U.S. intelligence agencies concluded recently that al Qaeda — fearing its credibility is on the line — is moving ahead with plans for a major, "spectacular" attack, despite disruptions of some operations by recent arrests in Britain and Pakistan.Officials said recent intelligence assessments of the group, which is blamed for the September 11 attacks, state that an attack is coming and that the danger will remain high until the Nov. 2 elections and last until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.
"They [al Qaeda] think their credibility is on the line because there hasn't been a major attack since 9/11," said one official familiar with intelligence reports on the group.
A second official said: "There isn't reason to believe that the recent arrests have disrupted their plans."
Authorities in Pakistan and Britain recently arrested key al Qaeda leaders, but the group uses tight "compartmentation" of its operations. The process, used by intelligence services, keeps information about operations within small "cells" of terrorists to protect secrecy.
Thus, details of the possible attack remain murky, but analysts say it is planned to be bigger and deadlier than the September 11 attacks, which killed 3,000 people.
Potential targets include the White House, Pentagon, U.S. Capitol and congressional buildings, as well as landmarks and business centers in New York, the officials said. The officials said that there is no specific information about targets.

During the Cold War, the Soviet generals and Party hierarchy understood perfectly that if they were to use certain kinds of weapons, engage in certain kinds of attacks, thousands of American missiles rain down on the Soviet Union. But the Arabs have never had to face real punishment. The Israelis could not do it in 1948; in 1967 they voluntarily halted their advance, without inflicting real damage (indeed, they begged King Hussein not to enter the war). In 1973, Kissinger prevented the Israelis under Sharon (much better as a general than as a colossally innocent geostrategist)from destroying the Egyptian Third Army. Real destruction is something they do not understand, and have never faced. They think that they can indefinitely encourage, and support, activities such as Al Qaeda.
But if it were to be known that the American forces were considering certain options, and that these included, for example, the destruction of, say, large parts of Riyadh or Jiddah, or demonstration bombings in the U.A.E. or elsewhere, what exactly could the Saudis or U.A.E. do? Stop selling oil on the world market? What? And what is it, exactly, that would do most damage, in the eyes of Al Qaeda, to the furtherance of its own aims? In the very first tape of Bin Laden, taken after the 9/11 attacks, he asks specifically what is happening to the conversion of Infidels, and is well-pleased to have learned that in Holland, as he says, "hundreds of people have "reverted" to Islam in the weeks just following the attacks."
Well, surely that offers some guide. What if it were made known that mosques everywhere would be shut down permanently, all over the Western world, were there to be further major attacks? What if, further, there were noises made about attacking major cities, including those in Saudi Arabia where so much oil money has been plowed into palaces for the princes? What if there were noises made about cutting off the routes for the hajj into and out of Mecca, without touching Mecca itself? These are only some of the possibilities. Without any discussion of what would follow upon an attack, Al Qaeda and related groups are left thinking that it will be mixture as before, the equivalent of the world-weary "round up the usual suspects." But this is not a time for the world-weary Claude Rains in Casablanca, nor for a funny Italian "I soliti ignoti." This is quite different.

Navy Launches Second Kerry Medal Probe
The U.S. Navy has launched a new probe into Sen. John Kerry's Silver Star citation, after the Navy Secretary whose signature appears on the document said he never signed the award.
"It is a total mystery to me," former Navy Secretary John Lehman told the Chicago Sun-Times in August. "I never saw it. I never signed it. I never approved it. And the additional language it contains was not written by me," he complained.
The Lehman document is the last of three versions of Kerry Silver Star citation that have been posted to Kerry's campaign website.

Kerry Sets a Record: 14 Flip-Flops in One Speech
Sen. John Kerry set some kind of record today in a speech to his fellow leftists at New York University. The Republican National Committee counted 14 flip-flops on Iraq.
Among the more egregious of the tragicomic whoppers noted:
• Kerry now claims the "most important task" is to win the "war on terrorism." Yet Kerry, speaking to his pets at the New York Times in March, refused to call the war on terror a war, RNC recalled.
Kerry then: "The final victory in the war on terror depends on a victory in the war of ideas, much more than the war on the battlefield. And the war - not the war, I don’t want to use that terminology."
• Kerry now claims Iraq was a "diversion from" the war on terror. On Dec. 15 he said: "Iraq may not be the war on terror itself, but it is critical to the outcome of the war on terror."
• Kerry now claims Saddam Hussein's evil was not enough to justify war. Here's what he said in a speech July 29, 2002:
"I agree completely with this administration’s goal of a regime change in Iraq – Saddam Hussein is a renegade and outlaw who turned his back on the tough conditions of his surrender put in place by the United Nations in 1991."
• Kerry now claims Saddam’s "downfall ... has left America less secure." Oopsy: Here's his anti-Dean, anti-Saddam stand in December 2003, according to Newsday:
"Those who doubted whether Iraq or the world would be better off without Saddam Hussein, and those who believe we are not safer with his capture, don’t have the judgment to be president or the credibility to be elected president."
• Kerry now claims the decision to go into Iraq was a "colossal" failure. Yet on Aug. 9, Kerry said that had he known then what he knew now, he would still have voted for the use-of-force resolution, according to CNN:
"Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it's the right authority for a president to have. But I would have used that authority, as I have said throughout this campaign, effectively."
• Kerry now claims Saddam was not a "threat to our security." Here's what he said in January 2003, according to the L.A. Times: "If you don't believe ... Saddam Hussein is a threat with nuclear weapons, then you shouldn't vote for me."
• Kerry now claims Saddam's "capability to acquire weapons" was not reason enough for war. Yet according to the Congressional Record of Oct. 9, 2002, he called those who would leave the Iraqi dictator alone "naive to the point of grave danger."
And so on and so forth.
At least no one can say Kerry is two-faced. He has so many more faces than that.

World bank chief backs Putin shake-up plans -WSJ

MOSCOW, Sept 21 (Reuters) - World Bank head James Wolfensohn has backed Russian President Vladimir Putin's political shake-up criticised by many Western nations as limiting democracy, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
But he expressed concern about limits on press freedom and moves against oil major YUKOS over huge tax claims.
Wolfensohn told the newspaper in an interview he did not doubt Putin's motives in overhauling the electoral system to boost Kremlin power. Putin said the changes were needed to beat terrorism after a string of deadly attacks across Russia.
The United States and the European Union have said the changes -- including direct nomination of regional governors -- come at the expense of democracy, but Wolfensohn was more supportive of the plans.
"I personally would be reluctant to conclude that his motives are bad," he said. Putin announced the shake-up after a fortnight of attacks by Chechen rebels, including the Beslan school siege that killed over 320 hostages -- half of them children -- and twin plane bombings in which 90 died.
Bearing in mind the bloodshed, Putin was taking the right steps, Wolfensohn said.
"I think Putin has a very difficult issue to face. The act of barbarism has upset the entire country and the first reaction is for security and trying to centralise it," he said.
"I continue to have the belief that Putin is trying to bring the country under control, and the country is not under control. So I feel for him."
Wolfensohn criticised moves to limit press freedom.
Top television current affairs programmes have been taken off the air and critics accuse newspapers of selective reporting.
"Clearly the moves in relation to press freedoms and in relation to YUKOS (YUKO.MM:) are of concern," he said referring also to the handling of the situation surrounding oil major YUKOS, which faces a potentially ruinous $7 billion tax bill.
The investigation into YUKOS and the arrest last October of the firm's former chief executive Mikhail Khodorkovsky on charges of fraud and tax evasion prompted speculation that the Kremlin was punishing Khodorkovsky for his political ambitions.
The affair also raised questions over Russia's commitment to market reforms.

Hugh, you've hit the nail on the proverbial head. This culture has eluded the consequences of its state sponsored terrorism with impudence for fourty years. The circumstances were obvious at the time, forcing the froggy's and brits out and facilitating a cargo cult of nation building. What was the arab response? To run into the arms of the russians, who promises of arms without uncomfortable questions about human rights had far greater appear to devilish minds.
Well the feces is about to hit the fan, the United States Armed forces hasn't engaged in unrestricted warfare since 1945. Wait for it, after the next attacks, the arab street will experience real flying carpet - bombing.

As for the future of Islam. We must consider that Islam retreats until a strategic opening is seen, and then it will advance on its neighbors as has been done for more than 1300 years. Hmmm, I dunno. Sure the country got all worked up after 9/11 but see how it has dissipated! We rely on the same hard core of patriots and military who have always protected us in wars. But the media with its aggravating indirection--the constant use of "insurgents" and "rebels" and so forth, and even the administration's clinging to this War on Terror motif--has kept the American people from understanding who we are fighting. (Well duh, that's the point of the site.) But I keep wondering, from my safe haven out here in Montana, whether people really do not understand that we are fighting Islamic jihadists, or if they really do, but are so scared of another 9/11 or worse that they are in utterly fear-induced denial.
I keep thinking of England in the 1930s. Hitler had written what he was going to do in Mein Kampf and was proceeding to do it right before everyone's eyes. But Baldwin and Chamberlain and Halifax and the whole Cliveden crowd kept clinging to their tired old pacifism and "sympathy" for the "legitimate grievances of Germany" which certainly must be addressed! I think in reality they were scared shitless and didn't know how to handle it. It's the irrationality and the barbarity they didn't get, so they lived in a dreamworld, narcotized by fine scotch and weekends at the country estate.
Or, it's like that syndrome where a hostage over-sympathizes with his captors to the point of going over to the enemy's side completely. We're held "captive" by groups like al quaida so a certain crowd will always be willing to cross over their side emotionally and intellectually. (Years ago I got a little bit of that feeling myself when I was beaten up by a gang in the schoolyard, and it was just abject fear of it happening again that made me later "sympathize" with them and nothing more.)

3. The next focus - Syria and by extension, Lebanon. The US orders Damascus to reveal its WMD warchest - full disclosure or else.... Also, Syria ordered to withdraw totally from Lebanon and disband anti-Israeli terror camps on its soil.
4. The final step: Saudi Arabia.
Given an ultimatum - either reform into a secular, liberal democracy or iraq;s fate 9viz. dismemberment) befalls you. And it happens. Saudi partioned into a shia-majority east (where the Oil fields, the largest in the world, reside)
and a non-wahabbi west 9containing Mecca and Medina). The Wahabbis are again reduced to eating sand (much like the sunni triangle hotheads) inside a limited and restricted area of influence.

Mr. President, here we go again, here we go again.
Rushing to give aid and comfort to the enemy.
Pushing and pulling and shoving and leaping over one another to assign blame and point the finger at America the Terrible.
Lining up in long lines at the microphones to offer apologies to those poor, pitiful Iraqi prisoners.
Of course, I do not condone all the things that went on in that prison, but I for one, Mr. President, refuse to join in this national Act of Contrition over it.
Those who are wringing their hands and shouting so loudly for “heads to roll” over this seem to have conveniently overlooked the fact that someone’s head HAS rolled - that of another innocent American brutally murdered by terrorists.
Why is it? Why is it that there’s more indignation over a photo of a prisoner with underwear on his head than over the video of a young American with no head at all?
Why is it that some in this country still don’t get that we are at war? A war against terrorists who are plotting to kill us every day. Terrorists who will murder Americans at any time any place any chance they get.
And yet here we are, America on its knees, in front of our enemy, begging for their forgiveness over the mistreatment of prisoners.
Showing the enemy and the world once again how easily America can get sidetracked and how easily America can turn against it self.
Yes, some of our soldiers went too far with their interrogation tactics and clearly were not properly trained to handle such duty.
But the way to deal with this is with swift and sure punishment, and immediate and better training.
There also needs to be more careful screening of who it is we put in these kinds of sensitive situations.
And no one wants to hear this, Mr. President and I’m reluctant to say it. But there should also be some serious questioning of having male and female soldiers serving side by side in these kinds of military missions.
But instead, I worry that the HWA - the Hand-Wringers of America - will add to their membership and continue to bash our country ad nauseam. And in doing so, hand over more innocent Americans to the enemy on a silver platter.
So I stand with Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma, who stated that he’s “more outraged by the outrage” than by the treatment of those prisoners.
More outraged by the outrage. It’s a good way of putting it. That’s exactly how this Senator from Georgia feels.

I think the degree to which the population will support veangance will depnd on the magnitude of the terrorist event. If there is another 9-11 scale terrorist event then riboflavin and f.g (f***ing goof??) are correct in that the majority will regard the killing of "innocent muslims" as hate crimes. In the event that the terrorist event is the detonation of a nuclear weapon or "dirty bomb" that kills hundreds of thousands (or millions) and seriously damages national infrastructure, then all bets are off. If this should happen, THERE WILL BE INTERNMENT CAMPS, and thousands of "innocent muslims" will not live long enough to make it to the camps. And BTW, I don't think it makes me a "racist" or "a nut" to make these statements, because the nature of racism is that it is an irrational fear of "the other". If a nuclear bomb goes off in a major city or cities in the western world, I think that fear of muslims would be entirely rational and any act to protect our lives and our way of life would be a legitimate act of self preservation.

I saw a clip of Bush cracking a broccoli joke the other day, a little clip, just 30 seconds or so. He absorbed a question about his attitude toward broccoli with one of his 'ignorant looking' smiles, and looked at the floor like an imbecile. Then, he came back with an apparent 'dumb straight' response, "I like it better than my dad"...He hesitated, he looked at the ground, "but to tell the truth I just like the tops."
He waited for a punch line that he obviously had in mind from the beginning, and prepared the audience for it with contrasting gestures, facial expressions, simpleton language; that joke got me thinking about George W. the man.
I agree with Hugh's remark in principle about the need for clear consequences to any Jihadist attack, but, economic and political realities make that difficult: we are weak. We are in enormous debt. We need people to buy our treasuries. And we need oil at low prices to generate the tax base necessary to pay our soldiers, build our weapons, move our ships, fly our aircraft. Oil at $60 a barrel for even a short period of time might wreck us economically. It must be avoided.
The suggestion above that Bush has some deceptive, tiered response in mind for Jihad intrigues me. Like the broccoli joke, he looks dumb, he talks dumb, he says all the wrong things. His policy in Iraq looks dumb...but, does he have something up his sleeve? And, more importantly, what is the punch line?
Riboflavin - Who says they are innocent? Many probably are as were the Japanese that were relocated during WWII. Many of those also weren't innocent and were active spies and collaborators. Now, consider that Islam requires that Muslims give its allegiance ONLY to the Umma and NOT to an entity such as the United States, we can believe that many U.S. Muslims, to be regarded as "true Muslims," will indeed do just that.
What is the solution? Should they be killed? Should they be relocated or deported? The decision must be in the best interest of the country as those that support the Umma and not the United States, even if not active, are implicitly against us. This is not racism because Islam is not a race. This is not bigotry, only self-defense against an ideology that DEMANDS our destruction.

Chem Bomb Plot Flashback: Kay Warned Iraq's WMDs in Syria
Just two months before al-Qaida terrorists were caught by Jordanian police transporting chemical bombs across the Jordanian-Syrian border, U.S. weapons inspector David Kay identified Syria as a likely hiding place for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
"We know from some of the interrogations of former Iraqi officials that a lot of material went to Syria before the war, including some components of Saddam's WMD programs," Kay told the London Telegraph.
Three weeks before Kay's comments to the London paper, the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf published a report from Syrian journalist Nizar Nayuf claiming that the transfer of Iraqi WMD to Syria was organized by commanders of Saddam Hussein's Special Republican Guard.
The report included a letter to Nayuf from an Iraqi source detailing the WMD transfers.
The Iraqi source claimed:
"We received confirmations that the Iraqi weapons, which were moved to Syria by the help of General Zoul-Himla Chalich are now hidden in three places inside Syria:
"First place: a tunnel dug in the mountain close to the Al-Baïdah village, which is roughly two kilometers from Misyaf village. This place is under the 489 Safety cipher Documents' office control.
"Second place: the factory of the Air Armed Forces in the village of Tal Sinan, between the town of Hama and Salamiyyah. This factory is under the Air Force control.
"Third place: the location of Shinsar, 40 kilometers south of Homs, two kilometers east of the Homs - Damascus road.
"There are underground tunnels there, controlled by Brigade 661 of the armed air Forces. It is a Brigade of air Patrol. The tunnels are several tens of meters deep. The weapons were transported in large wooden cases and barrels, under the supervision of the General Zoul-Himla Chalich and the son of his brother Assef, who works at Al-Bachaer company.
"The company is owned by the Assad family and has offices in Beirut, Damascus and Baghdad. This company also undertook the illegal Iraqi oil importation in Syria, and supplied weapons to Saddam."

On this thread, above, Stanley Baldwin is getting a bad rap. He did what he could. But the leftwing press denounced his activities and attempts to rearm as capitalist warmongering, and the rightwing press denounced him for painting Germany as the enemy, for as everyone knew, Germans and Herr Hitler were deeply interested in the maintenance of world peace.
Here are several remarks Baldwin made that deserve pondering in light of present circumstances:
1) November 1932: "I think it is well for the man in the street to realize that there is no power on earth that can prevent him from being bombed. Whatever people may tell him, the bomber will always get through....The only defence is in offence, which means that you have to kill women and children more quickly than the enemy if you want to save yourselves." (hardly a pacifist)
2) April 1934: "Since the days of the air the old frontiers are gone. when you think of the defence of England, you no longer think of the chalk cliffs of Dover, you think of the Rhine. That is where our frontier lies." (and now where does the frontier lie? -- nowhere and everywhere)
3) November 1936: "I am prepared to devote all our efforts, whatever it may cost in men and money, to do what is necessary, but I am conscious all the time of the folly of all of us." (at the Lord Mayor's Banquet, admitting that rearmament, while necessary, made war more likely).
Baldwin could not push the country as far as it should have pushed itself. The Oxford Union voted overwhelmingly that it would not fight for God and country. From 1933 on Germany had been on the warpath. Many people wrote about it, including refugees both Jewish and non-Jewish. There were no surprises. Mein Kampf had contained it all. HItler's hundreds of speeches said it all, very clearly (they have been compiled, and were published in English as well). To stop Islam completely it is not necessary to wage war in Muslim lands or even threaten to wage a physical war. All that is required is to stop its growth in the West. Islam as an ideology has to grow or it is a failure. Left to its own resources, it will die fast, regardless of bombings except of the nuclear kind.
After 9/11, mullahs and Muslims in the West were elated at the increase of conversions in the West to Islam. 9/11 was an unqualified succcess as far as increasing the size of the ummah is concerned. This should have told us something of the nature of the war we are in. It is therefore necessary to turn the tables.
In this war even a hint that Muslims will be shown the door out of the West, will cause conversions to Christiunity. Any moderate to large expulsions of Muslims, will lead to large scale conversions away from Islam.
No large scale offensives are necessary. We are not fighting a conventional war against a conventional enemy of the WWII type. We are fighting a recruiting war, or a better analogy - a market share war. As a capitalist societies there is really no excuse to lose a war for market share.

1. The fact that Muslims have slithered inside our borders and share dwellings with 30 of their relatives.
2. The fact that many of them get here and immediately jump on our welfare system.
3. The fact that they come here with the mindset that they only answer to their false supreme being Allah, and refuse to obey our laws.

I'm telling you. Some of you people really take the cake. Reading some of your comments about my posts make me wonder about your ages and your reading comprehension skills.
Just to clear the air here are my views in a nutshell:
1. Jihad and Islam is the number one problem in the world right now. Hence my interest in Robert’s site.
2. Islam has to be reformed or outlawed. It cannot be allowed to continue teaching and promoting violence.
3. It is important that the people of the world be alerted to the dangers that the Islamic teaching of Jihad posses.
4. I have no love or sympathy for Jihadists or rapists and could shoot either in the head without compunction.
5. That said, the rule of law must prevail over anarchy for civilization to continue.
6. Promoting violence against the Muslim population of the United States in “retaliation” for a future terrorist strike is immoral and illegal. The idea plays into the hands of the terrorists. They would like nothing more than for civil war and violence to break out in this country. The anonymity of the internet can really bring the worst out in people, me included.
7. Justice must be swift and complete against any nation, group, or person that commits terrorist acts against the United States or her allies.
8. The “War on Terror” isn’t going so well. Iraq is a distraction and misuse of our resources. But we are stuck with it and have to find a way to make the best of it. I say, if the citizens of the country don’t care enough to

I don't blame any country or company for not wanting to do business in Iraq. Who needs it? Everyone should bail and force Iraq to do its own dirty work.
I have been of the opinion for many years now that if we would just leave the Middle East alone they would just kill themselves off. Right now Iraqis are being killed by their own countrymen in the most moronic tactic imaginable, suicide bombing.
