Masked men torched a Roman Catholic church in Zanzibar over the weekend, the third such attack in a week in the predominantly Muslim Indian Ocean archipelago, a church leader said on Monday.Suspicions fell on Islamic extremists, highlighting rising Islamic militancy and growing political tensions as Zanzibar prepares for what is expected to be its most hotly contested presidential and legislative elections since the violent overthrow of the Omani Sultan in 1964.
Reverend Vincent Shiyo, a Roman Catholic priest, said four masked men torched his church on Saturday night in Mchangani, 15km from the centre of Unguja, the main island in the semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania.
No one was injured in the attack that destroyed the outreach parish church, Shiyo said.
The attack occurred three days after unknown assailants set fire to a Lutheran church and demolished the wall of another Roman Catholic church.
Police are investigating the attacks, but no one has been arrested, regional police chief Hamad Issa said.
"What is sad is that there is no official condemnation of the attacks," Shiyo said. "Both the police and government officials appear reluctant to condemn attacks on Christians."
In April, three Roman Catholic churches and a school van were attacked with explosive devices in Zanzibar.
In the same month, suspected Islamic militants set off explosive devices targeting a local pub, homes of government officials and Christian and pro-government Muslim leaders.
"The Muslim fundamentalists are angry at the social services that the church extends to all without discrimination," Shiyo said.

Is it Christian to lay down and die without a word of protest or the raising of an arm in self defence ?
Some response from the Pope? maybe a word or two from one of his minions.
The lack of response to these ongoing attacks from islamic groups, the destruction of whole communities of Christians, the slaughter, the fleeing - how many years must it go on, how many hundreds of thousands of people have to be slaughtered before there is a response from Christian organizations and countries.
What is it i, obviously, do not understand ?
What I don't understand is how it is allowed to mhappen to christians without a breath of anger or condemnation towards islamic terrorists/jihadists, but you know sure as the sky is blue, if anyone so much as chipped a crumb from a stinking mosk, there'd be hell to pay.
I really don't care about muslims dying anymore, in fact I'm glad they are, I'm happy, I cheer every time I learn another muslim is dead, because they have absolutely no respect for human life (even their own), or tolerance for other cultures. I hope they all die, in pain....now.
Lets start demolishing their worthless buildings, clear the world up a little.

Zanzibar, again in the news, and once the holding-pen for all the Arab slavers who brought their black Africans, by slave coffle from the hinterland, by dhow from raiding parties up and down the coast, to Zanzibar and Pemba, from whence they could be shipped to supply the Muslim slave markets of Cairo, Damascus, Baghdad, Istanbul.
The British stamped out, for a while, the Arab slave trade, that trade which began far earlier, and lasted far longer, and was on a far wider scale, than the Atlantic slave trade -- but that for reasons that need to be pondered has gotten almost no attention from the world. And certainly there never was an Arab or Muslim anti-slavery movement. How could there be? Muhammad had slaves. Slavery is recognized in the Qur'an. Not a month goes by without some imam issuing a fatwa or uttering a khutba (sermon) in Saudi Arabia insisting that slavery is, according to Islam, perfectly legitimate. When Moqtada al-Sadr even suggests to his followers that they should "enslave" captured non-Muslim females, he means that literally, not figuratively.
Black slaves are still bought and sold in Mali, Mauritania, Sudan. Slavery was formally outlawed in Saudi Arabia in the early 1950s, but a sister of the King protested, and a great many rich Saudis continue to engage in the practice -- though these foreign "servants" are not called slaves. They can be traded, as recent ads in Saudi newspapers demonstrate, for other kinds of property. One recent ad offered to trade a late-model used American car for an "Indian girl" or equivalent. Slavery is part of Islam.
Indeed, Patricia Crone has written a book on "The Slave-Soldiers of Islam." And even unto the last decades of Ottoman rule, the devshirme, the involuntary levy of what were essentially Christian children snatched from their homes to fill, as military slaves, the Padishah's army, continued until Western pressure, not self-generated inhibitions, and greater hostility among the Christian Europeans under Ottoman rule, stopped the practice.
