From Malaysia's New Straits Times (with thanks to Nicolei) comes just what The Economist and the rest of the world is looking for: a moderate Muslim ready to denounce violence and terrorism perpetrated in the name of Islam.
Can we, the truly caring decent Muslims, not protest? Can we not say to the world that no, you have it wrong. Islam is not about killing. Islam is not about attacking five-year-olds on the threshold of a new life in a new country, killing them or leaving them impaired for life, if not physically, then definitely psychologically.Islam is not about killing, torture and revenge, but whom do we tell this to? Where can we, the common man, go to plead the case for Islam? Is there a world tribunal for redress where people like you and I can plead on behalf of our faith? Where we can explain in simple layman's terms that mad people kill, not religion? I know I am not equipped to delve at length into the philosophies and the fatwa, or the intricacies and the why of clever things like international relations and politics. I just despair that we have still not resolved age-old differences, nor healed age-old wounds. Since the dawn of mankind, we have always been at strife with one another.
At least, sad though it may be, the one thing constant with mankind is we have never been at peace. But surely there must be something that we can all do. It is time for all true Muslims to stand up and denounce terrorism in our own way. On a personal level, perhaps we could help separate the real Muslims from the murdering frauds who kill in the name of religion for whatever cause. Help to explain that the taking of lives, but for self-defence, is something all decent Muslims don't condone.
People who kill innocents and who do not respect life must be exposed. Decent Muslims must stand up to expose them for the devils that they are for the sake of all good and peace-loving Muslims.
And we have to do it now.
For Muslims all over are being condemned and spat upon by people who do not know better.

The Muslim world must counter these atrocities. For how else can we set the balance right? Soon after Sept 11, I remember sitting horrified for days watching and listening to the reports on CNN and BBC. Much of what was happening was beamed to the world, primarily through these two channels. The news was slanted to portray the suicide bombers as the cold-hearted cowardly common murderers that they were. And I cringed at the terms that flailed my very soul — Muslim terrorists, Muslim suicide bombers, Muslim this and Muslim that. It is so unfair to be associated with killers who have no right to call themselves Muslims.
How dare they claim to be on a jihad to save the Muslim world? When innocent blood is shed, you forfeit the right to call yourself a martyr. It's time Muslims had their own wide-reaching PR set-up to explain the other side of the story. It is because we are not doing so that we are being misunderstood, feared and reviled.
We should all make it our personal jihad to correct the negative perceptions before this madness comes to our shores.

Osama and the likes of him are able to and confidently quote from the Koran and hadiths to justify their terror. Many of the Muslim terrorists have studied in madrassahs and too many Islamic teachers and scholars have have been associated with or condoned the Islamic terrorists for their Islam to be classified as an aberration. There are millions of people around the world who call themselves "Muslim" primarily out of familial/cultural tradition and/or the accident of geography. The gentleman in the article says it all when he says that he is "not equppied to delve at lenghth into the fatwas and philosophies" which underpin Islamic terror, and this fact is the shining beacon of hope in this hell called Islam: most Muslims have never read the Koran or the ahadith at length, and don't realize just what kind of person Mohammed was.
These Muslims are the ones who practice almost a kind of neo-Sufi-ism, at odds with the real message and content of what is in the Koran. These are the ones who must eventually separate from the others. How or when this separation will take place, is anyone's guess.

One need not be locked forever into a belief-system that inculcates hostility, even murder, of those who do not share that belief-system, that systematically suppresses women, that suppresses freedom of conscience by prescribing death for apostates, that limits free inquiry (why, after all, have there been fewer translations into Arabic, in all of recorded history, than the number of translations made each year in Spain alone -- surely the reason is the remarkable lack of curiosity, born both of fear and contempt, for anything that is non-Islamic, except perhaps as a curio, or when absolutely necessary for certain limited ends, such as weapons technology).
Not everyone who, through no fault of his or her own, is born into Islam, is a robot or automaton. Not everyone born into Islam, through no fault of his own, is willing indefinitely to accept this belief-system without some inquiry into its origins in history (an attempt by pagan Arabs to offer a belief-system, familiar and yet different, that would both justify and promote their conquest of much larger, settled, richer, more advanced populations of Christians and Jews in Mesopotamia, Syria, Judea, Egypt, North Africa). Some of these people will call themselves ex-Muslims. Some will say nothing, and quietly move away. And others will attempt to have the Higher Criticism that was applied to Christiantiy and Judaism applied to Islam.
In the end, numbers matter. If these latter can attract more than a handful, then perhaps some modus vivendi between Islam and the entire non-Islamic world can be achieved. But if not, not, and despite the army of apologists, whether tarted up in academic garp (Sells, Ernst, Esposito, the "researcher" Kepel), reality will continue to undercut whatever prediction, whatever thesis, whatever absurd explanation they may offer that purports to explain Muslim behavior ("poverty," "American support of Israel," a "war within Islam" that really has nothing to do with Infidels), again and again they will be showed up -- by the evening news.

On a related note, Muslim World Today, a magazine published in California, has an article called "Balancing Family and Jihad" -- a wonderful title, for which the author or publsiher deserves great credit -- about the new outreach to female Muslims to do their bit for the Jihad. The problem With talking to most Muslims is that you are dealing with "Circular Thought". You can't reason or really even debate an issue with them.
For instance, they will ask you for proof of your arguements through the Quran, you go and quote those parts to back up your arguement, they in turn will tell you whatever scholar you've quoated is not the one they've studied, but will then use that section to back up their point stating that if it's in the Quran, it must be correct.
If you read the Quran with an unbiased eye, you'll realize a few things....................
First its a story about a very gifted con artist.
Mohammed came from nothing, was basicly nothing and was never gonna have anything.
He found a way to con the people around him into believeing he was a messager from God, by using the stories he'd heard from the travelors he'd met.
Even in the Quran, it stated that the Bible is a holy book, which shows it pre-dates him and he was aware of the stories, which he used to influence those around him.

When you read the Quran, the one thing that really stands are the contradictions. Its almost as if Mohammed would have us believe that God was just sitting on his celestrial cloud, staring pensively off into the universe, finger on chin, thinking I don't know what to do today.
So, God decides that today will be a pink day!!! He sends this message to Mohammed, who then tells his followers, God says everything is pink.
But, then he asks us to believe, that the next day, God comes back, tells Mohammed that He made a mistake, he really ment blue.
According to the Quran, the Supreme Being can't make his mind up.
This is the problem with the Quran or even trying to reason with people that have been indoctrinated

Lots of hate and venom even in response to a
"moderate" Muslim condemning terror. It unleashed a barrage of the usual attacks on Islam and its Holy Prophet.It seems that the only solution is for Muslims to abandon Islam and go back to the religion of their ancestors even if was paganism.
Do you also condemn modern war which has killed a large number of civilians,sometimes deliberately,to retaliate or just to destroy the morale of the civilian population to continue supporting the war? Even the use of nuclear bombs on Japan has been justified to save the lives of soldiers and enemy civilians.
Is this policy the result of the teachings of Jesus? The Catholic Church has accepted the concept of a "just war" despite Jesus. The Crusades killed many Christians from other sects as well as massacring Jews and Muslims.
I believe one has to study the application of jihad in the time of the Prophet and see when the verses were revealed to determine whether they were for a particular time or circumstance and see whether there all verses are to be applied regardless of the circumstances.The Qur'an has a very restricted view of jihad and and always chooses peace when the other side inclines to it.
It still could serve as a model for war in modern times.
What about terrorism? Is it permitted or recommended in Islam? Does it allow the indescriminate killing of civilians? Some so-called scholars try to justify it based on the desperate conditions that Muslims now find themselves in-without the ability to have equivalence in power while being oppressed and in order achieve a legitimate goal. It was used in Algeria and now in Palestine where it now uses suicide bombers. I don"t believe it has been used in a war where Muslims were not being oppressed.
After WWI,Muslim lands were occupied and exploited. If not for WWII none of these lands would have been liberated.
Chechnya seeking its independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union as other Soviet states did has been scorched and a puppet state set up.
Osama sought the expulsion of the US from Saudi Arabia in order to allow for regime change internally either peacefully or by revolution.

He certainly did not do it to spread Islam but had to find justification for his concept of jihad. Nevetheless, jihad was used to justify a fight for liberation. Most scholars do not accepted overturning a Muslim leader by violence although some consider it necessary when the ruler is violating basic Islamic concepts in ruling such as opprssing the people and not allowing them to live according to Islam in its political area.
Having said all this,Muslims lack religious leaders who understand the modern world and who are unbiased in their evaluation of the political,economic and social conditions and a sufficient number of educated and disciplined believers who are not solely motivated by nationalism but a desire to see the Islamic system operative,first in their private lives and then in the society. Today, many are ready to carry out the small jihad and also die for what they believe is reuqired for a Muslim but not many are ready to patiently live for Islam which is the greater jihad.
The struggle for the minds, hearts and souls of Muslims has been neglected by the Muslim scholars.
The Sufi approach has tried to remedy this for centuries but has been limited to a relatively small section of society. We may not need a reformation but we certainly needed a spiritual revival. We have seen a number of political movements from the Mahdi in the Sudan to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Some have developed into extremist groups especially after being suppressed as in Egypt.
The comments I have read are clearly written by unabashed enemies of Islam who care nothing for trying to promote peace in the world but want to demonize Islam for a fundamentalist, fanatical Christian agenda, and who reject Islam totally as unacceptable as a belief and practice and would like Muslims to disappear.
The right wing supporters of Israel have joined in this campaign.
The Holy Qur'an states in Surah 29 v. 46:

The so-called "enemies of Islam" are not just Christian fundamentalists, as you might think. They're also Hindus, Buddhists, animists, Ba'hai, etc.
And as for "demonizing Islam," it's becoming clear that Islam has done that to itself without any outside help.

These are some commonsense designs for society, notice how Allah (or some holy message) was not included, since it is not difficult to figure out how to run a society without Allah, the last profit, Muhammad, & all the spooky warnings.
If I am not worried about the promises of the ‘next world’ then I am able to fully focus on how to improve the one I am currently living.
For example, Albert Camu discussed, once a person realizes the 'death' of Allah and the death of paradise, is fact, then he is finally able to connect to his transcendental historic passage, in the living world.
The death of Allah is the awakening of man. Once man discovers his intrinsic divinity; he not longer needs the external Allah.

It seems that the unhappy writer has figured he needs to take a long, hard look at his religion, and find out if he is capable of answering the OBL-types on their own turf. It may be that after performing such a task, he and people like him will decide Islam is irreformable, and he'll end up like Nonie Darwish or Walid Shoebat--Christians in a religion whose founder gave his life for his sheep rather than fleecing them.

Islam's so-called 'enemies' are the product of Islamic ideology's own circular (and bogus) reasoning...not an understanding of any reality. In effect Islam has declared itself enemy of a stated collection of humanity grouped under the general heading of 'religion' or more precisely 'unbelievers.' Islamic ideology hides this by setting up the 'enemies of Islam' as a rhetorical straw man.
These religious and otherwise communities of people did not set out to attack Islam...Islam set out to attack THEM. In effect, Islam has made itself the 'enemy' of humanity in general while making a show of the opposite. Absolutely anyone and everyone non-muslim is actually being labeled an enemy of Islam.
Why? Most likely, Islam is sneakily asserting its right to conduct human sacrifice in conjunction with its established practice of idol worship. Such primitive societies are invariably and inextricably linked (human sactifice and idol worship have gone together since between the dawn of time...look at the ancient Middle East or even native hawaii and Polynesia) and are understandably totalitarian as anything other than totalitarianism would establish the empowerment of the individual to save their own lives. False gods in paganism are often attempted to be kept alive through the continual practice of human sacrifice. You'll note that Islam's supposed deity al-lah NEVER interacted with man in recorded history. Why? Probably because al-lah is an invention of the human mind. And you'll notice that islam includes generous amounts of homicide, for reasons never really explained.
Our friend in Malaysia has been lied to his whole life, as is nearly universally true among Islam's 'believers' which is why they 'believe'. He has vainly tried to make Islam something it can never and will never be by projecting his own personality onto it. The reality of Islam is simply too awful for him to accept and his denial is what has come through. He is sadly unable to shield himself from Islam's horror, as is the rest of the world.
