ANKARA (AFP) - Facing a popular outcry at home and stern warnings from Europe, the Turkish government discreetly stepped back from a plan to introduce a motion into a crucial penal reform bill to make adultery a crime punishable by prison.The announcement came in a roundabout way, by implication, and from an unexpected source.
After a surprise 20-minute meeting, opposition leader Deniz Baykal, flanked by two top government ministers, told expectant reporters: "No motion that does not bear the signatures of both parties will be submitted to the assembly."
Baykal's social-democratic Republican People's Party (CHP) had always opposed the adultery clause.
Although none of the men even mentioned adultery, it meant the plan by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) had died a quiet death.
This will be revisited after they get into the EU.

the west could use a few lessons from islam:
adultery is wrong resulting in many divorces and causes families and children untold sufferings.
the west has lost its moral foundation based on the bible:
the moslems see the west as weak and ripe for takeover.
And they'll bring it in, as soon as they get into the EU.
That was some splendidly inept politicking by the Turks, proposing laws such as this while at the same time pressing for accession to the EU. Maybe we can convince the Turkish government that bringing back amputation for thieves for would really impress the Brussels Comintern.
So 'pious' Erdogan backed down at the thought of being shut out of EU Euro Millions. Islam is such a convenient religion : expect the bugger to reintroduce this law and full Sharia once Turkey
gets entry.

i am against adultery because i am a christian and i know the true God: the God of Israel and He says in the bible that adultery is a serious SIN.
if you think adultery is a legitimate expression of freedom then you are part of the problem that the west faces in its confilict with islam.
Arabs & related tribes must be given credit, before the Koran, they were masters at developing mathematics, science, astronomy, medicine, & commerce. The Egyptian Pyramids speak for themselves. Greeks were also masters. Of course, today, many secular Arabs & other tribes also excel in these related professions. The history is certainly there, but ever since 7th Century A.D., Islam & the Koran has created this problematic agenda, Muslims are trying to spread their lock-down ideology.

I'm with Forrest--and with Turkey's instincts on this one. The command against adultery isn't medieval, it's as eternal as the God who gave it and engraved it on the human heart. I suppose that if you came home one evening and found you wife in bed naked with another man (or even a woman, for that matter), you'd just shrug your enlightened shoulders and say, "C'est la vie" and feel no great pain or hurt? As we'd say in this largely non-Christian and non-Muslim quarter of the world, hu shuo ba dao (胡說八道)--fat chance.
"Enlightened" Europe's cynical jadedness over adultery (oh, so civilized!)and every other sexual sin may be one reason it can't get up the juices to sire enough of the next generation.

I´m a catholic christian and I am against the adultery but it´s only a personal decision, we don´t have to put it in a penal code the adultery, I´m a christian and I am against the confessional states, for this reason I´m against this islamic law.
I find it hard to get worked up about this as well. In how many states in the USA is adultery illegal? What about in, say, 1950? Was that because the states were implementing Shari'a? Making adultery illegal has been a common thing for thousands of years, it's hardly a hallmark of Shari'a.
Heck, you can make a strong secular, libertarian argument for criminalizing adultery (because it's breach of contract).
So you think that people should go to jail for sleeping with someone other than their spouse? Why are you so obsessed with other people's sex lives?

Out of all the islamic countries in the world I respect Turkey the most and think all the others could learn a valuable lesson from it, but of course, they friggin' hate the turks.
