Prince Turki says that modern terrorism comes from unfair British policies in the Middle East dating back to World War I. From Arab News, with thanks to Kemaste:
JEDDAH, 6 October 2004 — Saudi Ambassador in London Prince Turki Al-Faisal in a forthright speech during the Conservative Party’s annual conference, linked the sources of current terrorism to a disaffection and “sense of injustice that can be traced back to the World War I.”Quoting Lord Crewe who said, “What we want is not a united Arabia, but a weak and disunited Arabia, split into little principalities as far as possible under our suzerainty — but incapable of coordinated action against us.”
Prince Turki described the division of the Middle East among the Western powers as like “portioning out cake”.
He pointed out that both then as now, Britain was playing a key role in “two of the most turbulent regions in the Middle East — the Palestinian territories and Iraq”, and that the British made promises of “fair play” to the indigenous Arabs in Palestine and promised a brighter future to the people of Iraq.
The British government, Prince Turki said, viewed with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, “but on one clear understanding, and I quote, ‘that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.’
“That promise was broken and has continued to be broken by the West. As I see it there a direct link between the events of yesterday and the terrible realities we face today.”
Turki didn't address how this British unfairness has given rise to jihad terrorism in Indonesia, or the Philippines, or Thailand, or Kashmir, or Nigeria, or Chechnya, or anywhere else where it appears today around the globe in regions thousands of miles removed from Israel. Nor did he explain the Islamic terrorists' consistent and thoroughgoing use of jihad terminology, and how their struggle relates to that of the great Islamic empires of the past, which invaded and conquered numerous regions in aggressive wars based on the same ideology.
Does he really think that if the West abandons Israel, terrorism will cease? Tell them that in Bali, and Mindanao, and southern Thailand.

Actually, Non-Jewish citizens of the State of Israel comprise about 20% of the population (They are Arabs, Druse, some Christians). They are NOT second class citizens, they have full rights including their own political parties in the Parliament (Knesset).

Why is there no civil marraige in Israel and no recognition of marraiges where one partner is not Jewish? Why are Arabs permitted to sell land to Jews, but Jews forbidden to sell land to Arabs? Why are there Jews only neighbourhoods? Why did an Israeli company make immigrant workers sign a contract banning them from sexual relations with Jews, under threat of deportation? It seems that the British must be omnipotent as they are able to dictate Middle East policy long after their empire has collapsed. How is this possible? The flag of Britain is based on the shield of our patron Britania, her round shield is the Zodiac Wheel, a circle divided into 12 parts with a central axis. It can apply to all people, not just Britain, unlike the hexagram and candlestick which is thought of in the minds of many as representing only Jews and only Jews. As for Muslims the Crescent moon and Venus (two brightest objects in the night sky) are represented on many of their flags, but astrological symbols are not sectarian, anymore than the stars of Aus/NZ flags are sectarian. In fact some Muslims object to the crescent on Mosques and flags, as it was a symbol used on many ancient coins, in Rome for example. The hexagram itself is also an astrological symbol, but has come to be associated with Jews after being adopted by the Rothschilds. The chevron used on American military uniforms and vehicles to denote rank is also derived from the hexagram and is interpreted by the subconscience as a hexagram.
Everything a poster above has said is either false, or ludicrous (the remark about "non-Jewish" symbols, etc.) Israel offers full civil rights to all its citizens, including Arabs. Everyone has precisely the same rights to buy and sell land. Everyone has the same right to vote, and everyone knows that there are Arabs in the Knesset. The second official language of Israel is Arabic, and it is widely taught, and is on all signs. Indeed, the Arabs in Israel have a standard of living far higher than that of Arabs elsewhere, and a freedom of expression that Arabs possess nowhere in any Arab country.
One might contrast this with the position of the Berbers, who have repeatedly had to riot in Algeria, in Tizi-Ouzou and elsewhere, merely for the right to use the Berber language. One might note the perilous situaation of the Copts, subject to intermittent persecution, including murder by officials and unofficial Muslim avengers, in Egypt -- the country where they, the Copts, are the indigenes, and Muslims the invaders. One might note the signs -- "Muslim" and "Non-Muslim" -- that carefully divide the population everywhere in Saudi Arabia. But of course that same division that is visible in the signs in Saudi Arabia, is invisible, but palpable, in the minds of every Muslim who takes his religion seriously: the division of the world that counts is that between Believer and Infidel. And no matter how kind that Infidel may be, he is to be mistrusted, even hated (look at those American soldiers building schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, electricity grids, repairing oil wells, throughout Iraq – and for their pains being attacked, and their attackers supported or regarded with bland indifference by other Iraqis), And a Muslim, no matter how awful his behavior, is still a Muslim and must be supported – which is why, of course, there was not a syllable of protest from the Arab League when Arabs suppressed Berbers in Algeria, or massacred non-Arab Kurds in Iraq, or killed Christians and animists in southern Sudan, or are now killing non-Arab Muslims in Darfur. Islam trumps, and after Islam, Arab Islam, for islamization has always been a vehicle of the most successful imperialism – as V. S. Naipaul acutely called it – in history, Arab imperialism.
The Israelis do distinguish in one respect – and it may be a distinction that the armies of Western Europe will have to start making. They do not draft Arabs; volunteers, such as the members of the Druse sect, are taken. In the armies of Britain, France, Italy, Germany, or in the security services, or even in the police, it is going to become harder and harder to distinguish the vast mass of Muslims, whose loyalty cannot be to the Infidel nation-state (it cannot be because that would violate the essential teachings of Islam itself – it is hard enough to get Muslims to owe loyalty even to a Muslim nation-state, given that all loyalty is to be reserved for the umma al-islamiyya), from the very small group who can be trusted, and in the end, if it proves impossible, Muslims may simply have to be barred from such service where the security of Infidels is at stake.
The remarks by the poster above bear a remarkable resemblance, in spirit, to the outrage expressed by Hitler in his famous speeches on the Sudetenland, on the “cruelty” and “injustice” of how those wretched Czechs were treating those poor “Sudeteners” (Hitler stressed that identity – not Deutschtum – for the benefit of foreign audiences) with their “legitimate demands for self-determination.” And so on, and so obviously and dreary forth.
Karl: Every country has the right to determine its own marriage laws and other social relations. No Muslim state, for example, allows Jews to vote, hold office, own property, build a new synagogue, etc; No Muslim state allows equal rights for Jews and most do not allow Jews to live there at all. Indeed, Jews have been ethnically cleansed from most of the Muslim world.
Muslims have more rights in Israel, including the right to vote, than Jews have anywhere in the Muslim world. It is Muslims who are racist, not Jews.

Everything Hugh stated is true. Arabs have better treatment in Israel then in Arab countries and are better educated. Homosexuals aren't thrown off cliffs in Israel and much to Arab chagrin their women not only drive, they have more freedom and their babies have a lower death rate. Why do Palestinians prefer Israeli doctors and hospitals to Palestinian doctors and hospitals?
Do you think Israeli Arabs want to give up their Israeli passport and live under the thuggery, danger and uncertainty of the PLO? There are many Israeli Arabs who do not want Jerusalem divided because they are all too familiar with the mob tactics of the PLO.
And while we're on the topic, why has the Christian Palestinian population gone from 80% to 20% in Bethlehem? Because of Palestinian Arab intimidation, beatings, rape and murder. They are running for their lives. Subsequently tourism has suffered because of it. When I was in Israel we weren't allowed to travel to Bethlehem because it wasn't safe. Palestinians have practically turned it into a dump because they do not respect others holy sites -- look what they did to Joseph's Tomb!
The reason why it bothers me is that Saudi Arabia has never claimed to be part of "the West", Israel has, despite the fact it has nothing in common with America or Europe, when Israel commits genocide in the name of "the West" then it inflames Muslim endangers the citizens of The West.

Long-lasting nose drop vaccine for the flu
An Israeli team of scientists has successfully tested in mice a revolutionary nose drop vaccine for influenza which promises to protect people of all ages for five years against all present and future strains of the flu. The patented vaccine — developed by startup BiondVax — has completed successful laboratory testing on mice and is now securing funds for clinical tests on humans. The vaccine is based on 20 years of research by Weizmann Institute of Science Professor Ruth Arnon.
Israeli team programs DNA nano-computer to identify and fight cancer cells
The world's smallest computer — which was developed last year by Israeli scientists — has been successfully programmed to fight cancer. The computer identifies changes in molecules that indicate the presence of certain cancers, diagnoses the type of cancer, and then produces a drug molecule to fight the cancer. Researchers from Israel's Weizmann Institute have developed the prototype biological computer that identifies and diagnoses cancerous cells and then releases medication to destroy them. The results of the team's research has been published in Nature and were presented last week by team leader Prof. Ehud Shapiro at a Brussels symposium 'Life, a Nobel Story,' in which Nobel Laureates and others addressed the future of the life sciences.
Israeli device redefines colonoscopy
Sightline, a Haifa-based start-up, has developed a new device called the ColonoSight, which could make a colonoscopy a much easier experience for both the patient, and the doctor. For patients, one of the biggest problems with existing colonoscopy methods is that they require a doctor to use force to push the scope from behind. This is uncomfortable, and can sometimes damage or perforate the colon. The ColonoSight, however, uses air pressure assisted pull technology to pull the scope into the colon. The forward force of the device is generated by a pneumatic mechanism just below the tip of the scope. This force draws the scope in, and the operator then navigates with the handles, drastically reducing the need to push from the back. Aside from making the procedure safer, it also reduces the amount of local anesthetic required.
Early-stage SARS diagnosis kit
An Israeli company is close to completing the first kit that can diagnose SARS at an early stage. This breakthrough will help medical workers and officials control the spread of the highly contagious disease: the earlier that SARS cases are detected, the faster sufferers can be quarantined and their environs protected. BioShaf, a biological startup near Haifa, has completed Phase I trials of the kit, which is designed to detect early-stage infection by the corona virus that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. The trials encompassed blood samples from hundreds of patients, and rated the kits as being 97.6% effective.
Israeli device increases efficiency of lung biopsies using bronchoscopes
Every year, roughly three million people worldwide face the ordeal of undergoing a lung biopsy. Usually doctors perform the procedure using bronchoscopes - instruments that are snaked into the lungs that carry tiny cameras and surgical tools. Now, an Israeli company has provided a solution to this problem by developing a system for visually tracking the locations of bronchoscopes used in lung biopsies. The image-processing and guidance technology, called the superDimension/Bronchus was patented last year by superDimension of Herzliya, Israel, and could allow the use of bronchoscopes in far more lung biopsies.
Israeli team uses biological 'scaffolding' to produce healthy heart cells
One of the greatest roadblocks in helping heart attack victims fully recuperate and rehabilitate is the amount of heart tissue that dies as a result of the trauma — a condition that leaves the patients vulnerable to future heart failure. But this problem may be on its way to finding a solution, thanks to an Israeli research team. The team recently created a biological "scaffold" that — in pigs — allows healthy injectable heart muscle cells to replace tissue that died as a result of a heart attack, through a process known as tissue engineering. The research team was headed by Prof. Smadar Cohen of the department of biotechnology engineering, the department of medical engineering and the Institute for Applied Biosciences, at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Cohen's team has just received an international patent for its pioneering technique of "scaffolding" the tissue.

In 2002, the country's citizens registered 1,046 patents in the US, or 174 per million residents. This figure puts Israel third in the world, behind only the US and Japan, in per capita figures, nearly three times the British number, and quite a bit ahead of Germany.
When taking into account how often Israeli patent applications form the basis for subsequent patent requests abroad, and using actual (rather than per capita) figures, Israel comes out in 13th place even though it has a much smaller population than the 12 leaders.
Why are Israelis so prolific? Hypotheses explaining this achievement are many: Perhaps it derives from skills or genetic traits that promoted Jewish survival over the millennia, mental dexterity from Talmud study or the risk-taking (even reckless) behavior promoted by young people's military experience.
