JERUSALEM - A female Palestinian suicide bomber blew herself up near a crowded bus stop in Jerusalem on Wednesday, killing one person and wounding at least 14 others, Israeli authorities said.The explosion occurred at a busy intersection in French Hill, a Jewish neighborhood close to the West Bank. The neighborhood has been attacked by suicide bombers in the past.
The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a violent group loosely linked to Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press.
Moshe Suissa of the Jerusalem fire department said the attacker tried to approach a hitchhiking post used by Israeli soldiers when a border police officer spotted her.
"He tried to stop her and she blew up," Suissa told Channel Two television.
The blast destroyed the bus stop, leaving shards of glass scattered in the road as the smell of burnt rubber wafted in the air.
Israeli rescue workers reported one dead and 14 wounded, at least one in serious condition.
It was the first Palestinian suicide bombing since Aug. 31, when a pair of attackers killed 16 people in the southern city of Beersheba, and the first to strike Jerusalem since Feb. 22.
Palestinian militants have staged more than 100 suicide bombings inside Israel during four years of fighting. Women have carried out at least eight of the attacks.

Who are you trying to kid? The Palestinians have NEVER recognized tht 1949 cease fire lines as Israel's border and they do not recognize it as such now. Both Fatah and Hamas agree on the destruction of Israel (see the Hamas charter and PLO phased plan for yourself). Essentially, the Palestinians, backed up by the larger Arab World, have been in a state of total, though low intensity, war against Jews since 1920, as I'm sure you know as well as I.
Israel, on the other hand, has NEVER acted in a manner consistent with total war. Don't believe me? Just compare Israel's operations in the West Bank and Gaza with the way Syria treated the Mulsim Brotherhood in 1982. You remember Hama, don't you? The city Assad the elder razed, killing 20,000 of his brother muslims in less than 2 weeks to eliminate his own intefada. I have never seen any Islamic country or organization object to that. What was good enough for Syria is certainly good enough for Israel.
