No doubt that Russia's entry full force into the war on terror is going to change it immeasurably. And maybe some of the West's curious half-heartedness about it so far will shake out. From the Washington Times, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:
The massacre of children by Muslim terrorists in southern Russia has widened a rift between Washington and Moscow on how to resolve the conflict in Chechnya and threatened to undermine the two countries' cooperation in the fight against global terrorism.Western countries "bear direct responsibility for the tragedy of the Chechen people when they give political asylum to terrorists," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said yesterday.
"When our Western partners say we should re-examine our policy, what you call our tactics, I would advise them not to interfere in our Russian internal affairs," he said after a meeting with former New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani in Moscow.
Mr. Lavrov was referring to Ilyas Akhmadov and Akhmed Zakayev.Beyond that, Russian officials have expressed anger at U.S. calls for a political settlement in Chechnya in contrast to Russia's commitment to purse a war on its own terror to victory.
Mr. Akhmadov was given asylum by the United States this summer and is currently in the Washington area. Mr. Zakayev lives in London.
U.S. officials said asylum decisions are made by the Justice Department and immigration judges on the merits of a case and not with foreign policy considerations in mind.
The State Department was not consulted in Mr. Akhmadov's case, they said. Some officials there were not happy about the decision's timing, but they noted that it was coincidental.
Both men are representatives of separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov, who is considered a "moderate" by some diplomats. They have also been linked to Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev.
You just wonder.
When in the name of commonsense will seriousness ever be applied to the fight against terrorism?
As long as politicians pander to the notion that Islam is a religion hijacked by a few extremists we will continue to receive the full recompense of their stupidity.
With free speech now virtualy stifled in many European countries under the guise of "racial vilification" the noose on the necks of those who see the situation for what it is, is just getting tighter and tigher.
You wonder how often one has to be slapped in the face for one to realise that the one doing the slapping is doing it out of contempt and not out of exasperation.
"Beyond that, Russian officials have expressed anger at U.S. calls for a political settlement in Chechnya in contrast to Russia's commitment to pursue a war on its own terror to victory".
Was this call made for a political settlement in Chechnya before the Beslin massacre? Would America settle for a political settlement if we suffered such a massacre? I think not ! In fact; of course not! This kind of nonsence is coming from our (maintain the status Quo,Don`t rock the boat) state department.
How many speeches did we hear from the RNC; that we cannot negotiate with terrorists? Yes ,even former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said it, as well California`s Governator Arnold Schwarzeneggar.
And we want cooperation with Russia on the fight against terrorism. American bureacratic agencies still have`nt caught up with the this ever encroachin threat and the doesnt leave out Homeland security as well. How do we light a fire under them?
"U.S. officials said asylum decisions are made by the Justice Department and immigration judges on the merits of a case and not with foreign policy considerations in mind".
Here we are dealing with a possible accomplice to terrorism and we are not going to give the Russians consideration after the viscious attack on children in Chechnya? Am I reading this right?
And we want cooperation from the Russians in the fight against terrorism with that kind of hypocritical double standard.
Russia is correct...no negociations, no hand wringing about how they supposedly "oppressed" the muslims, no rethinking policies....when the by-products of human waste take children hostage and shoot them in the back when they run...it is time to make sure that they NEVER get what they wanted...and as for the muslims of checnya being "horrified" by what the trash did...the only thing they are "horrified" by is the upcoming ass kicking they are going to get from russia, they fool no one...that is what should be done with all terrorists...when they perpetrate an act of terror in order to gain something, it should be made clear to them that they have now given up any chance of having what they wanted...ever.

Russia's right - if these men are associates of Basayev we are harboring terrorists. It's not too late to correct this mistake.

Maybe I was wrong about Putin. He is sounding more and more like a hypocrite to me. I agree that the US and UK should hand over these Chechen rebels/terrorists to the Russians, but does Putin have to be such a damn prick about it? These guys probably never would have been given asylum after what occurred in Beslan. Russia getting on a high horse and acting indignant about US and British "coddling" of Chechen rebels/terrorists is really the height of hypocrisy. At least we aren't helping the Chechens build nuclear bombs, as the Russians are doing with Iran.
Just so it is clear, I do think Russia has a right to be upset with the US and UK. However, the US and UK have a right to be upset with Russia due to their dealings terrorist-supporting nations such as Iran and Syria. Putin ought to be able to work out a deal with Bush, so that the US and Russia appear united in the War on Terror instead of all this public bickering and divisiveness that is occuring. The appearance of division helps our mutual enemies.
Nicely put lemonjoose.
What's more, a US-Russia alliance against terror (Oops, make that jihad) can yield rich dividends in central asia, Pak-Afghanistan and the caucasus apart from of course, Israel-Palestine.

For Russia (former Soviet Union) to accuse the West of harbouring terrorists is for the pot to call the kettle black. The Russians done more than their fare share of providing financial and arms succour to groups whose cause somehow served their purposes.
There's enough finger pointing to go around. What's needed is a concerted effort to eliminate the problem as there is no negotiating with those that want to eliminate or enslave us. Hanging tough together is our best hope of removing this international scourge.
Let's face it. U.S. and Russia are both guilty in harbouring terrorists. U.S. helped bin laden back in the 1980's to aid them to fight the communists. Russia is aiding Iran in their nuclear program. I think both superpowers should repent, move on and forget the past.It just goes to show you how muzzies can betray and take advantage of you generousity.Look at the Shiites in Iraq. They welcomed the American soldiers when Saddam's regime toppled. No they turn against them.It just goes to show you that Muslims cannot be trusted. So a big lesson for the U.S. and Russia is do not harbour muslim governed countries.
Killing them is the most efective control measure we have . Peace loveing muslims (jihadists) of the filipino kind are finding this out.I have been hearing some very interesting comments about the 2002 u.s.,training of filipino marines. I think the filipinos are now doing there own pest control. Givem hell Bush.
Russia is right about the assylum issue. I think that they do have a double standard though since they were sending weapons to Iraq during the war...and those weapons weren't for the US. Now most of the weapons used by the jihadists in Iraq are Russian, Chinese, and French.
Resister, I'd hazard a guess that most of those weapons are Made in China, not Russia.
The point is Russia is so poor it has to sell anything to anyone, just look at the state of its armed forces, theyve had practically no money spent on them since 88.
I think Russia might get less involved in Iran if the US was less involved with Saudi Arabia. Dont forget the Saudis fund anti US terror too.
