Al-Jazeera: Two Italian Hostages Freed in Iraq

Good news from AP:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two Italian and two Iraqi aid workers kidnapped this month in Iraq were freed Tuesday after three weeks in captivity, Italy's prime minister said.

Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi told Parliament that the four were handed over to the Red Cross in Iraq. He said the Italians were expected to return in Italy soon, possibly Tuesday evening.

"Finally a moment of joy," Berlusconi said. "The two girls are well and will be able to return to their loved ones tonight."

Berlusconi went before Parliament to give details of the release, thanking the intelligence agencies of neighboring countries, including Jordan, whose king was in Rome Tuesday.

Berlusconi's comments were reported just after the Arab television network Al-Jazeera announced that the Italians, Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, had been freed. A Muslim leader from Italy met with a local Muslim association earlier Tuesday in Baghdad to press for their release, though it was not immediately known if there was a connection.

PS
Lets not forget saddams daughters are in Jordan?

Great news for their families and the Italian people....but I am sure that those young ladies went through horrors that we couldnt even imagine...I also wonder what was secretly promised in order to gain their release, I cant believe they would just be released, wouldnt this make the kidnappers look like schmucks to their terrorist friends and werent they afraid of losing 'credibility' before...something had to be promised to them

As long as the Italian troops are still there,
I doubt the terrorists have been catered to.
(If they're gone in a month....that's no good)
They did free some journalists some time ago. The CNN guy was freed in Palestine. Sometimes noncombatants have a chance. I think there are degrees of monstrousness among terrorists.

Jordan's kings have always had too many threats to make one guarantee worthwhile. Reading a book on King Hussein now....by the way, his cousin was a King of Iraq. (Not that that has anything to do with giving asylum to Saddam's family)

I shudder to think about what those women had endure at the hands of those thugs. No doubt they were raped, tortured, and marked for life.

I hope they talk about what happened and it gets some good coverage. The Italian people should be madder than hell.

Islamic terrorists like this will be the end of Islam. The free world is going to get hip to this sooner or later. Reform or disappear.

The amount of fear building up in the everyday "peaceful" Muslim must be getting to be terrific, if they are thinking at all. How could it not be. I would be a nervous wreak looking over my shoulder constently.

Regards,

fg

I doubt they were released because of their captors benevolent feelings.
What was the price?
I hope we hear from them about their experience.

Catherine, aren't you the one who is always pointing out natural disasters affecting Muslim countries.

Four ( or is it five now?) hurricanes in one month in Florida...looks like God has it out for you.

A million dollar ransom was paid.

Whoever had them, they must not have been connected to Zarqawi.

There was also an Iranian diplomat that had been held for 2 months released, 1 of the Egyptian truck drivers kidnapped last week.

Remember where those ubl toys came from was just taken out by a storm in N.C.

OT, but...

Are there any soldiers in Afghanistan or Iraq (other than the ones we have heard from already), who are reading here?

Can we get you guys to comment on the situation in your respective areas?

The other night Global network (Canada) gave a Canadian reporter a nice, long segment to talk about how all the Iraqis he knew of, were working in collaboration with the terrorists infiltrating Iraq- or at least paying them 'protection' money.

And the Iraqis he is talking about?

He claims they are the very police and military we are training.

...................

An excerpt from the NY Times article:

"More than 140 foreigners have been kidnapped in Iraq since a mass uprising in April. Most have been freed, often after the captors' demands were met. Most of the kidnappings have been carried out for financial gain, with the bandits often selling the victims to the captives' companies or to jihadist groups."

I don't like it; it funds criminals and/or enemies but it's not troops or prisoners.

This is great news! However, there is heaps left unexplained as to who was actually holding the girls and why they were abducted in the first place?? Why did Al Jazeera get news first and according to a report,Italian women were released wearing'black veils'....

Iraq Marine: Troops 'Terrified' of a Kerry Presidency
U.S. troops on the ground in Iraq are "terrified" at the prospect that Americans back home might elect John Kerry president, a Marine and Iraq veteran who is on his way back to the front lines said Monday.

Asked how Kerry's election would affect troop morale in the combat zone, Lance Cpl. Lawrence Romack told KWEL Midland, Texas, radio host Craig Anderson, "It would destroy it." "We're pretty terrified of a John Kerry presidency," added Romack, who served with the 1st Marine Tank Battalion in Iraq.
The Iraq war vet said he fears that most of the news coverage is being skewed to make the mission look like a failure in order to give the Kerry campaign a boost.
"What they're trying to do is get Kerry into the White House, because they know he doesn't want us to stay [in Iraq]," he told Anderson.
Asked if Americans back home were getting an accurate picture of what's happening in the war, the Marine corporal said: "No, they're not. It's not even close. All the press wants to report is casualty counts. They don't want to report the progress we're making over there."
Romack noted that in the southern part of the country, Iraqis welcomed U.S. troops when they set up an immunization programs for children, opened schools and began distributing food.
"Almost immediately people were lining up to get their kids shots," he told Anderson.
Contrary to reports that the general population was too afraid to help ferret out insurgents, Romack said, "We had Iraqis pointing out former Baath Party members for us to arrest."
When the KWEL host opened up the phone lines, a member of the 82nd Airborne who had returned from Iraq in March was first on the line.
He agreed with Cpl. Romack that media reports coming out of Iraq were often inaccurate – and sometimes even dangerous.
"The news media – sometimes I felt like I had as much to fear from them as I did the Iraqis," he complained.

State needs to let Iraq tries saddam because he was found in a spider hole?

It's nice that they were freed but the real issue is that they shouldn't have been abducted
in the first place, when non-Muslims try to build a bridge to the Muslim world some Muslims get angry that atonement is near and they'll have no one to hate to justify Jihad.

If Muslims insist that the Islamists have nothing to do with Islam, then Islam also has nothing to do with Muslims.Muslims can't use the figure of 1.2 Billion worldwide to boast their faith and then deny any action of them that appear un-Islamic in their eyes.

Thank God they're alright!!!

Doesn't everyone think it's funny how all of a sudden we're seeing so much effort to show the "compassionate nature" of muslims in the public eye just lately???

Hmmm!!!Could that be anything to do with the fact that muslims have done such a great job of showing the world what a babaric bunch of spineless neanderthals they all are, they're trying now to "brighten up Islams Image" or "repair the damage"???

Thats all it is in my view, they don't give a flying fig about hostages, or the kids in Beslan, all they care about is the dirty face of islam getting even dirtier.
