The bodies of about 50 unarmed Iraqi soldiers -- many killed execution style with gunshots to the back of the head -- were found on a remote road in eastern Iraq, victims of an ambush as they were heading home on leave after basic training, Iraqi authorities said Sunday.The nature of the attack suggested an increased boldness and organization by insurgents, who, until now, have mainly used roadside bombs and suicide car bombs in their attacks on the Iraqi military and police.
Interior Ministry spokesman Adnan Abdul-Rahman said the victims were believed to have been killed about sundown Saturday on a road about 95 miles east of Baghdad near the Iranian border.
Police offered varying accounts of the incident, with one source saying all the victims were shot in the back of the head. Some of the victims had their hands crossed behind their heads, said Lt. Ali Jawad Kadhim from the nearby Mandali police station.
Photos from the site showed the outstretched bodies laid out in formation, some charred, others bloodied. Many had their arms at their sides.

Something stinks about this!!! I heard on BBC News 24 this morning that it was an inside job (in other words; someone inside the Iraqi interim government betrayed these recruits to the insurgency }I still hate using that description).
Personally I agree, I think they were set up, but the way in which they were executed tells the perps were a lot more organized than the insane suicidalists, and head-hackers -- Forcing them to kneel, and popping caps into their skulls just isn't their style.
Also,something about this scenario suggests that the victims were of some importance.

I put it to you that the only way to deal with terrorists and governments that support them is to Strike and Leave. We don’t have the resources or the national will to in essence “run another country” by occupying them and setting up alternative governments. It is the duty of nation’s people to rise up and govern themselves properly. If the damn UN wants to hold these people’s hand’s as they try to drag themselves up from the Middle Ages then fine. The USA needs to concentrate our limited resources on denying the terrorists funds, supplies, training, and access not life support for a country that was stupid enough to support terrorism and not smart to expel them from their midst now.

Over the weekend, (relaying “The New York Times”) came news here of “senior US officials” raising their estimate of the total quantity of “insurgents” in Iraq (pop: c20 million) today from an earlier approximation of between 2,000 and 7 or 8,000, up to an aggregate of 12,000 to 20,000.
“The Sydney Morning Herald” headed its piece on this report, “Guerillas’ resources shock Pentagon”, while in its story, “The Australian” called the assessment, “alarming”.
On top, amounts in the BILLIONS were said to be available to the insurrectionists, whose maximum number of 20,000 (by these American officials’ best guess) incorporates the sum of ALL the many, disparate groups and gangs and militias in the country - whether Shi’ites, Sunnis, Jihadis, Saddamists, Iraqis, non-Iraqis, tribesmen, criminals, thugs, psychos, etc - all in TOGETHER.
Aside from the vexed item of the Shi’a, these US officials’ approach, for this count, is perfectly sound and proper. Beyond the NECESSARY DIFFERENTIATION, in Iraq, of Sunnite from Shi’a, bothering to distinguish Baathists from Jihadis, “socialists” from “holy warriors”, during the period since bin-Laden’s decree, has become a purely academic exercise. IN PRACTICE, the “secularist” and the Islamist gunmen, Iraqi and foreign, have increasingly been working in cahoots, against their common foe, the Coalition, sometimes conniving in collusion, others in competition.
In the field, “on the ground”, they’ve CONVERGED, overlapping their ideologies with ease. Their main, REAL divergence is that the “secularist” fascist terrorists get their money out of hoards which Saddam’d previously stashed in Syria, whereas the rabid Islamist killers get theirs from chiefly Saudi- & UAE-endowed coffers - again, in Syria. (Iran gives the Shi’ites theirs.)
The Prototype for this co-operation in Iraq is the “Palestinians”’ “National & Islamic Forces Front”, functionally their paramilitary centre for active, tactical co-ordination of personnel, intelligence, training, logistics, planning, arms, cash, communications & so forth, in their terror-war on Israel The “Front” COMBINES all the terrorist factions of the PLO (including the PFLP, which quit the PLO in the ‘90s) with Hamas and Jihad Islami, plus “Palestinian” Hezbollah and el-Qaeda spin-offs. Effectively, it’s the PA’s equivalent of a “Joint High Command”.
In the Iraq theatre of the “War on Terror” (WWIV!), it could be best, first, to treat the Shi’ite Khomeinists SEPARATELY from the Sunnis’ “resistance to occupation”. Hope of settling the problems of the Shi’a in Iraq (where they make up at least 60% of the citizenry) concomitantly entails the USA resolving FURTHER difficulties - old and new - with adjoining IRAN.
As for the Sunnite terrorists, it’s no longer material now if they’re fired up by “religious” or by “political” dogma - they’re all Islamo-fascists, of one murderous stripe or another, to be captured (and grilled), or killed.
