Three years ago today America was alerted to the fact that we are the prime target of the global jihad. But since then there has been no El Alamein, no Midway -- no major encounter with the enemy. Any victories in this shadowy twilight war have come in the form of arrests of those who were plotting attacks even more heinous than 9/11, but these arrests have been little noted nor long remembered.
This is, of course, one reason why the war is so poorly understood and controversial: the enemy is not a nation-state but an ideology, an ideology which has been spread throughout the world and can now be found in practically every nation on the planet. Because of the religious derivation of this ideology, analysts are generally reluctant to identify it properly or fully.
That's why, for all of Mansoor Ijaz's justified optimism at the success we've achieved in the last three years, there is still much more to be done before we reach anything like victory. He contrasts his "humane, dignified Islam" with what Islam has allowed itself to become before the world, but few in the Muslim world are willing, as he notes, to confront the deep roots that jihad violence has in the Islamic texts. Non-Muslim officials, meanwhile, largely continue to pretend that mosques and madrassas will always of necessity be benign things, incapable of and unwilling to do harm.
This is why, after three years of success against the global jihad, we cannot count the jihadists out. More are being recruited every day. It is crucial now that we identify forthrightly what we are up against, so as to be able to fight against it more effectively. Otherwise September 11, for all our successes after that, will be just a prelude.

Yesterday, I went to Chicago for business. I happened across some school children near a memorial being erected for a cerimony to be held today.
Their teacher asked the the ten to twelve year olds, if they knew what happened on September 11. Half of this small group didn't know.
The teacher recalled the event, and told them about all the people who died in the twin towers.
A moment passed, and one of the kids (about 11 perhaps) said "so what?"
"So what?" Thousands of innocents died that day and the kid says "so what?" I was seething!
I kept my mouth shut, and walked away thinking that the kid is so typical of what America has become.
But then I thought, considering how the media has down played the islamic threat; considering how many of the terrorist are allowed to come in through Mexico; considering that many in the government are themselves islamic and do sympathize with bin laden; then maybe, saddly, the kid's comments are understandable in some way.
But I am still angry!
Why do otherwise intelligent people add pointless statement like this to essays?
Islam will surely lose its credibility as a great religion if its benefactors don't stand now and drive the final nail into the coffin of the terrorists who have hijacked a noble faith.

How many times in the past few days (say, starting from the democratic convention) have the leftists called the rightists 'nazis' and how many times have the latter responded with 'America-haters', 'apologists for islam' etc?
Unfortunately, it's not as if this is all because of an election season nearby. rather the invective from the left has been on the rampage ever since Bush took office. The left never really came to terms with Gore losing despite winning more votes than Bush did.
One thing we could possibly do is refrain from reacting to obvious provocations from across the ideological divide. (yeah, sure, it'll bite a bit but will ultimately work out for the best).

I am always one of the first here to object when individuals engage in what I consider petty squabbles in light of the greater Threat that we all face from islam, but I also understand human nature. People need to use whatever mental/emotional/spiritual resources they have to get them through this struggle, and I for one can be accommodating when it comes to the form that these differences take, even when they go beyond the bounds of what I personally consider acceptable. We are not a monolithic community, and philosophical differences abound. As long as we all pull together to face and defeat our common enemy (which I believe we do and will), our individual orientations become irrelevant in the light of that united purpose.

I have to tell you, after seeing news recaps of what happened on 9/11/01 it still brings a tear to my eye.
All of the victories in Afghanistan and Iraq do not make up for the HORROR that was inflicted on our country that day.

I think you could argue that the Right is actually closer to Islam than the Left. The religious Right has certain points of agreement with Islam, whereas the agnostic Left has none, and Islam sees Christians as Kitabis rather than Kafirs. Also, you don't have to believe Fahrenheit 9/11 to admit that Bush has close friends in the Saudi elite.

There are two questions here:
(1) How is the right closer to Islam then the left?
(ii) Why does the left defend Islam?
I will look first at how the Right is closer to Islam. If by "right" we mean religious, cultural and moral conservatism (there are other types of right; libertarianism, racism, etc.), then the attitudes to the rights of women, gays, the discipline of children, etc., are like a very weak reflection of Islam.
I consider the Old Testament to be at least as objectionable as the Quran (and very similar). A crucial difference between Islam and conservative Christianity, however, is that Christianity is basically anti-theocratic ("Render unto Caesar"), whereas Islam is inherently theocratic. It is true that there is that passage in Matthew, "not one letter of the Torah must be removed". However, all Christians historically and almost all Christians today consider this to mean only the moral and sacerdotal aspects of the Torah, rather than the legal aspects. The Christian Reconstructionist Movement apparently aims to apply the Torah as secular law, and I therefore find that type of Christianity (but only that type) as objectionable as Islam. I will not, however, consider it as dangerous as Islam unless it is shown to be as powerful, and, as far as I can see, it is just the lunatic fringe of the fringe.
Another group who aim to apply the Torah as secular law are ultra-Orthodox Jews. However, they only aim to apply it in Israel, so, although I view their aims as offensive, I am not personally threatened by them. One group, the Bnei Noach, apparently does aim to enforce the Torah worldwide. However, once again, it seems to be merely a fringe group, and therefore need not be equated directly with Islam.
I will now look at why the left flirts with Islam. Firstly, not all leftists do; look at Chris Hitchens, for example. Secondly, not all rightists are anti-Islamic; look at Bush's personal friendships with Saudis. However, many leftists, disgustingly, do defend Islam. There is no one single reason for this, but I will suggest several:
(i) The left defends down-trodden ethnic groups (in the UK, mainly Irish and West Indians). Stupidly, leftists tend to equate immigrant Muslim minorities with these groups.
(ii) The left tends to perceive the current "war on terror" as a classical imperialist/colonialist war. They are wrong, but that is the perception (I am opposed to the war, but for strategic rather than anti-imperialist reasons, and that debate belongs in a different post).
(iii) Multi-culturalism. Leftists fail to realise that Islam is the most anti-multi-culturalist worldview on the planet.
(iv) Equation with Christianity. Many liberals who disapprove of Christianity argue that Islam is no worse, and therefore should be defended just as Christianity is. The argument is that there is such as thing as theocratic Christianity, just as there is theocratic Islam, and they therefore should not be distinguished. This view is wrong, but it has two sources: (a) exaggeration of the influence of theocratic Christianity in the USA, eg. I know many people who assume Bush to be a Reconstructionist; (b) identification of the European ancien regime with theocracy.
(v) Fear of Christianity. A more extreme form of (iv).
(vi) Sheer opportunism. Ken Livingstone, the mayor of London, who I otherwise admire, recently feted in London a mullah who advocates the slaughter of Jews, Hindus, and homosexuals. This is because Livingstone's political support is too narrow, and he aims to strengthen it by currying the support of Muslims. That is disgusting, but there you are.
