Jihadists, in other words...but her conclusion (at least as I understand it) that humiliation is the most 'common variable' does not not come close to striking the 'root cause': there is a more fundamental study to be done explaining why humiliation is so bad for Jihadists (or how about just 'Muslims'. Humiliate a Christian and you might get...who knows...humiliate a Muslim and if you do not 'watch your back'...for some time, you are a fool),
We need to study Islam and the psychology and general belief system of 'Muslims'...not 'terrorists' or 'religious extremists'...
