perhaps they were afraid of all the children songs he would sing. This is what he does these days, writes children's songs, helps other musicians to get started, aids islamic schools in their music departments and gives short talks on the basic teachings of islam.

This 56 year old man is less a security threat than ozzy osbourne...what's the deal here?

"Harold and Maude," a sentimental Hollywood versionn of "le vent se leva, il faut tenter de vivre," had its points (among them the death-camp number tattooed on Ruth Gordon's arm, visible only for a split second, and with not a word of discussion), was worth seeing, especially for the way Harold tried to get attention from his awful mother. Cat Stevens did the music for that, suitably sentimental, but temporarily hummable. Not enough to forgive, but on the other hand, not to be forgotten.

Still, it was right to land the plane in Maine. I feel Rex Harrison coming on.

I will not offer a link or a quote, but I was around during the Rushdie affair and I seem (was I dreaming?) to remember that your musical philanthropist was spouting something similar to the following:

"It is clear, from the Koran, that Salman Rushdie must die..."

That is what I remember and my memory ain't that bad.

I also remember Ozzie biting off the head of a pigeon, but I also remember Black Sabbath and Ozzie's solo career to be more stimulating to my mind than a "converted Bill", I mean Cat! mind-numbing dirge.

Islam only said that the Rushdie fatwa was not valid. However he did say that if Rushdie was found guilty in Sharia court for the same offense cited in the fatwa then he should be punished with death.

Also note his rather slippery condemnation of the murderers of Beslan. Islam said "[c]rimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him." No specific mention of murdering children and a careful reading indicates that he does not view 'innocent bystanders taken hostage' to constitute a crime. After all, he couldn't oppose hostage taking, it's expressly part of the Quran.

I don't know what reasons got him on the watch list but I'm glad to see he won't be spreading his poison here.

Yusuf said the fatwa was unjust and also said that IF salman was found guilty of a crime in the legal court system that the judge had a right to sentence him...I'm sorry, am i missing something?

so he said, issueing a death sentence on a man without trial is unjust but if a court tries him and finds him guilty of a crime then the judge has the right to issue the sentence he deems fit...sounds just to me.

Islamic Propagation Organisationi gives regime approval of Cat Stevens' music which will soon go on sale in Iran.

"We will also publish the comments of Yusuf Islam after September 11, in which he denounces the allegations made against Muslims," the official said, before going on to say the singer should visit the Islamic republic.

It seems a bit excessive. I don't agree with Cat Islam's commentary regardins Beslan, but I hardly see it as dangerous or inflamatory, and as far as his support of the Fatwa against Rushdie that was a while ago.

I do however suspect that there might be more to this story than what has been revealed. I wonder if Cat Islam is working with dangerous people who are diverting money from his charaties to something else. There has long been grey areas when it comes to Islamic charaties like Hamas.

In any case, it is clear that there is a great deal questionable about this preposterous counterculture casualty, and I am not in the least surprised that he showed up on the watch list.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel has denied entry to former British pop musician Yousef al--Islam because he supports the militant Palestinian organization Hamas, an Israeli official said on Thursday.

Al-Islam, who was known as Cat Stevens before converting to Islam in 1977, landed in Israel on a flight from Germany early on Wednesday. He was held at the airport for several hours and sent back to Germany, government spokesman Moshe Fogel said.

Al-Islam, who now sings only for his mosque, had "transferred funds" to Hamas in the past, the spokesman told Reuters.

"There was a problem with allowing him into the country because he is a Hamas supporter," he said.
"He didn't seem like he was coming here for summer tourism. Any country has the right to prevent...terror within its own borders."

As Cat Stevens, Al-Islam became famous in the 1970s for several recordings, including "Peacetrain" and "Moonshadow."

Fogel said his trip was intended to show support for the Palestinian cause while Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat were trying to hammer out a final peace deal at the U.S. presidential retreat at Camp David.

"He knew before he got on the plane that he didn't have permission to come into the country," Fogel said.

Israel has sought to cut financial support for Hamas, which opposes the Palestinian-Israeli peace process and has been held responsible for numerous guerrilla attacks in which scores of Israelis have been killed or wounded.

Al-Islam's Islamic faith was not the issue, and there was no discrimination or mistreatment of the musician, Fogel said.

"Israel has had numerous visits by celebrities who have turned to Islam," he said. "They have been received with open arms and enjoyed their stay."

Yusef Islam's semantics are as clear as a bell. In his statement he clearly accepts that the 'taking of hostages' is o.k. Islam's statement merely opposed any 'crimes' commited against those hostages. Nowhere did he equate hostage taking with a crime. If you don't like Islam's words take it up with him. But you will not publicly condemn another muslim will you?

As for digging through the Quran looking for whatever passages you choose to re-interpret or argue, forget that. You say you want one single verse - I won't play your game by your rules. If YOU are willing to be TRUTHFUL and state that it is against the will of Allah to take an innocent person hostage then please do so. You may make as many citations as you wish - ultimately I don't care what your religion has to say. As long as you don't try and foist it upon me it will remain entirely yours. All I really care about is what your co-religionists are willing to believe, and what they are willing to do in the name of God. If you are unwilling, or unable, to make such an assertion then it must be understood as a tacit admission that you believe the taking of innocent hostages to be acceptable to Allah.

WEIMAR, Germany -- A fire that hit a historic German library earlier this month destroyed twice as many books as previously thought, with some 50,000 works suffering irreparable fire damage, officials said Tuesday.

The Sept. 2 fire at Weimar's Duchess Anna Amalia Library tore through the roof and top floor of the 16th-century rococo palace housing the library, destroying classic books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in the city where the nation's most revered writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, spent much of his life. "The damages are much more terrible than we thought on the night of the fire," Hellmut Seemann, the president of the foundation that supports the library, told reporters.
In addition to the books lost, Seemann said that about 62,000 books were damaged, about 20 percent of the library's collection. Restoring those books will cost up to $73 million and take some seven years.
The books lost in the fire will be listed in an online database to be made available to the public, library director Michael Knoche said.
In addition, 37 paintings, including a 1760 portrait of Countess Anna Amalia by Johann Friedrich Loeber, were destroyed. Another 100 paintings, 80 sculptures and 20 drawings were damaged but can be restored, officials said.
Fire investigators have still not pinpointed the exact cause of the blaze, although earlier this month they said that a faulty electrical cable may have been responsible.

Kerry's Fund-Raisers Met With South Korean Spy

WASHINGTON – A South Korean who met with Sen. John Kerry's fund-raisers to discuss creating a political group for Korean-Americans was an intelligence agent for his country, raising concerns among some U.S. officials that either he or his government might have tried to influence this fall's election.

South Korean officials and U.S. officials told The Associated Press that Chung Byung-Man, a consular officer in Los Angeles, actually worked for South Korea's National Intelligence Service. A spokesman for the South Korean consulate office said that Chung was sent home in May amid "speculation" he became involved with the Kerry campaign and Democratic Party through contacts with fund-raiser Rick Yi, and that his identity couldn't be discussed further.
"According to international tradition, we cannot identify, we cannot say who he is, because he is intelligence people," spokesman Min Ryu said.
The State Department said it had discussed Chung's reported activities with the South Korean government and has no reason to doubt Seoul's representations he was an intelligence agent.
'Inconsistent' With Vienna Convention
The department believes Chung's contacts with donors and fund-raisers, if accurately described in reports, were "inconsistent" with the 1963 Vienna Convention that prohibits visiting foreign officials from interfering in the internal politics and affairs of host countries, a spokesman for its legal affairs office said.
Kerry campaign spokesman Chad Clanton said the campaign did not know Chung was an intelligence agent or that Yi, one of the campaign's key fund-raisers in the Asian-American community, was meeting with him until it was brought to light by the AP.

TORONTO - Yusuf Islam, the British singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, was the guest of honour at a Toronto fundraising dinner hosted by an organization that has since been identified by the Canadian government as a "front" for the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas.

In a videotape of the 1998 event obtained by the National Post, Mr. Islam describes Israel as a "so-called new society" created by a "so-called religion" and urges the audience to donate to the Jerusalem Fund for Human Services to "lessen the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Palestine and the Holy Land."

The Jerusalem Fund is one of four "fronts" named in a secret Privy Council Office memo that was sent to Jean Chretien, then prime minister, on May 23, 2000, discussing what it called groups that "have unsavoury links with terrorism.

"In a limited number of cases, fundraising in support of violent foreign struggles takes place in Canada through the cover of ethnic, religious or community-based associations and groups, lobbying and even criminal activity," the report says.

"Front groups operating in Canada include the Jerusalem Fund for Human Services (Hamas Front), the World Tamil Movement (Tamil Tigers Front), the Canadian Kurdish Information Network (Kurdistan Workers Party Front) and the Babbar Khalsa (a Sikh extremist front)."

Hamas, also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, is responsible for most of the suicide bombings against Israelis. Canada has outlawed Hamas under federal anti-terrorism legislation, making it illegal to support the group.

Best known for his hit songs in the 1960s and '70s, when he was known as Cat Stevens, Mr. Islam, 56, a Muslim convert, made headlines last week when his flight from London to Washington was diverted to Maine because his name appeared on a U.S. watch list.

He was expelled from the United States for national security reasons. "Yusuf Islam was placed on the watch list because of activities that could be potentially related to terrorism," a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told reporters.

The expulsion was criticized by Muslim groups, and Mr. Islam denies any ties to terrorism. "I never knowingly gave any terrorist group money," he said after being deported from Israel in 2000. "I've given to poor people and hospitals. I've helped to buy ambulances in the Holy Land. Obviously quite clear and supportable aims."

But on June 20, 1998, Mr. Islam gave the keynote address at a Jerusalem Fund fundraising dinner held in Toronto. The event was videotaped, and a copy was obtained by the SITE Institute, a U.S. terrorism research organization.

The video opens with a scene of Niagara Falls, overlayed with the Jerusalem Fund logo, which features the al-Aqsa Mosque and the maple leaf. It begins with an unidentified man explaining the activities of the Jerusalem Fund, which he describes as "helping the Muslims in Palestine" by financing hospitals, health clinics, families in need and orphans.

"Palestine is close to the heart of each and every Muslim. What the Muslims of Palestine have been doing for many years now has been that bright light shining, that hope ... that they are still believers that can raise the banner of jihad in the most difficult of circumstances."

Mr. Islam then begins a 45-minute speech in English in which he says it is "intolerable" for Muslims to "stand and watch" the situation in the Middle East. He describes Jerusalem as the centre of a land that is holy because of its connection to Allah.

"So this city which is blessed because of its religious nature. Therefore, what we see today is the result of the departure of religion from this area, of the uprooting of religion. So many of the people of the faith have been exiled from this region, moved on, to make way for what? Strangely and ironically, they moved on in the name of so-called religion, on behalf of ... the Jews.

"Of course, that would explain what is happening. Because the moment that religion and religious virtues disappear, there for sure follows trouble, tyranny, oppression," he says. "So what do we see then today? The concoction of a so-called new society based on an old society."

He says there could be "no redeemer except Allah. No political concept or construct or treaty or agent except the laws of Allah, which he instructed for this world. Jerusalem is that, the symbol of that. Out of the hands of the righteous then it falls into disrepute and blood.

"Jerusalem, al-Quds, it is a mirror reflecting the reality ... If it is dark, if it is bloody, then so too is the world. Today it reflects injustice of the secular man over the religious man. And how can the secular man be given the control and the sanctuary of the divine place of worship when he doesn't even respect what is holy? How? And how can those of faith allow that to happen? Therefore, peace will not return until we return to the Holy Land."
