Given the disproportionate contribution made by French Jews to the country's economy and tax base (so the State can then build more mosques and madrassas and dole out the balance to Muslims living in the ghettos around Paris) and the effort by the French government to undermine Israel's security at every opportunity, one wonders whether perhaps Chirac has a fantasy of seeing Israel overrun by Arab armies and offering the surviving Jews "safe harbour" in France.

Where would the Islamic Republic of Iran be today if France had not offered refuge and protection to the Ayatollah Khomeini in Neauphle-le-chateau? And think of all those Iranian dissidents rounded up, or otherwise supressed, by the Deuxieme Bureau or Defense du Territoire or whatever it's called, in order to curry favor with that same Islamic Republic of Iran? Where was it that Bakhtiar was stabbed to death -- Shahpour Bakhtiar, who had been in the French Resistance, the last prime minister under the Shah? For his service to France, the French paid him back handsomely, by failing to protect him when the killers came to slit his throat and that of his assistant, and then decapitate him. It was not as if they had not been forewarned -- months before Bakhtiar's previous assistant had been murdered on a Parisian street.

So the French paid him back by failing to protect him. And they routinely break up Iranian resistance groups in order to keep those contracts going. Money, money, money. Was it the same kind of pressure, from Arabs, that made Le Monde take Peroncel-Hugoz off coverage of the Muslim world, because his book Le radeau de Mahomet showed too much understanding?

Nothing more about France need be said except the obvious: Sois-belle et tais-toi. Look around your country, and see what you have done to yourselves, and think ahead 10, 20, 30 years. Just who, in the Western world, has been foolish?

I agree with everyone here. Arafat has done more to generate hatred and discord in the Middle East than anyone in the region, starting in the 1960's. He has succeeded in convincing men, women, and children to strap explosives on themselves and detonate blow themselves up in hopes to kill innocent civilians. The coward Arafat set these people out in front while he sits back getting fat and rich with his terrorist activities. Beyond any doubt, he is a terrorist of the worst kind. The rest of the cowardly Arabs will be content to have Arafat out in front to take the hammering while they cheer and support him with the hatred spread by Arafat. Arafat has installed enough hatred in the Middle East to ensure total destruction of the whole region. And now it turns out - as your link reveals -that it was all a scam, a FAKE - a cynical deception carried out with the collusion of a French TV station.

Why aren't all the TV stations that carried this footage 4 years ago rushing to admit that they were taken in, that they broadcast flagrant propaganda as hard news? The BBC for instance? I wonder why not.

This revelation is surprising. But not THAT surprising when one recalls previous deceptions along similar lines...the 'Serbian' snipers who shot civilans in Sarajevo and turned out to be Bornians targetting their own people... the civilians lining up for water in Sarajevo who were blasted to pieces by mortars fired by the 'Serbs' - even the UN had to admit after a protracted investigation that it was really the Bosnians blowing up their own people so they could blame it on the Serbs...

The same deception again when people lining up for bread were blown to smithereens...And the alleged cold-blooded massacre of Kosovan civilians by the Serbs which prompted Clinton to bomb the Serbian army. Except that that the 'civilians' turned out to be members of the KLA, killed in combat, stripped of their uniforms and tricked out as civilans.

Each of these atrocities in turn was front-page news around the world, and condemnation rained down on the heads of the alleged 'perpetrators' (as well as bombs in the case of the luckless Serbs.)

A pity that the media are not as quick to 'fess up that they were taken in by these cynical deceptions.

Part of the problem, I suppose, is that we in the west still find it hard to believe - even after the facts have been fully presented - that there are people out there so diabolically cruel and heartless that they're willing to shoot and massacre their own people for the sake of a momentary propaganda advantage.

if I were in the same position and wanted to protect my child, wouldnt it be better to lie with your whole body over him, sheltering him against the wall while you stayed between him and the bullets?

It seemed to me that the father was actually using the child for his own protection. My husband, who grew up in a similar situation to the one in Israel, agreed with my conclusion.

I wonder how many people saw it that way.

I have often wandered if there is a swedish syndrome that takes over, perhaps after a while, when journalists congrgate in these trouble spots. life is easier when you collaborate and ensures safety.
In the end you end up with a bunch of devil's advocates who espoese the ideals of the terrorists.
I recently met a bosnian serb refugee, an ex footballer. When i told him that i saw the Balkan conflict as an unrecognised and disguised Islamic Jihad, he almost kissed me!
He proceeded to tell me of the Horrors that he had witnessed commited by muslim jihadists.
None were ever reported on the western press.
All we ever got was Srebenica in the same way that all we got was Shatilla from the western press.
Even today, the reaction of many, when he reveals he is a serb, is one of disgust at meeting a pariah of society.

Actually, Tziona is correct. Saudi Arabia does have a couple of world class hospitals - staffed primarily by Western doctors and Phillipino nurses. Still, those who can afford it, go to the West.

So we are witnessing a new effect. Probably a cousin of the swedish syndrome, where hostages for reasons of survival, actually espouse the causes of their own captors. This does not happen at first but is the result of long term exposure.
pehaps it starts as a small lie to curry favour and establish ones credentials "for the cause".
In ramallah i read of the Italian journalist who wired the pictures of the palestinians, their hands covered with the blood of the two Israelis thay had just butchered, and because he had only just arrived and did not realise that the reporting of any news detrimental to the pals was absolutely forbidden, he was spared execution.
I suggest that this effect is one that affects foreign journalists , who already hold left wing views and become more radical the longer they stay in these ares of conflict.
Ultimately they become mouth pieces or apologists for those terrorist groups such as Al ZAqwari's murderers.
