NY Times reporter joins jihad, tips off terror charity about FBI raid

An astounding story from the New York Post (thanks to Unhinged):

The Justice Department has charged that a veteran New York Times foreign correspondent warned an alleged terror-funding Islamic charity that the FBI was about to raid its office — potentially endangering the lives of federal agents. The stunning accusation was disclosed yesterday in legal papers related to a lawsuit the Times filed in Manhattan federal court.
The suit seeks to block subpoenas from the Justice Department for phone records of two of its Middle Eastern reporters — Philip Shenon and Judith Miller — as part of a probe to track down the leak.

The Times last night flatly denied the allegation.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald of Chicago charged in court papers that Shenon blew the cover on the Dec. 14, 2001, raid of the Global Relief Foundation — the first charges of their kind under broad new investigatory powers given to the feds under the Patriot Act.

"It has been conclusively established that Global Relief Foundation learned of the search from reporter Philip Shenon of The New York Times," Fitzgerald said in an Aug. 7, 2002, letter to the Times' legal department.

He said he understood journalists' concerns about protecting the identities of their sources, but national security and preventing leaks that thwart probes into "terrorist fund-raising" trump such confidentiality.

"I would posit that the circumstances here — the decision by the reporter to provide a tip to the subject of a terrorist fund-raising inquiry which seriously compromised the integrity of the investigation and potentially endangered the safety of federal law-enforcement personnel — warrant such cooperation in full," Fitzgerald said.

Times lawyer George Freeman told The Post that Fitzgerald "wrongly" suggested that Shenon alerted the Islamic charity to the raid.

"We deny he tipped anyone off," Freeman said.

He added that Global Relief would have anticipated the raid in any case because the feds had already hit the office of another suspected terror-funding Islamic charity, the Holy Land Foundation, and the government had frozen the assets of several other charities.

It doesn't surprise me to see that the New York Times staff is involved in this type of treachery.

Jayson Blair (NY Times) joined Janet Cooke, formerly of the Washington Post, the New Republic's Stephen Glass, the Boston Globe's Patricia Smith, and Jay Forman in Slate as journalists who got caught embellishing, exaggerating, and outright lying in print. Dan Rather is determined to sink CBS.

It's only a matter of time before the left chokes on it's agenda and implodes.

If this sort of had happened in mediaeval Britain, the bastard would have suffered such an agonizing fate, he'd wish he was dead, and would deeply regret ever fucking with the monarchy/parliament before he died.

If the same thing happened in China, Russia (or ex-soviet countries), or Cuba, in the present day, he would likewise be tortured and executed, or just plain executed.

Sarin Nerve Agent Bomb Explodes in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for ``minor exposure,'' but no serious injuries were reported.
``The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found,'' said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq. ``The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.
``A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent,'' he said.
The Iraqi Survey Group is a U.S. organization whose task was to search for weapons of mass destruction after the ouster of Saddam Hussein in last year's invasion.
``The round was an old binary-type requiring the mixing of two chemical components in separate sections of the cell before the deadly agent is produced,'' Kimmitt said. ``The cell is designed to work after being fired from an artillery piece.''
He said the dispersal of the nerve agent from a device such as the homemade bomb is ``limited.''
``The former regime had declared all such rounds destroyed before the 1991 Gulf War,'' Kimmitt said. ``Two explosive ordinance team members were treated for minor exposure to nerve agent as a result of the partial detonation of the round.''
In 1995, Japan's Aum Shinrikyo cult unleashed sarin gas in Tokyo's subways, killing 12 people and sickening thousands. In February of this year, Japanese courts convicted the cult's former leader, Shoko Asahara, and sentence him to be executed.
Developed in the mid-1930s by Nazi scientists, a single drop of sarin can cause quick, agonizing choking death. There are no known instances of the Nazis actually using the gas.
Nerve gases work by inhibiting key enzymes in the nervous system, blocking their transmission. Small exposures can be treated with antidotes, if administered quickly.
Antidotes to nerve gases similar to sarin are so effective that top poison gas researchers predict they eventually will cease to be a war threat.

IRAQI URANIUM NOW IN U.S. LABS
The good news: U.S. troops and scientists have taken a heap of radioactive material out of insecure locations in Iraq. The bad news: they may have brought the stuff to insecure locations here in America.
"In a secret operation, the United States last month removed from Iraq nearly two tons of uranium and hundreds of highly radioactive items that could have been used in a so-called dirty bomb," the AP reports.
"The nuclear material was secured from Iraq's former nuclear research facility and airlifted out of the country to an undisclosed Energy Department laboratory for further analysis, the department said in a statement."
That could mean that the material is now at the famously ill-defended Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, if recent history is any guide. The remnants of Libya's aborted nuclear program were brought there, not long ago -- an odd choice, considering Y-12's guards have been cheating on security drills for twenty years or more, according to a Congressional report. During one test, simulated terrorists took a mock, 44-pound uranium package, and "got outside of the fences in 38 seconds," according to a former Y-12 security analyst.

Wamp: Oak Ridge plays 'key role' in removing Iraqi nuclear material

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- Experts from the Energy Department's nuclear weapons and research complex in Tennessee played a ''key role'' in removing radioactive material from Iraq that could be used in a dirty bomb, U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp said.
Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham announced in Washington on Tuesday that DOE and the Defense Department removed 1.77 metric tons of low-enriched uranium and about 1,000 highly radioactive sources from a former nuclear research facility in Iraq.
The material was flown to the United States on June 23.
The uranium will be stored temporarily at a ''secure DOE facility'' and the radioactive sources were taken to a ''DOE laboratory'' for further examination, DOE said.
