The retrial of Mounir el Motassadeq takes an unexpected turn as the US releases testimony from an al Qaeda captive who says the suspect knew nothing of the attack plans. Only this time, it could help suspect Motassadeq rather than the prosecution.
According to the summary read out in the court room by presiding judge Ernst-Rainer Schudt, Motassadeq -- who is on trial for aiding the Hamburg-based Sept. 11 suicide pilots Mohammed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi and Ziad Jarrah -- had no idea of the terrorist plot.
A blow for prosecutors?
"We have to think about the consequences of this," Schudt said.
After the surprising development on Wednesday, Motassadeq's defense attorneys -- who only one day earlier claimed any testimony from Binalshibh or Mohammed would be unreliable because they had likely been tortured or forced into giving testimony by US intelligence agents --seemed pleased with the apparently exculpatory evidence.
"I think it's going to result in an acquittal," said attorney Josef Grässle-Münscher.

They figured out that the University president was Jewish, and boy did they love that! More proof of the Zionist Conspiracy.
They protested hearings, they protested outside his jail cell, they carried banners and marched back and forth. They made bumper stickers, they held rallies.
Al-Aryan himself went on a "hunger strike" and proclaimed that he was a "prophet" who was being "martyred."
When he was arrested, his sextoy said that their family was "massacred" by the arrresting authorities.
National organizations of academics and pundits swooped down upon USF after they fired him, promising harsh censoring and angry rebukes if he wasn't reinstated at once, with full recompense for lost wages.
"Oh, the humanity" the hippies and a few teachers cried. Dozens of websites and school clubs (with always the same 50 or so Muslim kids and their pet hippies) sprung up, offering phony collegiate activities to support the jihad. Stuff like "Muslim Awareness Month" and "Palestinian Awareness Week."
I laughed through it all, because I knew that the FBI had a 50-count indictment against Al-Aryan, and that the indictments were based on taped phone conversations, and the they have been "fingerprinting" voices for decades. I used to laugh at my misguided fellow liberals and academics, and say "If just ONE charge sticks, he's going away for life."
I did feel bad for his poor, brainwashed children. But I happened to meet the youngest one (on campus at a dawah booth) and she told me that all of the Al Aryan kids are college educated, so they should be alright (at least financially.)
Then one day a bunch of prosecutorial evidence was accidentally shredded.... WTF? They only keep one single copy? Nothing is archived onto discs?
I worked for a mechanical engineer that archived everything he did, in case someone tried to come back with lawsuit ten years later... we're talking about air conditioning and ventilation here. But the prosecutors of terrorists don't digitally archive?
Furthermore, can't the FBI use tape and piece the shreds back together? It is possible. Tedious, yes. But definitely do-able.
And now this. Hello to all. I see we've been at it again. I have much respect for all of you. I just wanted to again point out that we're in this thing together. Whether or not we agree with each other on the rest of politics, we all agree that Islamism has to be removed.
Left, right, conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, Independent........It doesn't matter anymore. We've made mistakes on both sides of the aisle for a long time. The biggest mistake was letting all of them in here in the first place.

I may be a little to late on this thread for you to read this Gary but I think I see where Catherine is comming from. She is as totally far-right as you can possibly get, she has had swipes in me at the past because guns are banned in Britain (and as I've told her many times, the illegal gun-gathering process is much easier and cheaper).
She doesn't mean anything by it, she's just concerned, as she should be, that if muslims start up some kind of mass uprising on our own turf, the west will not be prepared , and she just wants everyone just as geared up for battle as she is.
