PARIS, Oct 22 (AFP) - Intelligence agents have identified the first French national known to have been killed fighting with the insurgency against US forces in Iraq, officials said Friday.The 19-year-old, named as Redouane El Hakim, is believed to have travelled to Iraq via Syria at the start of the year and been killed in a US bombardment on Fallujah in July.
Officials close to the case, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Hakim was one of several French citizens of Muslim background who have gone to Iraq to fight along insurgents there.
"It's difficult to estimate their number, but there mustn't be more than around 10 or so," one official said.
So far. After all, what is stopping them in France from recruiting and increasing their numbers?

Hundreds of young militant Muslim men have left Europe to fight in Iraq, according to senior counterterrorism officials in four European countries. They have been recruited through mosques, Muslim centers and militant Web sites by several groups, including Ansar al-Islam, the Kurdish terrorist group once based in northern Iraq.
A network of recruiters for Iraq first appeared in Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Norway within months of the United States-led invasion, officials said. Some officials said the recruitment effort had now spread to other countries in Europe, including Belgium and Switzerland. The network provides forged documents, financing, training and information about infiltration routes into the country.
This NYT begs the qustion that if a couple newspaper reporters can gather enough intelligence information to publish an article about jihadi recruiting from mosques all over Europe then why is it still going on? Must we assume that the jihadi ideology is more acceptable, more mainstream among European Muslims than we are led to believe?
When you couple stories like this about mostly unfettered European jihadis with that egregious Guardian piece advocating assassination of the President you gotta' wonder which side people are on.

These reports of the attraction of jihadis to Iraq from all over the Muhamedan world are demonstrating that the "honeypot" doctrine is working. The jihadis are compelled by their own ideology to respond to the American military presence in the one-time capital of the defunct Islamic empire. The Americans didn't invent the rule, Mohamed did in the 7th century.
Of course the Americans could have set up their jihadi honeypot in Afghanistan but they took notes during the 1980s while the Russians got pranged in the mountains and Pentagon planners knew that repeating the experience would not be very clever. So instead, they decided to plant the Stars & Stripes in the heart of the seat of the arab caliphate itself, poked the jihadis in the eye, and announced that they are here to stay. Thus they issued an invitation to jihadis around the world to come to Baghdad to fulfill their destiny. Like President Bush keeps saying, "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here".
This doctrine is straight out of Clausewitz and Sun Tzu. The terrain in Iraq, whether it be the hard-pan desert or the primative mud and cinderblock urban settings, is an American general's dreamscape.
Another analogy is that of a horse twitch. It is a stick with a loop of string on the end that is used to secure the lip of a horse. You put the horse's lip through the loop and then twist it until you have the horse's full and undivided attention. It is used to subdue the animal during painful or difficult vet procedures or for shoeing. So think of Iraq as the jihad twitch for Muslims around the globe. As long as their ummah lip is in the twisted loop, we've got them right where we want them, and we can do this for a very, very, long time.

I sure would love it if your hypothesis turned out to be true; if they did all this stuff on purpose--the failure to secure the borders, allowing the oil pipelines to be blown up, etc.--as a means of enticing the cockroaches into a trap, then the situation goes from being a fiasco to a coup!

It would be better to identify these jihadists, no matter what country they lived in or were citizens of as Moslems. "Muslim background" seems to indicate that his allegiance to Mohammedanism was incidental. It was not; it was his raison d'etre, what brought him to Iraq to kill infidels.
