Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni, who was taken captive on 24 August, is reported to have been executed by his captors.In a video tape received by Aljazeera, the purported Iraqi group - identifying itself as the Islamic Army in Iraq - said Baldoni had been executed because their demands had not been met.
"The group calling itself the Islamic Army in Iraq said they executed the Italian journalist Enzo Baldoni because Italy did not respond to their demand to withdraw troops from Iraq within 48 hours," Aljazeera reported.
Aljazeera decided not to broadcast the grisly footage.
Baldoni, 56, disappeared last week on the road to Najaf, the scene of fierce fighting between US troops and the al-Mahdi Army of Shia leader Muqtada al-Sadr.

The shock for Italians was all the greater because of the general belief the kidnappers would react favourably to the televised pleas of his son and daughter, and the fact that he was in Iraq partly on assignment for a bitter left-leaning critic of the government, the weekly Il Diario.
"Enzo Baldoni was not a soldier, not a spy, nor a 'hawk' supporting the war in Iraq, and neither was he there to defend the interests of this or that big oil company. But he was an Italian, and as such that was enough for the Islamic terrorist killers to decree his killing," the daily said.

Dase, I posted my comment before I read my latest email. It is true that the police are no longer going to charge him. Is that what you meant?
I happened to listen to a CBC radio interview yesterday afternoon about the court challenge being mounted with respect to Sharia Law in Canada.
Both sides were represented in a panel discussion.
Robert Galati (sp), a Toronto Lawyer was arguing, quite intelligently that the implementation of Sharia was improper and constitutionally offense not only to Canadians but to Muslims as well.
Essentially, he took the position that a separate Sharia Law prevented native born Muslim individuals from sharing in the freedoms we in the West have come to know and love. He argued that the laws of the land dealt with issues of family matters and that everyone was required to abide by these rules.
Galati was smart enough not to get into an emotional debate about the issue and handled his discussion with honour and grace. His position was clear, concise and compelling.
His opponent, some moron from one of the Muslim support groups on the other hand, was the opposite. His emotional plea that the there should be equal rights for the Muslim religion was simply too stooooopid for words.
His entire argument centered on the way in which secular society discriminated against the poor Muslims who only wanted to be governed by the law of their cult …sorry... faith.
When it became apparent that he could not win the argument on an intellectual basis, he began a long rant, refused to listen and became quite belligerent.
I guess he felt if logic wouldn’t work he could win by behaving erratically and irrationally.

Interesting thing to me about the application to sanction/recognize Sharia "courts" in Canada, the law under which this application was made is the same law, introduced in the early 1990s, that provided for Jews who wished their civil lit issues to be arbitrated by rabbis. I don't recall any concerns being raised about the application of Talmud and I am unaware of any complaints about any opinions rendered by any Beit Dins (at least I think that's what they are called -- I am a secular Jew). Some of the concerns, which are being fairly raised now about Sharia, could also be asked about rabbinical courts -- are they unfair to women ("orthodox" Judiasm does treat women as second class coreligionists and they too are subject to coersion to submit).
Don't get me wrong. I am concerned about the potential for abuse here. Just asking/noting.
And by the way, I think the lawyer mentioned above -- I know of a Rocco Galati -- if they are one and the same -- is an immigration lawyer who has defended some pretty odious characters and withdrew from a case not long ago, alluding to threats against his life.

My apologies, the name is indeed Rocco Galati, a typo on my part.
The argument that was being made on the CBC by our Muslim “friend” was not that Sharia law would apply to civil litigation matters but to all interaction among Muslims including specifically family matters. In short, he wanted Sharia to supersede the laws of the land in that regard under the guise of freedom of religion.
I have no faith in anything to do with Islam and firmly believe that Sharia law has no place in North America. I believe that the cult of Islam is not a religion and should be recognized as nothing less than that.
That notwithstanding, the Jews have always believed in the rule of law, Islam only believes in the rule of Allah.
And Allah is on mean son of a bitch!!

The press coverage of the murdered Italian demonstrates that the Europeans still don't get it. They continue to fail to see the connection between the exhortation to kill infidels in the Da'wa call to spread Islam throughout the world.
Interesting how al-Jazeera has gone squeamish all of a sudden...
