When your friends are not your friends. From Peter Worthington in the Toronto Sun, with thanks to EPG:
Canadian soldiers attached to the Afghan National Army (ANA) have stirred up a hornet's nest in Kabul by being too efficient. They've "discovered" a huge Soviet ammunition dump a few kilometres from Camp Julien with the potential of obliterating the camp, as well as most of Kabul....
In the dusty foothills, 10 minutes drive from Camp Julien (population 2,000), 82 buried bunkers, each 20-metres long, housed thousands of Soviet FROG missiles (one step down from Scud missiles), and every variety of rocket and mortar shells.
Some of the FROG missiles were still in their original cases. Some heaped in the open. Some stacked to the roof in the unlocked, open bunkers. Much of the ordnance had warheads removed to collect the explosive for homemade bombs -- or for blasting at a nearby quarry.
"Unbelievable!" was Maj. Brian Hynes' reaction when he saw them. "We (troops of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)) have been here some two years, and no one knew this was at our back door. Unbelievable."
In truth, the Soviet bunkers were well-known in an area supposedly under control of the Afghan Militia Force (AMF) -- not to be confused with the ANA. The AMF is paid by various warlords and so their loyalty is to them....
Many of the rockets, missiles and shells had been pried open for the explosives, which are used peacefully to blast mountain rock into gravel, and by those who want to make bombs that disrupt Kabul....
I've never seen anything like it. The feeling is that AMF soldiers were selling access to the dump or permitting friends to enter it.
Littered with burned out Soviet military vehicles, the whole area is a junk pile strewn with every sort of live ammunition, fuses, unexploded shells, rockets, etc., all supposedly under the authority of Belgian troops (at the moment), who ignored it.
In the midst of examining the bunkers and taking photos, a Swedish UN guy, a French major and a German colonel arrived to make a fuss and order the Canadians to leave. The French major insisted his government had a deal with the Afghan government for the area, and ISAF had no business being there....
"I feel foolish that for eight days we've been watching our front, when at our back all this was going on and nobody cared," said Sgt. Mazerolle.
Assuming that nato troops are in Afghanistan to help us means so little, what a farce of cooperation,France is not wanting to get caught with its hand in the cookie jar while appearing to be helping.
We should actually identify FRIEND or FOES and then treat them like it.

KeithJoy! How much of Iraq was searched by the inspectors? Did it even add up to 1%?
If something like this can be missed for 2 years in Afghanistan, what could someone be hiding in Iraq?
Well said Gary, not to mention the fact that Saddam had a shit-load of yellowcake at his disposal, as well as the bio-chem weapons experts (not to mention all of the US hating islamic toilets surrounding Iraq, that would happily stash any weapons for Saddam).
But I guess maybe we should have waited for Saddam to nuke Washinton DC, or London before we attacked him.
This kind of info makes for good political hay for President Bush when it comes to weapons of mass destruction not being found in Iraq.
Here we have major stock piles of serious weapons systems that have to take up hundreds of acres and we are just coming across it now.
What`s with this French Major??? I have to believe there will be more to this story soon.
Additional information from the Toronto Sun article:
The French major was clearly bluffing, hadn't checked the bunkers and got a classic Canadian roasting from Maj. Hynes -- who was supported by a German general who was also appalled at the laxity.
"Now we've stirred up the hornet's nest," grinned Maj. Hynes. "Good. Now we may get some action."
Being from Canada, I can say this. Our liberal government here has left our military to rot when it comes to getting them the latest toys. Their training, however, is a different story. I agree with mackie's comments about this being good for Bush and the fact that they have found little in Iraq. If you can have a cache of that magnitude just outside of Kabul, what about in the boondocks of Northern Iraq. I still think they might find something in Iraq.
OH!MY!
Fun for today

Arafat Backs Kerry; Israelis Favor Bush
Patrick Goodenough, CNSNews.com
Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004
Under a Kerry administration, however, "it would be likely that several staff members during Clinton's administration would return," Shaath said. "That would be a good thing, but it could take at least a year before a policy is formulated."
DO YOU THINK HE IS TALKING ABOUT SANDY BERGER [PAPERS STUFFED IN PANTS]
Elaborating on the PA's unhappiness with the incumbent, Palestine Media Center, an official PA institution, said Palestinians held the Bush administration responsible for Israel's isolation of Arafat since the end of 2001.
The comments add substance to an assessment in July by Israel's military intelligence chief, Major-General Aharon Ze'evi, who was quoted as telling the cabinet, "Arafat is now waiting for the month of November in the hope that President Bush will be defeated in the presidential election and turned out of his office."
The PA's view on the election contrasts sharply with that of Israeli leaders, who have echoed the words spoken by former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in Washington in 2002: "There has never been a greater friend of Israel in the White House than President George W. Bush."
Last week, in a coordinated survey of opinions in 10 key countries in Europe, Asia and North America, Israel was one of only two countries - the other was Russia - where poll respondents favored Bush over Kerry (by 50 percentage points to 24).

Vietnamese Americans mostly ignore 'war hero' Kerry, support Bush
AFP: 10/16/2004
FALLS CHURCH, Virginia, Oct 17 (AFP) - White House aspirant John Kerry is hailed by his Democratic Party as a Vietnam War hero but the senator is waging an uphill battle convincing 1.5 million Vietnamese Americans to vote for him.
Many of them are expected to vote for incumbent George W. Bush in the November 2 presidential polls because decorated naval officer Kerry returned from combat to denounce the United States for going to war against then communist North Vietnam, community leaders say.
Another reason Vietnamese Americans are reluctant to vote for Kerry, who spent four months in South Vietnam, is that he blocked legislation intended to force the current communist government in Vietnam to stop human rights abuses.
