From the viewpoint of Islam, terrorism, which is never defined as such, but may be considered as part of "qital" or combat (mentioned 17 times in the Qur'an), is simply one of the instruments of Jihad. So is the use of economic power (boycotts, bribery). So is propaganda (Da'wa or the Call to Islam, and denials at the same time to the wider world of what Islam really teaches). So is the latest and most significant weapon, demographic conquest (where even the innocent cabdriver from Quetta, moving to London or New York, is by his mere presence swelling Muslim power, political and otherwise, and making it that much more difficult for unwary non-Muslims ever to see things clearly -- without a large Muslim population in the United Kingdom, the craven behavior of the British Council (see the intolerable remarks of "Rod Pryde, Assistant Director-
General" in a public statement issued August 12, 2004, where he notes that an employee, Harry Cummins, will be "investigated" and assures Muslims that "the articles by Will Cummmins are the antithesis of everything that we stand for and have worked to achieve over 70 years. We are determined to get to the bottom of this matter."
Now Cummins has been threatened and silenced. And who else, about whom we do not hear?

No, from the viewpoint of the Infidels, it scarcely matters if they succumb, slowly or rapidly, to Muslim demands, which only make things worse and worse, through the threat of terrorism or through the other instruments of Jihad.

From the viewpoint of the Infidels, though not of Zia ul-Haq's son, there is no difference between a particular instrument of Jihad, and the Jihad itself. The goals of Tariq Ramadan, the soft and sinister promoter of Da'wa which, he allows himself to believe (because he vastly prefers living in the West, where he was born and raised -- he tried Egypt and longed for the very West he hopes to transform -- and where he devoutly hopes all of us, the Infidels lost and wandering like lonely Leibnizian monads in the universe, will find our solace in the warm and very tight embrace of the umma of Islam.

That the Western world leaves a great deal to be desired is clear to any idiot in that Western world. That Islam is not a solution, even a Total Solution, to the conditions of Western angst, anomie, and so on (here ou may choose at least two other apt words beginning with "a" if you feel like it), because of its refusal to permit free will (once in, you are in for life, unless you are very brave), and Islam itself is all-encompassing, and ideally all-regulating, offering a Total Explanation and Regulation and Guide to the Universe, which is precisely which makes it so mind-constraining, so life-limiting, and if one adds in its essential endless and profound hostility for all non-Muslims, should also be clear to any idiot.

But it is not. Or not yet. For the Western world has by and large chosen to deny what is staring it in the face. Were it now 1950, or even 1960, and there was a smaller Muslim presence within the Dar al-Harb, there would be far greater realism. If the university departments supposedly "teaching about Islam" had not, by and large, been captured by apologists for Islam, who either deny its essential teachings outright, or slyly, in every way, convince the innocent students that things are really not as the facts seem to suggest, if even the so-called "reformers" were in fact simply, in many cases, the slyest and most dangerous of apologists, because they prevent us from recognizing that the canonical texts of Islam are simply not to be emended or changed, and that with its doctrines remaining immutable, it is only the practice of Islam, and the power of its adherents, that can be constrained.

That a bit of realism may be dawning, that the naive project of creating a "Light-Unto-the-Muslim-Nations" in Iraq can be seen as utter folly. Paul Wolfowitz, incidentally, is not a hard-headed realist. He was taken to task some months ago, quite acutely, by Richard Pipes (in an interview in The Boston Sunday Globe). Pipes, who served on Team B with Wolfowitz (another estimate of Soviet arms) noted that Wolfowitz is a "brilliant arms analyst" but knows nothing of the influence of history and culture on people (which is to say, in the case at hand, Islam).

When one makes judgments about the Middle East, there are problems when one listens not to the enemy (CAIR, Saudi diplomats, all Arab governments) but even to those who are born into Islam and who, in many ways, are reasonable, plausible, clearly horrrified by what goes on in the Arab and Muslim world. Fouad Ajami is, compared to those Arabs he often debates, practically Winston Churchill. Wolfowitz's companion, Shaha Ali Riza (described in the Aug. 1 20043 Sunday Telegraph, somewhat mysteriously, as "an Arab woman who is an expert in the process of democracy." (Hmmm. What makes one an "expert in the process of democracy"? Anyone have any ideas?), no doubt cannot stand the treatment of women in Islamic societies. And no doubt, like Ajami and Kanan Makiya (who is much more interested in the fate of Iraq, and quite defensive about Islam when it is attcked), not one of these people is in the brave line of Ibn Warraq. They either do not see, or cannot allow themselves to see, that the real problem of the Muslim world is -- mirabile dictu -- Islam itself. They simply can't.

And that is where Wolfowitz went astray. Far from being "hard-headed" he is a passionate idealist (in affairs of state, when you need to be as sober and cool and cunning as possible, not a good idea). In the Jihad against Israel, for example, he fails to understand that there is NO solution (much less that idiotic "two-state solution"), given the Muslim refusal to countenance an Infidel sovereignty of any size in the midst of dar al-Islam, and that the only modus vivendi, not "solution," is for Israel not only to remain overwhelmingly more powerful, but OBVIOUSLY so, and that means no further withdraawals from anywhere, whatever the foolish Israelis, including a Sharon suffering from stubbornness and possibly senile dementia, may think: Darura, necessity, needs to be invoked by those Arab leaders who may not wish to go to war, as their only legitimate reason for not doing so.

Is it realy so difficult for Western politicians and journalists, before they make their self-assured pronouncements about Islam, and plan or fail to plan accordingly, to actually study what people actually learn from an early age, what they hear in the khutbas (sermons), what the press and television and absolutely everyone around them fills their minds with -- unless they happen to be the kind of rural Muslims, Muslims almost in name only, who still remain (but not for much longer) out of the range of audiocassettes, videocassettes, and of course, that cross between TASS and Der Stuermer, the "news" channel known as Al-Jazeera.

How about a two-week time-out, when everyone decides to study a bit? You know, just like older people do at Elderhostel, or younger ones do at those greatly-overpriced, and usually very-badly taught courses at university summer schools where one learns so little, but one's parents can express their delight in how Josh or Megan has been studying (drama, creative writing, film making, Akkadian) this summer at (Harvard, Yale, Oxford, Cambridge).

Tony Blair might do so right now. Having decided to spent Ferragosto with Berlusconi at one of the latter's modest retreats (Berlusconi wearing a bandanna and looking like a harmless Disney pirate) instead of going out to buy ceramiche, why not sit and study the texts of Islam, the better to understand the Jihad, and the need, a tous azimuths, for a counter-Jihad.

Terrorism is the act of violence aimed at creating terror within the masses, jihad is the justification for these actions.Thats the only difference I can see.

Zia's Boy should try telling this to all the maimed and slaughtered[often Muslim relatives to suspected informers] victims of Jihad in Kashmir. Some of the worst atrocities have happened to women who have been gang raped before
having their ears and noses hacked off : sometimes eyes gouged out for the crime of belonging to a family who weren't enthusiastic enough about Jihad. These poor innocents, often hardly more than children [ their Prophet liked 'em young too] are soft targets for these despicable torturing, murdering thugs.

I think what he means to be saying is this. If you commit random acts of violence against innocent people you are a terrorist. However if you simulatenously shout "allah akbar" while doing it, then its jihad, god's work.

Thats what seperates the two, yelling "allah akbar" makes it holy....apparently.

Catholic teaching, it’s hierarchic structure and its well thought and well illustrated theology is showing Islam that by comparison Islam is destined to the moral dustbin having no leadership, (no Pontiff) and has paid a fools ransom in setting up Mosques all over Europe to promote one brand of Islam, this has realized Mohamed’s greatest fear; that like the Jews, Islam will separate into multiple sects and all but one be destined for HELL, gone is the vestige of credibility, Islam is Peace! Islam is like the seed planted in the rocky ground; having no depth of earth it began to sprout too early; bolting it quickly dominated the light needed for more secure and stable plants, plants who were well watered and well established, having a depth of earth equal to the growth above ground. Alas the Islam plant had no depth of earth and it only managed to hold onto the earth it had because there was a surplus of calm water feeding into it, but when the season changed everyone who saw the plant said “it is out of place in the garden; we must speak to the gardener and have it removed” the next day a storm hit the garden and the force of the water uprooted the Islam plant washing into the thorny hedge at the back of the garden, then the sun came and scorched the Islam plant and it withered and died, it would have been a mulch for the plants in the vicinity but the gardener saw it and he decided that this plant was best burned in case any other seeds germinated from the mulching.

If mulsusms are peaceful why would they want to kill Christians?
