BESLAN, Russia - Camouflaged security agents carried babies to safety after militants holding hundreds of hostages at a school released at least 31 women and children Thursday, and officials expressed hope that negotiations would bring more progress in the standoff in southern Russia.But a crowd of hostages' relatives keeping vigil outside the school was shaken when a pair of explosions went off just ahead of the release. Officials said militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at two cars that got too close to the school.
The developments came after a night of telephone negotiations between Russian authorities and the militants, who stormed the school Wednesday, rounding up around 350 children and adults into a gym and threatening to blow up the building if police launch an assault.
Local official Lev Dzugayev called the release "the first success" and expressed hope for further progress in negotiations. He has said between 15 and 24 militants were thought to be in the school, which has been surrounded and cordoned off by security forces.
In his first public comment on the standoff, President Vladimir Putin pledged to do everything possible to save the hostages' lives. "We understand these acts are not only against private citizens of Russia but against Russia as a whole," he said. "What is happening in North Ossetia is horrible."
The rescue operation's headquarters reported that 26 women and children were released in one group, and that another group included three women and two children.
Camouflage-clad security agents carried babies and young children -- some wrapped in blankets, some naked -- from the scene and into cars. An Associated Press Television News reporter saw soldiers escorting two women and at least two children away from the school.
Officials at the crisis headquarters said the releases came after mediation by Ruslan Aushev, an Afghan war veteran and former president of the neighboring Ingushetia region who is a respected figure in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region.
As Dzugayev announced some of the releases, a crowd of relatives swarmed around him, trying to find out if their loved ones were among those freed.
The hostage-taking in Beslan, a town of about 30,000 in the southern region of North Ossetia, appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks by insurgents from the nearby war-town republic of Chechnya. Suspicion has fallen on Chechen rebels, although no claim of responsibility has been made.

Russian Muslims Condemn School Hostage-Taking

MOSCOW, September 2 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – Muslim leaders in Russia have sharply condemned holding hundreds of children hostage by an armed group in the north of the country.
A number of armed men and women, some strapped with explosives, broke into a school in the town of Beslan in North Ossetia on Wednesday, September 1, killing seven people, and herding pupils, parents and teachers into a gym.
The Russian Fatwa Council denounced the abduction, saying it is "a terrorist act that Islam totally refuses and forbids."
"The council condemns the act of taking hostages and the metro blast taken place Tuesday in northern Moscow," Ramil Bilayev, the council's spokesman told IslamOnline.net over phone.
He went on: "The council's chairman Ravil Gainutdin had described what happened as a terrorist act that Islam totally refuses and forbids and urged for a swift release of the hostages."

first off it is not known yet if these people are chechens. all reports thus far have pointed that they are from ingushetia. now it is possible that they are affiliated with chechens but even if they are that is not conclusive that they are muslim jihadist. in the chechen conflict not all of the rebels are muslims and those who are muslims not all are what you would consider jihadist terrorists. i do not support the actions of the hostage takers but before you make inflaming headlines maybe you should wait till more facts are known about this event.

School hostages in “tolerable” condition

BESLAN - schoolchildren said on the phone that their condition was “tolerable”, RBC TV reported.
Earlier, Russian physician Leonid Roshal attempted to resume talks with the terrorists, but they did not respond, Lev Dzugayev, head of the North Ossetian President’s Information and Analytical Department, told reporters. “Our main task now is to pass on medicines, food and water to the children taken hostage,” he added.
According to unofficial reports, 16 people were killed by the hostage takers. Of them, 12 people were killed inside the school, two died in hospital and the bodies of two others still lay outside the school. Reportedly, one of the dead was a pupil's parent who tried to resist the attackers. Thirteen others were wounded, according to the news agency. Earlier, the command center said there were no victims among the children.
Echo of Moscow radio said a group of 15 schoolchildren managed to escape. Twelve of them hid in an outhouse and later made their way to the police and troops surrounding the school, and three students jumped out of the window after the school was seized.
According to NTV, several respected community members in Chechnya and Ingushetia offered themselves as hostages in exchange for women and children. The terrorist did not react, but earlier, they turned down an offer to exchange adults for children.
During his conversation with the rebels, doctor Leonid Roshal offered the hostage takers a safe corridor to Chechnya if they released the children. But the bandits rejected the offer. They also refused to take food and water for the hostages.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have established the identity of some members of a group that seized a school in the North Ossetian city of Beslan, Valery Andreyev, head of the North Ossetian Department of the Federal Security Service, told reporters.
