Tomorrow marks one year of Jihad Watch.
It has been a tumultuous year, and I thank all those who have helped make this samizdat effort take off in so many ways. If I named you all by name, it would make this a very long post; but please know that I am grateful to each of you.
Jihad Watch is dedicated to breaking the media blockade on Islam, and to introducing into the public debate the elements of Islam that give rise to fanaticism and violence, so that both non-Muslims and Muslims can take appropriate action.
It is a small effort, but growing steadily. And it is a samizdat effort because what we say here is not allowed to be said by most major media outlets. Yet it is the truth.
The truth about Islamic radicalism is available now to everyone. They can read books by Bat Ye'or, Ibn Warraq, Serge Trifkovic, and even by me. And there are books by so many others. These authors represent a broad spectrum of approaches and intellectual levels. The problem in America and the West today is not that the truth is not out there. It is that it is still widely ignored. It is consciously and systematically ignored and obfuscated by the media establishment.
If Serge Trifkovic wrote for the New York Times instead of Chronicles, the world would be different. People would know what we were facing, and Jihad Watch might not be necessary. If Ibn Warraq wrote for Simon and Schuster instead of Prometheus Books, people would know. If Bat Ye'or were on NBC and CBS, people would know.
But the media establishment has a virtual stranglehold on getting this information OUT. Instead of being featured and lionized as they deserve, people like Ibn Warraq and Bat Ye'or are smeared or simply ignored. On Monday I was in the Cleveland airport, having a casual conversation with a pilot. He didn't know who I was, and I didn't tell him, but he happened to bring up the subject of Islam. He told me it was a peaceful religion that has been hijacked, that the Bible is just as violent as the Qur'an, etc. Has he ever read the Qur'an? Or Trifkovic? Or Ibn Warraq? Or Bat Ye'or? No. And he certainly hasn't read my books. He was just repeating what the media told him.
There are millions of people like that out there. How to reach them? Jihad Watch is one small, very small, effort to do so. But the larger question of how to break the media stranglehold still preoccupies me. Since it is a willful and conscious rejection of the perspective that we bring on the question of Islam and terrorism, I don't have any idea how to break through it -- except to keep on telling the truth, here, day after day.
Nor is this simply a problem of the liberal control of the major media. Even the "conservatives" O'Reilly and Hannity passed on having me on their shows when my publisher, Regnery, offered them first crack at my book Onward Muslim Soldiers -- although they often do feature Regnery authors. Had they even read my book, or Trifkovic's, or any of Bat Ye'or's? I doubt it. They just figured it was out of the bounds of polite discourse, and that was that.
This is THE problem facing America today: it has become improper and unacceptable to talk honestly about the primary challenge that our nation faces: Islamic terrorism. How will we ever defeat the global jihad if we cannot acknowledge what it is, and where it comes from? Yet this perspective continues to be obfuscated by red herrings: "not all Muslims are terrorists," "all religions can give rise to violence," "you are saying that we must go to war against all Muslims," etc. These caveats are all either untrue or irrelevant, and I have answered them many times here over the past year. Yet they continue to be raised, every day: the Crusades! The IRA! My sweet Muslim neighbor! But how, after all, does the fact that Christians once waged Crusades help us in any way to deal with Islamic jihad today? The government and media establishments continue largely to refuse to acknowledge that there is any problem with Islam itself -- and thus the problem continues to fester for both non-Muslims and Muslims. If you won't admit it's broken, you certainly can't fix it.
So one year of Jihad Watch is complete, and I have signed on for another. The samizdat journalists of the Soviet Union ultimately prevailed; it is not beyond the realm of possibility that we will someday also -- no matter how bleak the situation may seem today.
And once again, I am extremely grateful for all your support and kindness over the past year.

I can only comment for myself. Thank you for the great service that you and many others provide in giving information that can be passed on to others. Keep up the good work and in time we may be able to name the problem correctly. This is truly the biggest threat that we as a country/civilization have ever faced and it is unfortunately one that will be faced for many generations.

I have put friendships at risk by personally breaking the taboo against talking openly about the problems inherent in Islamic teachings. My brother the Islamophile thinks I'm a racist. One can only imagine how much flak you have taken.

Congratulations Mr. Spencer on the one year anniversary of Jihad Watch. Your work is absolutely vital and the mainstream media may yet someday be willing to honestly report the truth of Islam.
Until then, they cannot be relied upon to inform the public and the problem only seems to be getting worse when considering Islamic subversion in the American educational system for example.
There is a way to break the stranglehold the media has on information with regard to Islam and websites like Jihad Watch are doing it, by reporting, educating and honestly addressing the subject of Islam and the very real danger it poses to the future of mankind.

I would also like to express my thanks for the invaluable service you provide. I am as frustrated as anyone about the mainstream media's refusal to approach Islam directly, openly, and honestly. This baffles me because it is suicidal. Their failure to expose Islam is no different than if they knew a pernicious but preventable plague was slowly spreading, but refused to warn the public about it. I do not believe that everyone in the government and media are deluded by the fallacy that Islam is a peaceful "religion", equivalent to Christianity or Judaism. This is simply impossible.
So I can only conclude that a deliberate, concerted campaign to protect our enemies is being conducted, but for the life of me, I don't know why.
The elites who hate Christianity and Western Civilization love everything that Islam hates, so what could they hope to gain by defending the indefensible?

Aggravating how often you get that. I think it's also vanity in a way; people think they're being oh SO fair and tolerant, when they're just being ignorant. It souuds today a lot like "the Germans really do have legitimate grievances..." sounded in 1937.

ABCNEWS obtained the tape from a source in Waziristan, Pakistan over the weekend, sources tells DRUDGE.

"We have been working 24 hours a day trying to authenticate [the tape]," a senior ABCNEWS source said Wednesday morning.
The terrorist's face is concealed by a head dress, and he speaks in an American accent, making it difficult to identify the individual.
US intelligence officials believe the man on tape may be Adam Gadhan - aka Adam Pearlman, a California native who was highlighted by the FBI in May as an individual most likely to be involved in or have knowledge of the next al Qaeda attacks.
According to the FBI, Gadahn, 25, attended al-Qaida training camps and served as an al-Qaida translator.
The disturbing tape runs an hour -- the man simply identifies himself as 'Assam the American.'

One of seven suspected terror suspects named by the FBI on Wednesday has spent time in Tucson.
Yahiye Adam Gadahn grew up in Riverside County, California. But a search on the Internet reveals he also worked in Tucson as a student reporter for a TV news magazine called "EcoNews."
Gadahn helped cover a story on a garbage project at the University of Arizona, but he never attended college.
The FBI says Gadhan did attend Al-Qaida training camps. He and six other suspects may be plotting an attack on the U.S. sometime this summer, according to Attorney General John Ashcroft.
Gadahn was raised in a Christian home but converted to Islam as a teenager. His story of his conversion is on numerous Internet websites. In part, it reads: "Having been around Muslims in my formative years, I knew well that they were not the bloodthirsty, barbaric terrorists that the news media and televangelists paint them to be."
However, Gadahn's beliefs became radical, according to a Muslim cleric who knew him. He was expelled from a mosque in Orange County, California after attacking an employee there.
His family says they last heard from him five years ago, when he was working in Pakistan as a writer and expecting a child.
"My nephew is a very loving, caring young man," says Nancy Pearlman, Gadahn's aunt. "I grew up seeing him regularly and he is a very sweet person. We certainly don't believe in any kind of terrorism, so I'm really shocked by the news."
Gadahn's brother Omar was also shocked, saying the person he knew wasn't radical. "He's a cool brother. He left when I was eight. I didn't really know him that well. He was a lot older than me."

Former U of A Garbogoly Instructor Wilson Hughs says he barely remembers the time he spent being interviewed by Adam Gadahn.
Hughs says, "I have no real recollection of Adam; just him being a nice kid doing an interview".
It's been 10-years since Hughs heard Gadahn's name. "It was unnerving to hear about it," says Hughs. "Adam's life has certainly changed since then".
From a 15-year old interviewing a researcher to becoming a suspected terrorist, the transformation has left his family in shock.
The FBI claims Adam attended Al-Qaida training camps and served as a translator. He's wanted for possible terrorist threats against the U.S. While Adams father says he hasn't seen him in years, his brother says he last heard from Adam a couple of year ago. Omar Gadahn says, "He was in Pakistan Kabul. I think he said writing for a newspaper and that he was going to have a baby".
Gadhan grew up in California and was raised in a Christian home, but converted to Islam as a teenager. His aunt says, "He was raised to be religious, to believe in a God. He was given the opportunity to read the Koran and read the Bible and read, you know, the Torah's part of the Bible. I mean the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Koran. And he made his own choice".
Government officials say intelligence indicates a major terror attack is planned for the U.S. this summer. It's unclear whether Adam Gadahn is part of that alleged plot.

Thank you for this indispensable website. As you have said numerous times, it will be an irreplaceable resource for journalists, scholars, politicians and the general public who seek to have a knowledge of Islam that goes beyond the superficial pablum which is fed to us by the mainstream media and Muslim apologists.
I defy any sane, intelligent person to read the Quran, to study the ahadith, to read the Sirat Rasul Allah, to study the Shariah and to come up with any other conclusion that Islam is a dangerous belief-system, a cult, which only merits the adjective, religon, because of the number of its adherents.
At the same time, I do not believe that Islam and its adherents are irredeemable. I think it is possible to be a Muslim and abandon believing in offensive jihad against non-Muslims and Dhimmitude. Look at the Ismailis, for example. And, yes, I do know, of course, that Sunnis and Shias do not consider Ismailis to be Muslims. However, the Ismailis consider themselves to be Muslims and they do not believe in offensive jihad or Sharia.
In any case, pipe-dreams, such as the one I suggest above, are still at the moment just billows of smoke. Consequently, Jihadwatch remains a candle in the darkness, a bulwark against ignorance, taqiyya and kitman and intellectual corruption (beware Jihadwatch you paid Saudi hacks and Islamic apologists!).
Thus, I congratulate Jihadwatch on its first successful year and I wish you many more to come.
Remember Mr. Spencer and Mr. Fitzgerald, as the vituperation, insults and death threats, rain continually down upon you, that we, the inheritors and protectors of Western Civilization, are supporting you in your efforts and that you are doing us a great service.

My only complaint, as you well know, is the partisan slant of not just the commenters but on occasion you as well.
I just fail to see how it serves our purpose (which I assume is exposing the world-wide jihad for the threat that it is) by injecting politics. When the tide goes out, all the ships go down. I wish there was a way that we could all work together more efficiently.
I realize and admit that "my side" has a problem grasping the true pervasiveness and horror of the jihad movement. But liberals stand to lose much more than conservatives when Sharia comes a-knocking. And--believe or not!--I HAVE convinced a couple of my liberal brethren to join us.
Mayhap after the election, there will be a lull in which we can talk about Jihad and nothing but jihad. But I doubt it.

Everyone agrees next Tuesday's presidential election will be very, very
close. Will 7 million Muslims in America elect Sen. John Kerry?
That's what they intend to do, according to their plan that has not been
widely reported by American wire news services, most newspapers, big TV
news broadcasts and cable TV news programs.
We reported on this editorial page last Saturday that nearly a dozen Muslim
groups in the United States, which seek to guide 7 million Muslims, have
declared their opposition to President George W. Bush and support for Sen.
Kerry.
The Muslim organizations say the presidential election may be decided by
the way several battleground states -- Florida, Michigan, Ohio,
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin -- go.
Since polls suggest voters in those states are nearly equally divided, the
Muslims say they believe that if the 7 million Muslims vote for Sen. Kerry,
that will tip the scales and make Sen. Kerry president.
There are 538 electoral votes. Imagine a map of the United States.
California's 55 electoral votes are surely going for Sen. Kerry. Color
California blue. New York's 31 electoral votes surely are going for Sen.
Kerry. Color New York blue, along with a nest of little states in that area.
Then look at the vast rest of the United States, particularly the South and
West. Most of those states are for President Bush. Color them red.
It is easy to check off states and find about 200 electoral votes for each
candidate. But a winner must have 270.
That's why President Bush and Sen. Kerry are frantically seeking to win
Florida's 27 electoral votes, Michigan's 17, Ohio's 20, Pennsylvania's 21,
Wisconsin's 10, and others that may be in doubt.
The question Americans should be asking is whether the interests of 7
million Muslims in supporting Sen. Kerry correspond with the best interests
of the United States as we are fighting a worldwide war against terrorism
and seeking to establish democratic rule in Iraq.
Will we let 7 million Muslims make Sen. Kerry our next president by
determining the outcome in the closely contested states?
Or do the best interests of all Americans call for the re-election of
President Bush?

You have helped me to realize why people I have met that come to this country to be educated at our universitys, openly despise our nation. To understand why a friends brother was held hostage in Iran for some 400 days to humiliate our nation in front of the world. But, most of all I am grateful to you for the realization that since the 9/11 attack you have shed light on all the confusion of this darkest evil.

The pilot's remarks reminds me of a column that ran in my college newspaper in the mid-1980s. All we have to do is communicate with the Soviet people and we will reduce geopolitical tensions.
Literally speaking, it's true that not all Muslims are terrorists, not all Russians were Communists and not all Germans during the 1930s and 1940s were Nazis. It's also irrelevant. The policy makers in these cases had far more influence than the average Muslim/Russian/German, and had the ability to manipulate the average M/R/G to do what they wanted. In each case, their policy was world domination, with terrorism and genocide as tools to implement that policy. Most of those who disagreed were either intimdated into silence or killed.
That's why this fight is paramount. If secular ideologies can be fundamentally evil, why can't religions be as evil? And Islam is no less evil than Nazism or Communism.

You could have a cake, and blow out its candle while making a wish. "World peace" would not be a good choice, as it has already been wished for by almost every participant in every Miss America pageant since time began, as well as by candidates for class president in schools everywhere, game show contestants answering the host's brisk getting-to-know-you query as to what "you would wish for" if "you could have one wish," and a whole slew of Secretary-Generals at the East River's nest of ninnies. You may want to propose -- To Whom It May Concern -- something a little more plausible and possible. A kiss, the deed to the ranch, that sort of thing.
Kudos to you for all of your hard work.
Persistence is the name of the game in educating the public.
One way of breaking this stranglehold is word of mouth. It is slower, but very effective. I've started by breeching my church. You may not be aware of this but there are churchs who are bringing in ex muslims to educate the congregation.
Have you thought of reaching out to TBN? It is a religious broadcasting company, but their viewership is growing by leaps and bounds. By reaching the moral majority, they can in turn extend the knowledge they gain from people like you. They now have evangaliticals who are exmuslims teaching both G-ds Word as well as teaching the truth about islam.
Think about it.
And remember you're not alone, keep up the good work!

Almost everyday, I read the same kind of crap in french-speaking newspapers (french & belgian) and forums about the "religion of peace" that Islam is supposed to be... But now I react everytime I hear friends/colleagues/relatives say the same things as the pilot in your story.
Reading JW is a great help in those arguments, and Faithfreedom is great too. Some people (including my boyfriend sometimes) think I'm nuts, having my Quran in my bag on all occasion and such... I don't care anymore, I'll do all I can to pass the word about Islam and its danger. A good way is often to simply show people the so "peaceful" ayas in the Quran... and to explain a little bit about abrogation... If nothing else, it raise doubts at least!
Everytime, I tell people to look at your site and others. I wish I had time to translate some papers too...

Before 9/11/01 the only thing I knew about Islam, was that its adherents thanked their God 5 times a day that they (men) were not women. Reason enough to be disinterested in the faith!

This is the first time I've contributed, since I was moved by an experience last night.
Suffice to say I was at the ceremony for Time Magazine's 'European Heroes'. One of the people honoured was Fadela Amara. She founded a charity that helped women that have been abused in the predominantly Muslim areas of Paris.
She collected her award and gave her speech in French. Fadela made some very interesting comments; to paraphrase:-
"This award is special in that it recognises the fight we have in Paris against the Islamic Extremists who are against the liberty of not only women, but everyone around. I am sorry to see that this is also happening around you here in London"

Thanks to you, I have learned the islamicists' tactics: namecalling ("racist," "islamophobe"), lying and deception, rewriting history, demography and its accompanying demand for concessions, and everything else you have exposed here.
The mainstream media may ignore you, but ordinary freedom-loving men and women are slowly but surely becoming aware of the islamicist threat. They may not be able to articulate their insecurities well or handle taquiyya and kitman yet, but with people like you and Hugh, they'll learn.
I work in a school. I know who the muslims are. I'm watching them.
I think the site has value for the broad spectrum of factual news items that I would never had come across in my local "Sanitized" papers or the State owned Media (CBC) here in Canada.
People against bias in the media are usually the ones that can't tolerate tolerance and opposing views that disrupt their version of reality,this is evident when 1 percent of the population demands 50 percent of the media coverage for their cause.
CAIR is a perfect example,with their online petition against Terrorism showing only about 700,000 of the professed 5 Million Muslims in America caring enough to sign it,this indicates
the claim of "Islamophobia" in the media is unfounded. The fact that CAIR wants Islam taught in schools or the Quran in all libraries shows they are the agressors imposing the desires of only about 1 percent of Americans on the other 99 percent.
It's the "Elephant/rabbit" Soup joke that is at work here,the customer complains to the owner that the soup doesn't taste the same as what he
used to back in his Country of origin.
The cook comes out and asks "What's the problem with my Elephant/rabbit Soup",the diner says "I can't taste the rabbit in it",cook: I followed the instruction and used 1/2 a rabbit and 1/2 an Elephant so where's the problem? .
CAIR is the rabbit and Muslims want to have 50 percent of the media flavor negate any taste of the Elephant which is the American majority expected to be diluted to appease the 1 percent of Americans.
JW has stripped off the veneer of the passive and sterilized version of Islam that Westerners are being fed despite the overt violence by those using the Quran to support killing Gods children for Allah.

So I will keep on collecting Hugh's postings, falling further and further behind, while I also know that I can be a real pain in the butt sometimes.
We don't know yet how or when the walls of the MainStreamMedia will be broken down, but it definitely will be when, not if.

I have been coming here for months. Can't remember how I found this site, just surfing one day and linked over. Found it interesting and bookmarked it (like so many other sites) but there was something different about this one and have been coming back daily (almost went through withdrawls when there were problems awhile back).
Yes it has changed me, makes me look at things and people differently. And sometimes you people scare the hell out of me, so much so that I went out and bought my first gun, better a year early than a day late.

JW/DW has become my first stop every morning. The comments feature is like icing on the cake! I thoroughly enjoy - even crave - reading the variety of input from such diverse contributors.
I've purchased several books, and have a growing list for my holiday wish list! I've never read so much in my life!
Before discovering JW/DW in August or Sept. of this year, I could not differentiate between the terms arab, muslim, or islam . . . a sad state of affairs - I'll admit. The terminology simply didn't find its way into my daily routine of potty training, car pools, and college essays. My prior understanding of Islam was limited to the gobbldygook that is spewed (post 9/11) by the msm (i.e. Islam is a religion of peace). I'm not alone with my ignorance as many of my dear friends are in the same boat.
I have been testing the waters (so to speak) by initiating conversations with my friends, most of whom seem to be too polite to engage me further.
I print out the linked source material and hand it directly to each individual. The source material usually provokes further discussion and helps lift that heavy veil of politically correct ignorance.
As for the msm . . .I'm becoming a little more comfortable with this technological marvel - the internet/blogs/e-mail/cut/paste etc.
For the first time in two decades all my children are of school age so I have a bit of time to help you accomplish that goal too. Just say "when".
I do want to thank you Mr. Spencer. This effort is (and has been) a wonderful resource for everyone.

Robert, I just noticed a detail in your words above: a pilot in the Cleveland airport, who assured you that Islam was a peaceful religion and that only a few had attempted to "hijack" it. This is disturbing, whether the pilot believes it, or whether he has been programmed to pretend he believes it.
The crew members of the planes hijacked on 9/11 must have had qualms, as 4-5 Arab men boarded each plane. But they ignored or pushed aside their reasonable fears, because they had been subjected to years of brainwashing, and they also feared litigation, no doubt, or discharge, if they showed undue suspicion toward Arabs.
I do not want my pilots, or any of the crew on planes that I take, to be anything but extraordinarily wary of all Muslims, born into it or "reverts," smiling or frowning, men or women or children. To hear that a pilot still believes, or still pretends he believes, that there is nothing wrong with Islam, is as disturbing as coming across an FBI agent, a CIA agent, an officer in Iraq, who has not yet fully comprehended, or bothered to investigate, the tenets and nature of Islam.
The airlines have a duty not to engage in any farcical sensitivity training about this. They do need to show their air crews, and their ground crews, the passages in the Qur'an and the hadith that will help to explain the sheer madness of what they are dealing with. And no one has any right to prevent them from this indispensable measure.
I am certain that if there is a single large attack, or not-so-large attack, anywhere in this country, the population will be inclined to agree with everything that many posters put here, and measures that one would once not have dared to suggest will be easily agreed upon. That, in fact, may be one of the unstated reasons that Muslims here are not as aggressive, yet, as they are in Europe -- and as long as they fear the consequences of a population that is not nearly as passive, or as defeatist, as that in Europe, that will continue to inhibit them. The more furious our reaction, the safer we will be.
