How does Ramadan play out in Turkey? In Saudi Arabia, anyone caught eating, drinking, or smoking is jailed and flogged. Muslims are still required to come to work but only for five hours each day (many, especially the Saudis, don't bother to come in at all). Non-muslims must work a full schedule. I always felt badly for the non-Muslims from countries like the Philippines and Thailand because they often had to work outdoors in the searing desert heat all day without water or food. It seemed that the whole country would go on night shift, with shops and restaurants open until the early pre-dawn hours while their patrons binged. Any Saudis who did come into the office during the day often dozed off from being up all night.

What does not eating or drinking during daytime and binging before and after, do to the body? Are there any problems associated with doing this?

Anyone who has ever flown on Saudi Arabian Airlines 747s will remember the ceiling mounted "Mecca pointers" over the aisles. They light up when it is "prayer time". Many of the faithful get up from their seats and crowd into the few open spaces on the aircraft like the areas in front of the doors and galleys to prostrate themselves.

The "Mecca pointers" are slaved to the aircraft compass system with an offset dial on the flight engineer's panel that is used to manually slew the pointers toward Mecca. Many of the flight crews are entirely composed of Europeans and Americans. As a coping mechanism, it was standard practice to slew these pointers toward Jerusalem when there were no Saudi pilots assigned to the trip.

The cabin crews were constantly hounded by the passengers wanting to know when prayer times would be during the flight. Of course when you're flying 600 knots at 35,000 feet, that depends. On an Air France trip I once flew over the pole on a ground track that actually caught up with the sun and watched it rise in the west. On the Saudi flights I'll bet that would conjur up visions of jinns for millions of the faithful. It was particularly amusing to watch them fidget during Ramadan on west bound trips into the sun that refused to set.

I think the answer is pretty self-evident. It produces a significant number of very disturbed people who commit acts of incredible violence in pursuit of supposed peace that is supposed to come when the whole world is dar-al-Islam.

At a minimum, ask any shift worker what kind of havoc it plays with their bodies when they switch shifts, particularly their ability to sleep. And likewise, the refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours and indulging after dark falls. It would do all sorts of things to your metabolism and blood sugar levels, etc.

In Saudi Arabia, during Ramadan, practically nothing gets done in the government offices mostly because those who do come in are catching up on their sleep. And it is REALLY dangerous to drive because of all the semi-comatose drivers on the road in the morning.

Serb Boycott Confirms Kosovo Still Divided

PRISTINA, Serbia-Montenegro (AP) -- A Serb boycott of Kosovo's second general election confirmed lingering divisions in the U.N.-run province, and partial results from a monitoring group indicated that the political landscape will likely remain unchanged.
The elections on Saturday were overshadowed by the refusal of the vast majority of Serbs to vote in ethnic-Albanian-dominated Kosovo, dealing a blow to international efforts to forge a multiethnic society.
Most Serbs stayed away from polls as part of a boycott called by Serb leaders in Kosovo and Serbia, who say the United Nations and NATO have failed to create an environment where Serbs can live without fear.
Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said the Serb boycott reflects the despair of the province's Serbs.
With their boycott, Kosovo's Serbs made a stand to refuse the only right given to them in Kosovo, the right to vote," Kostunica said in a statement.
Preliminary results weren't expected until Monday, and final results were expected a week later. Kosovo's President, Ibrahim Rugova, declared victory Sunday, claiming his party garnered more than 50 percent of the vote, retaining its position as the major party in Kosovo.
Rugova said the elections demonstrated "the commitment of Kosovars to strengthening an independent country and a democratic society" and again called for the province's independence.
Officials did not specify how many Serbs cast ballots Saturday but said their turnout was very low. Overall turnout was estimated at 53 percent.
Kosovo's ethnic Albanians - who make up 90 percent of Kosovo's 2 million people - viewed Saturday's elections as a means to further their goal of securing independence. Kosovo Serbs and Belgrade want the province to remain part of Serbia-Montenegro, the successor union to Yugoslavia.
But there appeared to be disenchantment also in the ranks of ethnic Albanians unhappy with the progress made in the province since the end of the war, because international and local officials have failed to address the dire economic situation.
The election came seven months after mobs of ethnic Albanians attacked Serbs and their property in riots that killed 19 people and injured more than 900. The violence was the worst since the 1998-99 Kosovo war.
In New York, the office of U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan issued a statement congratulating the people of Kosovo on the elections.
"The turnout and good management of the electoral process, for the first time by the Kosovans themselves, demonstrates their understanding of the importance of making their voices heard," the statement read.
Kosovo's biggest party, the Democratic League of Kosovo, led by Rugova, appeared to capture 47 percent of the vote, said Ibrahim Makolli from the Pristina-based Council for the Defense of Human Rights and Freedoms.
The group said the Democratic Party of Kosovo came second with 27 percent, followed by the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo with 8 percent. Both parties are led by former rebel leaders.
Kosovo was placed under U.N. and NATO rule in 1999 after the alliance's air war ended former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on independence-minded ethnic Albanians. The 1998-99 war killed an estimated 10,000 people, mainly ethnic Albanians.

Old jihadist roots die hard. On the Black Sea coast, Trabzon (Trapezus) was one of the last refuges of the indigenous Byzantine Christian Greeks of Asia Minor. The 'secular' post-Ottoman Turkish government eliminated the Christian presence in one of many forced population 'exchanges' with Greece.

As in any muslim dominant society, the remaining Christian minorities live in a climate of fear and insecurity. The Christian Greeks of Turkey dare not exercise their rights or express their ancient culture. That is evidenced by the recent harrasment of the Greek patriachate in tourist-center Istanbul.

This is the same country that the EU can't wait to 'integrate', against the wishes of the majority of Europeans. It's worth noting the the U.S. government (including president Bush himself) strongly support Turkey's entry into the EU.

Militant islam (any other varieties?) is alive and well in Turkey.

Prince Charles was in Turkey today re-opening the British Consulate in Istanbul, which was blown up by local Islamists with the loss of 14 lives, including the Consul-General and his assistant.

I heard him on the radio saying: "Far from sowing division between us, those who planned these murderous attacks simply brought us together - Briton and Turk, Muslim, Jew and Christian."

French Drop Anti-Semitism Awareness Plan

PARIS (AP) -- A Jewish group said Sunday it plans to "modify" its publicity campaign to fight anti-Semitism that showed an image of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary with the slur "Dirty Jew" scrawled across it to mimic graffiti after it drew negative reactions.
"Faced with the reactions to this campaign against anti-Semitism, the Union of Jewish Students of France has decided to modify the visuals," the group said in a statement.
The advertisements were due to be published in French newspapers this week. Last week newspapers ran articles previewing the ads, which were designed to shock and draw attention to France's ongoing battle against anti-Semitism.
"We have to accept that something strong is needed today to fight against anti-Semitism," Yonathan Arfi, the group's president, said. "And we thought these advertisements were good. We thought they were strong."

Arfi said that "reaction came from everywhere" and eclipsed the goal of the campaign, which was not to spark anger or show disrespect for Catholicism.
France has the largest populations of Jews and Muslims in western Europe and has suffered a rising tide of anti-Semitic crime since 2000, when tensions between Israelis and Palestinians worsened in the Middle East.
