One of the earliest and strangest figures of the war on terror, the American Muslim convert John Walker Lindh, is appealing for early release. From Reuters:
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The lawyer for an American sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. prison for fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan appealed to President Bush to lessen his sentence after a man in a similar case was freed.John Walker Lindh, 23, dubbed the "American Taliban," was captured during the Afghanistan war and was sentenced in 2002 under a plea deal.
His lawyer, James Brosnahan, said he had filed an appeal on Tuesday to commute the sentence after a long-held accused enemy combatant, Yaser Hamdi, was scheduled to be freed from the United States to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
Hamdi, a U.S. citizen, was also captured in Afghanistan.
"I hope America can find it in her heart to forgive John," Lindh's mother told a news conference. "John has admitted he made a mistake when he went to Afghanistan in June 2001 to fight in the civil war between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance."

I shudder to think what John Walker Lindh would have and could have done if he had not been captured (or killed), and had been sent back to his native country on a mission by his Al-Qaeda handlers. Also, I'd like to know if he still endorses the global jihad, and would fight against the United States again given the chance.

A brief comment regarding the hijab issue in france. Can someone tell me why, as guests or immigrants to a non-muslim country, how the muslims can demand anything. They are mostly arabs moving into mostly Christian White Anglo europeon places and they whine about discrimination etc and make demands. They don't belong there in my view, why don't they go back to where they came from? Can you imagine what would happen if say, Christians started moving into muslim countries and started complaining about discrimination? Something like, "what do you mean I can't wear a Crucifix on my hat and go to class, here in iran? Why do you iranians discriminate against my hat? I don't think they would last too long, do you? They expect tolerance but offer none.

The Federal Death Penalty Act of 1994 was enacted as Title VI of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. It became effective on September 13, 1994. See Pub. L. 103-322, Title VI, Sections 60001-26, Sept. 13, 1994, 108 Stat. 1959 (codified at 18 U.S.C. 3591-3598).
Congress established procedures for imposition of the death penalty for 60 offenses under 13 existing and 28 newly-created Federal capital statutes, which includes:
(1) homicide offenses;
(2) espionage and treason;
(3) non-homicidal narcotics offenses.
In addition there are the 2001 statutes:
18 U.S.C. 2381 - Treason.
18 U.S.C. 2332 - Terrorist murder of a U.S. national in another country.
Both carry the death penalty as punishment.
Now we don't know that Lindh actually killed anyone (or do we?), but we can certainly be sure that Lindh is a traitor to the United States.
To reduce his time in prison, I suggest that John Walker Lindh be re-tried under this statute for the crime of treason. That way, John Walker Lindh will get the punishment that he truly deserves, and will also have a shorter prison term at the same time.
Glad he brought the subject up. I agree with him completely - he did not get a fair sentencing. This statute would get him what a traitor in this country truly deserves.

I don't have much taste for the Muslims forbidding proseletyzing (spelling?) of other religions in their countries while avidly promoting their own abroad....but remember that they are, after all, "right".
Nevertheless, I think France's law is a human rights violation against all religions. The one thing the U.S. and the Muslim World have in common is an annoyance with France. (I said that for effect; but France is in a rather bad odor with many of us. The very "liberal" types are more inclined towards the French government's views).
Now, here's one....I got into an argument with someone over this who supported France's rule and said it was no different than laws here forbidding the wearing of gang-related apparel in the schools. I almost said "but gangs are involved in scoping out there turf, promoting violence, drugs, while religion...." Realizing I was going to have trouble finishing the sentence, I didn't begin it; I non-commitally changed the subject!

John Walker Lindh served at least life in prison, witout possibility of parole. If it were up to me, a harsher penalty would have been meted out.
The other guy, whatever-his-name-is, was allowed to walk because he is son of--SAUDIS! You see, even if you are an American citizen (by birth in his case) and you take up arms against the country of your birth of which you are a citizen, you cannot be held accountable for treason when you can claim SAUDI citizenship. Mrs. Lindh, when your son can reincarnate Johnny Michael Spann, and fill the void for his family and his children then, and only then, should he thank his lucky stars that he is still lucky enough to be in an American Jail for a 20 year sentence, and not waiting his turn for the gas chamber, which is also to kind of a method to eradicate vermin like your son.
Your son's plea should not even be entertained. He exercised his rights in an AMERICAN courtroom, protected by AMERICAN Justice, as an AMERICAN citizen.
I have a proposal for your son, if he renounces his citizenship and serves his 20 years in a Saudi jail, then I for one might might consider a reduction in sentence to 19 years, 364 days, 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. Sounds fair to me.
So Mrs. Lindh, have some respect for those who have worked hard to provide your son with those rights he was so quick to embrace at his capture, and quit coddling your son.
He made the choice to pick up arms and enter the battlefield with the Taliban. He met with Bin Laden and trained in an Al Qaeda camp. He swore Jihad against America.
He was a holdout in Mazar-i-Sharif, because he knew what was going to happen when Mike Spann was killed. Your son knew what was going to happen if he was captured. Upon his capture he was given excellent medical care for his wounds by members of the Naval Medical team on site at the time.
The whole time since your son's capture, through your attorneys, you have tried to portray your "little boy" as "misguided", and some how to have been persecuted. Enough of this nonsense. He agreed to a plea agreement and he plead guilty. Case closed.
