The French interior minister has joined Muslim leaders at the main mosque in Paris to pray for the release of two French journalists abducted in Iraq.Worshippers applauded as Dominique de Villepin spoke of the unity of French Muslims and non-Muslims.
French Muslim leader Dalil Boubakeur described the men as "our countrymen" and urged the kidnappers to free them.
The kidnappers have demanded that France repeal a ban on Islamic headscarves in French state schools.
The law introducing the ban is due to come into effect on Thursday. The government has refused to withdraw it.
The BBC's Angus Roxburgh, in Paris, describes Mr de Villepin's visit to the mosque as highly symbolic.
He says French Muslims attended to demonstrate their solidarity and their Frenchness - and to distance themselves from the Iraqi kidnappers.
Meanwhile, an influential Sunni Muslim organisation in Iraq, the Committee of Ulema, said it had failed to make contact with the kidnappers and feared the journalists might be killed.
A group calling itself The Islamic Army in Iraq says it is holding the two men - Christian Chesnot of Radio France Internationale and Georges Malbrunot of Paris daily newspaper Le Figaro.

For once I think it's rather encouraging that French Muslims are not automatically taking the side of their fellow Muslims. Some Imams who are opposed to the headscarf ban are now saying that the French law should be obeyed and that this kidnapping is wrong.
Could all be Taqiyya of course. Time will tell. I'm no fan of the French, but I really hope these guys get out safely.

How many of their revisionist intellectual historians diverted their energies from the Holocaust to protray islam's history as one of peace and understanding between Judeo-christianity and Islam?

And how the persecuted ,emigrated,Maronites of lebanon must have agonised as no one wanted to listen to their woes at the hand of the Jihadists of Syria and the PLO.
And still the battle for the complete domination of the Middle east goes on with Israel the last man standing against the onslaught of the mohammedans.
An immense area of the world which was once totally judeo christian has been accepted as Islamic without question by the west and the last tiny remaining part must follow suit !!

There is a glimmer of hope that the French could raise their swords in protection of "what is French." Does that mean that they reject jihad and Islam? Only if they can't convince the Muslims residing in France to create a French brand of Islam. It's not likely that this will happen as Islam seeks to create a world empire that swallows up and annihilates competing cultures.
However, as the French and other Europeans, are being bred out of existence, their attempts to put brakes on Islamization may be an exercise in futility.
The only way the French leaders could have prayed IN a mosque is by converting first to Islam.
This is a publicity stunt.
It will be interesting to see what happens if/when the islamic terrorists "off" (pun intended) their French hostages. Will France sack up and join the war against islamic terrorists? Or will they wave the white flag, like " a bunch of cheese-eatin' surrender monkeys"?
was not the french revolution atheistic? did not napoleon crush the temporal power of the vatican and take the pope into captivity in 1798? is not france a hotbed for the origination of atheistic philosophies? isn't this the same dominique de villepin who writes poetry about the silly americans and how we cannot compete with the sophisticated philosophies of intellectually superior frenchies? where does his philosophy lead him now? to allah? quite a journey you are taking, france. perhaps someday, mr. de villepin, you will see what the american hillbillies saw the whole time -- you're not wearing any clothes.
