BESLAN, Russia — Commandos stormed a school in southern Russia where hundreds of hostages had been held for three days, and dozens of hostages fled the building, some bloodied and screaming.Exchanges of gunfire rang out and a large plume of smoke rose over the school as troops clashed with the militants. Reports said some of the gunmen who had captured the building on Wednesday had escaped.
Russian authorities claimed to be in control of the building, but gunfire continued for more than an hour and hundreds of students and others apparently remained inside. Troops blew a hole into the wall of the school to help them escape, the ITAR-Tass news agency said.

Things haven't changed much since the USSR disintegrated. Everything is still hush-hush. Putin and his KGB pals abolished the concept of free media, and they directly benefit from the Chechen conflict. They couldn't care less about the Russian people. Human life has very little value in Russia.
If Russia wanted to end the war, it would. They still have enough nukes to wipe Chechnya off the face of the Earth. You can't say Chechnya is balkanized---it is mostly inhabited by Chechens. So what keeps Putin from implementing some kind of final solution, either obliterating the Chechens or giving them independence? Certainly not public opinion! (Since when does Putin care what the world thinks?)
It's really a classic case of follow the money, and of course dirty politics. Putin doesn't want to set a precedent for other separatist ethnic movements in Russia. Especially since some regions populated mostly by non-Russians are rich in natural resources. Also, just like in the U.S., the military-industrial complex (whatever was left of it) profits from any war.
So, who are the winners? Al-Qaeda and other Islamic terrorist organizations, for whom any conflict in the world which involves Muslims is a natural expansion of their global jihad, and Putin and other senior mafiosi who pocket tax revenues that go towards fighting Chechens, that otherwise could have gone towards building bridges and paving roads.
The losers? The Russian people who are being terrorized, and I guess the Chechen people, although I don't give a damn about these Muslims.
I woke up this morning at 5 am Eastern Time listening to the BBC World Service radio broadcast, which reported a scene of confusion, gunfire, and explosions. At 7 am, I was listening to NPR and learned that Russian commandos stormed the school and ended the standoff. This terrorist event haunted me, particularly as children were targeted, and even though I was on the road at 7 am, I phoned my spouse to say that the standoff had ended.
What can we do to help these children recover from this terrorist event?

But when the lives of innocent little children hang in the balance ,a situation this kind of intervention from the islamic powers that be would be strongly appreciated by the international community (not to mention the kiddy-hostages parents), there is no such attempt, not even so much as a poxy imam tries to talk them out of it.
