An encouraging assessment of what has been done so far. From a New York Post editorial (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
Osama's goals have been to sow death and destruction in the name of his own sick religion. But things haven't been working out so well. The 9/11 attack was intended principally to provoke a swift, indiscriminate American military response so terrible it would provoke the Muslim masses to rise against moderate Islamic governments in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.
That, in turn, would have allowed al Qaeda — then enjoying the patronage of Afghanistan's Taliban government — to extend itself into newly radicalized regions of the Mideast and beyond.
But while America's response was swift, it was disciplined, targeted and extraordinarily effective.
There were no uprisings.
No governments fell, except two; the Taliban and Saddam Hussein's.
And while it is true that Osama remains free — however temporarily — it is also true that he's also now the world's most famous homeless person.
Moreover:
* Individual al Qaeda-linked cells throughout the world have no central base to which to turn for aid.
* Training camps are closed.
* Funding sources have dried up.
* The medieval regime that offered him succor is itself gone. Afghanistan just held its first democratic elections.
* Iraq is moving toward free elections — doubtless to Osama's chagrin.
Clearly, yesterday's tape was meant to influence Tuesday's U.S. election — much as al Qaeda caused Spain to show yellow in the War on Terror — though it remains that it was only a tape.
There was no Madrid-like terror bombing in America, but you can bet your last dollar that Osama and his bloody-handed henchmen wouldn't hesitate to attempt one if they thought for even a moment that they could get away with it.
Indeed, they've failed to pull off any such strike on U.S. soil since 9/11.
Thank President Bush — and the U.S. military — for that.
Someday Osama will be rotting behind bars next to, say, Saddam Hussein — unless he's killed first....
Clearly Osama's little lecture yesterday was meant to dampen George Bush's electoral prospects; in that sense, it betrayed a truly fundamental misunderstanding of the United States.
If 9/11 didn't make Americans flinch, it's not likely that an appearance by Osama on a TV channel best known for its videos of beheadings and other gruesome events will do anything more than stiffen the nation's spine.
Again, for the record: If Osama could have carried out an act of terror, he would have carried out an act of terror.
He can't — and that speaks to the fundamental success of the War on Terror.
Read it all. I think the Post is certainly right about Osama between 9/11 and now. Right after 9/11 he boasted that many more planes would soon be falling out of the skies. They didn't. But of course, we're not quite out of the woods yet. Eight years passed between the first WTC bombing and the one that brought down the Towers. The ideology that breeds Islamic terrorists is still alive and well. Until it is combatted forcefully, this conflict will continue.
So where's Michael Moore to aver his claim that
"There's no terrorist threat to America",that Osama had nothing to do with 9/11 and it was a Bush plot acted out by the jews.
No Islam - know Peace
I don`t think where going to read anything like this in the New York Times.
I completely agree the tape works more for Bush than Kerry. But then maybe ObL also knows this. After all, he did spend time in the US when he was younger, has no doubt studied his enemy and is maybe not the idiot we would like to think he is.
Plus, I would argue that Bush administration has done a great job of ramping up the fear levels, in the US and elsewhere - helping Osama's campaign to spread global terror. And Bush has done serious harm to our standing with our closest allies - another thing ObL would love.
As for Iraq and Afghanistan - there's plenty reason to believe that ObL is just as glad to see Saddam go as we were. Now he'll get a new Muslim state. Admittedly, I doubt he would have predicted the fate of his Taliban buddies, but then the situation there is far from ideal. Plenty of chaos and vast areas where neither we or the new government have much control.
So who knows. Best thing to do is try and ignore the crazy bearded man in the corner. Vote for the candidate who you think can do the best job, and who agrees with you on the issues.
Hmmm. I know we have an Andrew who posts here- but somehow I do Not think you are him.
With all the successes listed above, you are STILL a pessimist?
With all the Hundreds of interdictions around the world and in the US that we will never hear the details about- but which Have Happened- and all you can do is Bitch.
Bush! 4 more years!
No selling out to the UN, France and anyone else who stands by and watches mass murders, genocide, and religous war being waged. Not to mention forgetting to Destroy 400,000 tons of explosives and other ordinance before we were forced to go into Iraq.

The reason women are For Bush to win this war:
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/GuestColumns/Taber20041030.shtml
A we have been told repeatedly that Muslims engage in a kind of strategic retreat or truce, hudna that is only temporary.
Usama has no intention of giving up his dream of a united world under the Caliphate. Not telling us that is also no surprise in light of the strategies of taqiyya and kitman.
Pointing out that he hasn't attacked Sweden is also no surprise as Sweden is rapidly Islamizing and demonstrating much more obvious signs of becoming dhimmis than did the Spanish. The French are the more obvious European targets because of the attempt to keep a secular French state. As Islamo-fascism emulates the Nazis, it is also not surprising that they are using Sweden as a gateway to Europe.
Yes, the security of the United States is in the hands of its citizens. It's always been that way. For this reason Americans have insisted on the right to bear arms and to choose our leaders.
When push comes to shove, as Catherine repeatedly points out, we are all members of "the American tribe," a tribe a tribe of the mind and of culture than that of blood ties. The members of this tribe will uphold the Constitution of the United States and will defend the nation and have given up ties to other powers and principalities, especially that of the umma!
What exactly does the author mean by "moderate Islamic governments" in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan? I wouldn't certainly call the totalitarian regime in Saudi Arabia "moderate", and Pakistan, with its Orwellian Committe for the Protection of the Finality of Prophethood that issues death penalties to apostates, is hardly much better. If the point is that Sharia-based states are OK as long as they don't bomb America (and are ready to some co-operation with the US), then the author has forgotten that it is such "moderate" fundamentalist societies that have raised the likes of OBL in the first place, and will raise many more, as long as Islam remains their only legitimate ideology.
AndrewD's comments are baffling to me. The United States has allies. France and Germany are not our allies because they resent and envy our power. The countries that prefer Kerry the wimp to GWB are the same countries that want a weak America. The United Nothing's reason to exist is to weaken America, and it works tirelessly to coerce the United States into meek submission.
Great progress has been made against the implacable terrorsts. We can NEVER negotiate with these mendacious fanatics; they must be eliminated. The only way to win this war is to kill them and their ideology. The ideology has been around for almost 1400 years and it won't disappear overnight. But we can make it crystal clear to all Muslims that we will not tolerate the imperialistic goals of Islam, certainly not in America. First we must openly acknowledge that Islam is a predatory religion/political system with imperialistic ambitions.
We could do much more to stop the Saudis from funding hate schools and spreading their vile Wahabi doctrine around the world, starting with the United States. We could also do more to silence the Islamic clerics who incite jihad and encourage young Muslims to fight in the holy war against the Crusaders.
The last thing we can afford to do is ignore these maniacs and hope they will disappear. That would be suicidal.
The United States and Israel have no connection whatsoever to the numerous Islamic conflicts around the world. Who is to blame for them? The hackneyed Muslim justification for their anger and violence, the Crusades, is ancient history and a limpid pretext for perpetual jihad. Had the Muslims not conquered Christian Holy Lands, the Crusades would have never occurred.
Muslims believe that it is their right, their duty, to spread Islam throughout the world. Anyone who stands in the way or resists is an enemy of Islam. Self-defense against Islam is considered aggression. These beliefs make permanent peace between Muslims and non-Muslims impossible. The immutable doctrine of Islam precludes permanent peace between Muslims and non-Muslims. Until we surrender to Islam, we are Islam's enemies. No other provocation is required.
Am delighted to have found Jihad Watch. Was beginning to feel as lonely as a man with sight in an institution for the blind who believed not what I saw nor cared. Am forwarding your link to all my friends and a acquaintances.
Our Real Enemies are the Moderates - A moderate Muslim is very cunning compared to his jihadi counterpart. He prepares the ground for Islamic conquest of non-Muslim land (Dar-ul Harb or 'land of war') and transform it to Dar-ul Islam (land of Islam). Our friends in Saudi Arabia and Pakistani president Musharaf are moderates. Our next-door muslim neighbor claims to be a moderate. And they continue to deceive us about their goal of taking over the west. We can identify the terrorists and neutralize them easily, but what about the moderates? How to identify those wolves in sheep's coat?
Have been acquainted with a religious fanatic before so I see situation a little differently.
Osama believes Allah 'speaks to him', he is 'The Mahdi' come to conquer the world and convert it to Islam. In latest Tape, notice how he appeals to American voters 'that their government is corrupt
as those in most middle Eastern countries' -Osama is promoting HIMSELF AS CANDIDATE to the American People [crazy as that sounds!]. HE WANTS TO BE ADMIRED, LOVED AND LEADER OF THIS COUNTRY!! Bin Laden has the help of Mike Moore,Al Jazeera and the Guardian to promote these aims ; their adulation and explanations feed the fantasies of
this MADMAN!!! It isn't just a matter that 'the yellow man' [as Catherine calls him] is fed up with being on the run and living in damp, draughty caves. Bin Laden SEES himself as a TRULY HEROIC FIGURE in the guise of MOHAMMED [or perhaps greater] in fact his OVER WHEENING EGO is as much a weakness for him as it was with Hitler.
Andrew is a typical sniveling liberal. Somehow good news looks worse after a liberal gets a hold of it. All this whining about our "allies." We've always butted heads with the French. Besides I'm not worried about winning popularity contests with the world in general or our "allies" in particular. Right about now the French are kissing Arafat's butt and vowing to always be on his side!
I couldn't care less what they think. These are the people that refused to help us in Iraq because they were lining their pockets with Saddam's dirty money in the "Oil for Fraud Program." Our soldiers found French missles in Iraq with current dates on them. There was a lot of information/intelligence/paper trail damning our so called "allies" found inthe Mukaberat and other places.
To hell with capitulating liberals and our back stabbing allies!!!!
It's not about being liked -- IT'S ABOUT DOING WHAT'S RIGHT AND SURVIVING ... GET IT, YOU LIBERAL WEINIES?
The Times Literary Supplement for Oct. 1 contains an article ("Silent Sirens: The language of Islam and how Osama bin Laden betrays it") by Navid Kermani. While the title is misleading, the article itself is rich with observations about the effect of the Qur'an on poetry ("The Qur'an had a paradoxical effect on poetry itself: it secularized it.")on the significance of rhetorical skill ("Nasser....could maniulate the various levels of the Arabic language, shifting from high to popular Arabic, captivating and persuading audiences by the sheer power of his rhetoric.")The author describes seeing the Egyptian film "Nasser 57," where "from the pulpit of Azhar Univesity, Nasser, th esocialist, cries out'Allahu akbar' four times puncutated by short, pregnant pauses...") Lacking his rhetorical skill, Kermani says, other Arab leaders have repaired to "the arabiyya, the ancient language of the poets and the Qur'an. This is particularly the case with Islamists, for the fascination of fundamentalism is also bound up with language. Islamist leaders try to speak pure Arabic, untainted by dialects or foreign words. BGut the Arabic spoken by them is often traite, puritanical, confomrist and, in fact, artificial. It ish, however, perceived as pure and religuos, mythical and, in a banal sense, sublime. The mere code of the language becomes a tool used to legimiate a claim to sacred authority."
And then Kermani describes listening to Osama bin Laden-"he chose antiquated vocabulary, familiar to educated Arabs from religious literature and classical poetry, and avoided neologisms. It was indeed the stiff, puritanical, conformist, artificial Arabic as described above, but it was immaculate. And for the first time, wathinc g bin Laden's boradcast, I fould myself fallung under its spell...it sounds simple, clear and mmodest. In fact, his rhetoric works precisely because of the absence of rhetorical ornament, and a conscious modesty of expression.....In the video his prophetic aura was reinforced by his austere attire and location in a cave in Afghanistan, a clear refernce to the cave iin which the Prophet received his first revelation."
This reinforces the idea, expressed best in Raphael Patai's "The Arab Mind," that rhetoric, as part of a retreat into a mythical past where Arab greatness could not be denied (in the Arab view), is central to Arab life and culture, and helps to explain their difficulty in accepting reality.
For think of it. Suppose according to your belief-system you knew, you were told, you could red, that you belonged to the best of peoples, that as a Muslim Arab you should be on top in every way. But you also encountered the wide world, and came to realize that the Arab Muslims were very far from being on the top, and that it was only the OPEC oil money, which did not reflect any effort, any industry or entrepeneurial effort on the Arab or Muslim part, that accounted for their current significance in the world. To make self-esteem problems even worse, Arabs could hardly plead poverty -- 5-6 trillion dollars in OPEC oil money had been received since 1973. Yet, when Arafat, or Mubarak, or any Saudi, or any Arab or Muslim ruler or tycoon, needs medical care, he still must go to the West, to the Mayo Clinic, Harley Street, the Mass. General; if his children are sick, they end up at Children's Hospital in Boston. How can this be? What did the Arabs do with all that money? Why did they build palaces, turn Iraq and ten other countries into vast ammunition dumps and weapons depots, but not create a civilization?
You believe yourself to be supreme, and at the same time, your failures are obvious to everyone else, and even to you -- so you keep up a running patter to hide reality. No wonder you retreat into a dream-world where words substitute for reality, and those who play act at being back in 7th century Arabia are so fascinating. It is as if an entire culture began to believe in some science-fiction movie, as solace for reality.
And in that science-fiction movie, the Arabs and Muslims always win, and the Hizb-ush-Shaytan -- the Army of Satan, is defeated. Non-Muslims can take the measure of this madness, but it will be Muslims themselves that is, the most intelligent and worldy and best-educated of Muslims, who may not wish to declare their open apostasy and may even cling to the belief that Islam, the "real" Islam, their own private Islam, is not at all what it seems, it really is quite wonderful in some ways that Infidels would never understand -- those Muslims will, confronted with the failures, economic, political, and intellectual of Islam itself, begin to take measures to constrain Islam, to allow in into Islamic societies a measure of non-Islamic thought and ways (perhaps even to permit Muslims to leave the faith altogether, wihtout being killed, imprisoned, or otherwise punished).
This will not happen as long as the Infidel world persists in accepting, instead of rejecting, the transparent pretenses and pretexts of Muslim spokesmen. The clearer it becomes that Infidels can no longer be fooled, the more likely it is that within the dar al-Islam those who counsel the necessity of constraining Islam (even if they do not call it that so openly) will be strengthened -- if for no other reason, then because, in truth, the Muslims desperately need the Infidels for medical care (vide Arafat), for education, for all the things of which a modern, advanced civilization is capable of producing, but which, because of Islam itself, cannot be produced in the lands of Islam.
Plus, I would argue that Bush administration has done a great job of ramping up the fear levels, in the US and elsewhere - helping Osama's campaign to spread global terror

I bet you have argued that President Bush didn’t warn the American people that a terrorist attack could happen before 9/11! Somehow you want it both ways? If he warns you he is playing on your fear, if he doesn’t well that’s just as bad! Andrew you are using standard lefty rhetoric.
We are not as gullible as the left nor as naive!
The Global Jihad is already far more widespread than most people imagine.
Here's a list I've made of countries that are affected in some way by the spreading Jihad - ranging from open warfare and sustained terrorism to increased unrest and raising crime as muslim minorities flex their muscles:

Why Democrats Should Vote for Bush
Tammy Bruce
Friday, Oct. 29, 2004
As a Democrat and a pro-choice feminist, it’s time for me to explain why I support the president, and why other thoughtful Democrats should join me in doing so.
I can’t tell you how many e-mails I’ve received from other Democrats either condemning me for not toeing the line, while others write who are genuinely curious, after all the hate-mongering and demonizing of Republicans and the president specifically, they hope I can ease their fears about what their inclination to vote for the president means about them. The simple answer? It means you’re a confident liberal, a thoughtful person who realizes that game of party loyalty takes a back seat to the safety of your family and this nation.
It also means you take the slogans of “choice” and “radical individualism” seriously. Isn’t it ironic that there’s nothing more radically individual these days than a liberal who doesn’t conform?
For me, Authentic Feminism is rooted in making it possible for people to make the choices that best suit them.
If you have recognized the weakness of John Kerry, and know in your heart a vote for the president is the right thing to do, join me and do it! It can be done with a clear conscience as you embrace the radical individual inside you that attracted you to liberal causes in the first place.
Because some things simply transcend party lines, when in front of that Early Voting touch screen, I stood there as an American first, and voted for George W. Bush. This nation, our lives, and the lives our children require nothing less.
I explain to detractors and supporters alike that President Bush is the man who will keep this nation safest.
The president and I hold dramatically divergent views on a number of social issues of importance to me, and yet for the 3,000 people who died on September 11th, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions mean absolutely nothing to them now.
These issues, while important to me and ones on which I will continue to speak out about, are luxuries in the face of a world war where the enemy is a stateless savage who hunts children and cuts off people’s heads.
We have a responsibility to leave this nation as great as it is to the next generation.
We all know, and must reflect on, the fact that the joy we have in our lives today is due to the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of other Americans who died fighting for this country. Those soldiers did not die because they were promised 72 virgins in the afterlife, they fought not for themselves — they died in the most noble of American causes — so future generations — us — could live in freedom.
I do not take that action for granted, and I have learned that generosity of spirit and commitment to freedom is inherent in each of us, and a duty we cannot shirk.
Those of you with children have a more immediate concern, which is the literal safety of the light of your life.
That little face looks up at you as you tuck her in, and sleeps gently knowing that Mommy and Daddy are there.
That same face stares at you in the morning, with a heart full of hope, limited only by her imagination because you confront, for her, the harsh realities of every day. And these days it’s not just about making a living, it’s about the Beslan school massacre, it’s a new al-Qaida tape threatening Americans at home, it’s about war and mad savages who have specifically targeted children.
I voted for President Bush because having a Pacifist Internationalist in the White House will only embolden those who salivate at the sight of our blood.
Having a man in the White House who stands for nothing will only excite Islamic Fascists who revel in torture and the cutting off of heads. I do not want a man in the White House who is so cold, when asked by a New York Times reporter how September 11th changed him, answers “It didn’t change me much at all.”
While I know a Bush presidency makes my work as a feminist more complicated and demanding, I will love and be grateful for every day I have the luxury of working on those issues. And frankly, it’s not necessarily a bad thing to have a president who encourages social activism on issues.
Liberals make the mistake of thinking a Democrat president is indeed Daddy, who can be trusted in all things. Apathy soon follows that false comfort.
Bill Clinton showed us the decline of the Democratic Party into a gang spouting slogans to make women, gays and blacks feel Daddy was in the house, to our grave regret. What did we get? A sexual compulsive who put Monica Lewinsky on her knees instead of cutting bin Laden off at his.
Yes, there were plenty of Democrats, feminists, gays and blacks in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on those fateful flights. I’m sure you would agree that in their last moments their literal lives were more important to them than party affiliation.
I want a president who will be strongest making sure tomorrow comes, that this nation not just survives, but emerges from this war like the others we have fought, in a world that has been transformed for the better. I want a president who understands this is war, not a “nuisance.”
I know George Bush has made many in the world angry, and frankly, I am dismayed at the hard feelings. A recent poll of Europeans revealed their general belief that Bush has made the world a more dangerous place.
Upon hearing that, I remind myself of the time President Reagan increased arms production and installed more Pershing Missiles in Europe as we faced down the Soviet Union.
President Reagan grappled with European polls, anger and resentment, all of which evaporated when the Soviet regime collapsed.
Yes, they hated Reagan, but he plodded on, never swayed by those polls or made doubtful by others’ hatred. His resolve freed Europe from the shadow of a bear which had no mercy and the blood of tens of millions on its paws.
As a man of faith with a love of this country, Reagan stayed the course, and did what he knew had to be done. He was a leader, and I’m proud to say, one that only America could deliver.
Today, President Bush faces the same polls, the same anger, and the same resentment as he, too, recognizes and engages a rabid enemy of civilization, Islamo-Fascists.
Europeans felt Reagan was leading them to Armageddon, as they now insist Bush is doing. We can’t know what it’s like for Europeans to see such a young nation doing so many things, but one thing Europe will find, again, is that while we may be wild, young and even cowboys on occasion, we have a pretty good track record of making the world a safer and better place.
With George W. Bush at the helm, this time will be no different.
I voted for President Bush because he has freed 50 million people, 25 million of which are women and girls. The feminist establishment, in a shameful exhibit of their hypocrisy, has ignored that fact.
As a feminist, I thank the president with my vote, in solidarity with the millions of Afghan and Iraqi women who now, courtesy of the president and our astounding military, finally have hope, liberty and freedom.
Like all of our presidents, George W. Bush is quintessentially an American. He’s a Cowboy. A Texan. He will never be mistaken for a Frenchman. He’s a Yalie. He’s a man of faith, a husband and father. He’s a man who has fought with and overcome addiction. He’s a man of strength and character.
And while he is also wrong on some issues, if I have to work harder on social issues, I want it to be against a man whom I can admire, who I know, despite our disagreements, honors me in his work to keep this nation free and great.
For those of you who are Democrats and liberals — and I know through my years as a leader in left wing causes, including feminist and gay activism — we all have gone through a sort of conditioning that makes dissent or difference a frightening prospect.
Republicans and conservatives have been decidedly demonized in your circle—perhaps by your own friends and family.
Let me tell you this - voting for the President does not change who you are or what you stand for. I stand for the classical liberal concepts of personal liberty and individualism, and have spent a great deal of my adult life working for those causes. I have found that “Choice” and “Individualism” are only slogans if you never act on them. Sometimes being yourself means straying from the expected, standing apart from your crowd.
November 2nd is a good a day to be a Democrat who’s an American first.

Could be that religion is all isalmic countries have that gives them any sense of indentity. It's all they have to compete with on the world scene. If it was so great, people would want it, they would'nt need to force it one anyone.
Mercedes Benz does'nt need to force people to buy their cars, people can judge for themselves if they want one.
No one wants any "tough sell" on anything, it's a sign that there is something wrong with it if it has to be "sold" to you.
Islam is a defective product. It's rejected.
cudos Catherine.
It sounded to me as if UBL was singing the Libs National Fight Song: "Oh Glory Glory Appeasement", just incase it would appease enough for Kerry to win. I think most of this country and the world that is watching our elections, knows that if we are attacked again before the elections, Bush WINS.
I don't think for a moment, that UBL is wanting a truce, or has had a change of heart. I think no matter who wins, come Nov. 3, we better keep are heads down and our eyes open. Now that everyone knows UBL is alive, he will need to show the world he is still in control.
Americans have been lowering their guard, more and more everyday. You can see it in this article. I believe a lot of us know this war is a long way from being over. Lets hope enough know come Nov.2.

Hi cross -
'I wonder why Japan does not have a muslim problem?'
Well, the Japanese translator of the Salman Rushdie book was murdered (the publisher too, I think), so they haven't gotten away completely!
But you're right, very few muslims there (apart from some street peddlers) so none of the violence and intimidation you get in Europe.
'course if the muslims don't get you, the tidal wave probably will!
BTW I loved your bit about Islam having to be FORCED on people because it's such a lousy product. Too true!

Well, the Japanese translator of the Salman Rushdie book was murdered (the publisher too, I think), so they haven't gotten away completely!
I wish I had heard the news before, I did'nt know about it. I hope Salman is still alive and writes many more anti-islamic books. I will find a Rushdie book and read it cover to cover.
In listining to the ongoing attack on Dubya by The Empty suit traitor how Bush did not, and has not, got Bennie boy, something came to mind that the radical liberal lefties should consider but certainly won't because it would not advance their cause. If Bennie boy could I'm sure he would "get" Bush. Think of the esteem he would be elevated to in the Islamic universe.
In WW2 Roosevelt didn't get Hitler or Togo or Mussolini during the war, but they were "got " eventually. Ike didn't get the leader of N.Korea. Nor did Johnson or Nixon get Ho Chi Minh. I think it might do the Repubs some good if they were to point that little analogy out to the masses. Bennie boy will be "got" someday unless the Empty Suit traitor pulls off a coup and takes the White House.Should such occur than I believe all bets are off on the WOT and we in the USA are going to be in for some pretty tough times for the next four years. Does any right thinking human being actually think that traitor bastard known for his appeasment mentality is really going to fight a war on anything? I'm telling you people, if it's Kerry on top you can rest assured that the anti war lefties will be demostrating for a pullout in Iraq before Bush can finish his concession speech.
Looks like the "Satanic Verses" is the main objectionable book. But looks like he also writes novels on other subjects. I meant to read SV after all the commotion a few years ago but never did, think I will now though.

Yah know, back during the Kosovo war, radio and TV stations were "re-defined" as military targets because they were spouting "serbian propoganda" against the coalition.
Can someone place explain to me why al jazeera is still on the airways ?????
Or is it okay to bomb "military targets" in christian countries but uncouth to target comprable "military targets" in an islamic country??
"I will find a Rushdie book and read it cover to cover."
He writes very 'literary' (= pretentious) novels. I'd say save your money for 'Eurabia' or a book by Robert Spencer!
Been trying to think what Britain is good at these days. Best I can come up with is ---

Cross, I've been reading up on the internet about how many muslims there are in Japan, and there are about one thousand.
However, the group conformity of the culture and the lack of belief in any religion for most Japanese, (80 percent of Japanese are atheists), means that it is very difficult for muslims in Japan to thrive.
There are two mosques in Japan, but no muslim schools.
All restaurants in Japan serve alcohol so, it makes it difficult for muslims to successfully run restaurants.
I wouldn't contribute a penny to Rushdie by buying one of his books, despite his defiant contempt for Islam in Satanic Verses. He is virulently anti-American, just like most left-wing Europeans, including the Brits.
According to Rushdie, and I believe he came to a prestigous American university to join the chorus, America is indeed the Great Satan.
We are responsible for all racism, persecution, genocide, imperialism------you name it. Anything that falls into the category of "crimes against humanity", we are the most flagrant offenders. In fact, we invented many of these crimes before we committed them.
I have no use for Mr. Rushdie. I almost hope the muslims catch up with him. No, I don't mean that.
I'm from Singapore, and we have a sizable muslim population in our country, about 17%. However, we do not have the muslim problem as indonesia, thailand and the philipines because of strict laws against the expression of islamic fundamentalism. Muslims are allowed and encouraged to do good and serve the community, do their fasting bit, etc. But, if they express their desire for jihad, violence, murder, etc, whether in the muslim schools or mosques, the internal security people will have them arrested and sentenced.
I personally believe that no American election has been as crucial as this one.
Think of who would benefit from the lection of John Kerry!
The hordes of phoney intellectuals who have taken pver our universtities and school to produse left indoctrinated clones.
THe infiltratated left media now runnign fifth column activies in the US.
the self haters who hate their country and want all religions destroyed as long as they are not Islamic.
the self loving hedonists of Hollywood and ageing degenerate pop stars who believe movie they are entitled to lecture Americans in morals and who to vote for.
ANd above all of them
EVERY Jihadist from Manhattan to Mecca who would love to carry on unincumbered by a Kerry led America.
Whatever you do do not let these idiots gain control of your country!
Referring to the problems Muslims have coexisting with others as minorities - China, for all it's faults, deals rather harshly with it's separatists in Xinjiang. There is not any of this PC lovey-dovey crap going on there. The Muslims in China are pretty much restricted to a small area, so far as I know, and they don't cause many problems outside of their area. I remember reading about the occasional bombing outside of Xinjiang (Kerry would probably deem it at a level of nuisance, surely not above vexation), but not often. The Chinese have always taken a hard line against Muslims.
Perhaps we could learn from them and stop trying to nestle up to Islam and instead view it with at least a healthy skepticism.

I have noticed that and the amount of gray hair he now has. It looks like its been a hard 3 years. Contrary to some news reports that make it sound like Osama has been in a country club the last 3 years. The man clearly looks like his best days are way behind him.
From http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6370527/site/newsweek/
The intel community could only sit back and watch a taunting videotape of their target acting like a TV anchor. Looking healthy and reading calmly from a script, bin Laden was far from the caricature of the cave-dwelling fugitive.
scandie,
"Moderate" is relative to--uh--the Taliban perhaps. Without countries in the region "friendly" to the US, however, it would have been difficult or impossible to do anything in Afghanistan or Iraq. (Except aerial bombardment or missiles a la Clinton vs. bin Laden.) Whether these countries are "friendly" because of arm-twisting or whatever, they figured in the development of a regional strategy to curtail al Qaeda.
Believe it or not there apparently was a reason for going into Iraq, and it wasn't principally WMDs. The governments that the NY Post editorial called "moderate," are that when compared to what Saudi Arabia and Pakistan could become were the jihadists to gain control. Attacking these "moderate" governments directly would accomplish just that, and achieve the bin Laden gang's purpose. I mean, the "friendly" governments would give way to jihadist ones, unless we occupied the countries--and that as we see from Iraq--would not be such a good idea and require a large commitment of troops.
Pakistan was brought to cooperate in the Afghan action--as much as possible without toppling its government--apparently by the nuclear threat from India that made Musharaf turn to the US for intervention.
Saudi Arabia, the source of al Qaeda, its funding, and many of its cadre, had done little, except giving lip service, to stop the funding and shielding of al Qaeda operations. As the governing princes could not be toppled by US attack without the strong possibilities of jihadists seizing control, another method of prodding them to take action against al Qaeda had to be found. Having US troops north of the Saudi border was a way to accomplish that.
These are not my analyses, nor am I privy to behind-the-scenes information. The reasoning behind many of the apparently senseless acts of the US after 9-11, and a plausible explanation--not an excuse--for them are given in the book "America's Secret War," by George Friedman f Stratfor.
Now, I had read some unflattering statements about the author and Stratfor, some by his competition in the intelligence analysis business and one that I recall on this Comments board. I approached his book with skepticism. expecting some cockamamie rearrangement of facts known to all of us from news reports and opinion pieces.
Instead, I found a plausible explanation of the why behind the what. The main one, for me, ws the answer to why the US administration went into Iraq.
OT, but- More about Iraq that the Left doesn't want you to hear about:
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/joelmowbray/jm20041031.shtml
Usama would like to insinuate that America would be safer with John Kerry than with Bush...
Just like the Spanish thought their country would be safe as long as they pulled out of Iraq...but then there were those arrests of terrorists who were plotting to blow up the High Court in Spain...
Kerry backed Bush's plan in Tora Bora...(see Newsmax article).
Kerry is a pathological liar who has indeed said ANYTHING in order to gain power for himself.

Greetings To All My Family And Friends,
This is the second installment of my updates on what's going on with me and my unit in ------. I last wrote on September 14th, and things are pretty much the same as they were back then. We continue to fly around the clock, 7 days a week, depending on tasking. Tasking is based solely on the level of friendly and anti-coalition activity in our Area Of Responsibility (AOR). Our AOR covers Hit, Ar Ramadi, Fallujah, Baghdad, and the area along the Syrian border. There's been plenty going on lately, and we anticipate more activity right around the U.S.
election time frame. We typically carry Marines, Iraqi National Guard (ING), and Iraqi Special Security Forces around our AOR, but frequently transport prisoners to Abu Ghurayb, and occasionally carry casualties (both sides) to the mortuary affairs people around the AOR. The bad guys are still trying to shoot down helicopters, but our tactics/countermeasures have continued to keep all of my guys safe. We had a suicide driver pull up to our front gate a couple of days ago and set off a Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED), killing 10 and wounding 5. All of the dead/injured were Iraqis waiting to get on base for Iraqi police training camp. The terrorists are mostly killing their own people these days, because it's too hard to get at the U.S.
military personnel; and we shoot back. The argument that they are just fighting the "infidels" is not holding too much water these days. They are trying to discredit U.S. efforts by continuing to wreak havoc and chaos throughout the country. I'm sorry to see that their efforts/accomplishments are what's making international and U.S. news these days. We never see stories about the positive strides we are making in helping the Iraqi people. Here are just a few of the positive things that have happened in Iraq in the last 1 1/2 years: The United States has completed roughly 30,000 projects in Iraq, including the
following: Renovating 2,405 schools and training 33,000 teachers and administrators. We have opened, or are in the process of reopening, 240 hospitals and 1,200 clinics. We have restarted the banking system, and a lot of the Americans serving here are investing in the dinar. We have vaccinated 3 million children against measles, mumps and rubella. We have surpassed the prewar electricity output for the country. We have printed and distributed 8.7 million math and science textbooks.
It's true that "there are no-go zones in Iraq for U.S. forces. But 18 months ago, the whole country was a no-go zone. This is a process, an undertaking of years."
Regardless of how Americans feel about the reasons for us being here, I believe we are doing the right thing in helping these people that have lived under the control of a tyrant for the past 30 years. I also believe that the "Islamic Fundamentalists" must be stopped now, rather than wait for the situation to truly reach our shores. The events of September 11, 2001 were not an isolated incident of terrorists attacking the United States and our way of life. Whether it's the Beirut bombing of the Marine barracks in 1983 that killed 243 Marines, the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen, the variety of attacks against U.S. and allied embassies, or the first or second bombing of the World Trade Center, the "Islamic Fundamentalist" problem has been around for a long time, and will not go away with the launch of a few cruise missiles, as was often the answer in years gone by. If the "problem" is not addressed now, in this place, then it will have to be addressed later, possibly on our own shores. Americans have been known throughout our history as a country that could accomplish the impossible. If we can't help Iraq become a "free" country, then who will be able to do it? The fundamentalists know that if democracy succeeds in Iraq, then it will spread throughout the Middle East, and their strength/control will be lost to the strength of the people/governments that choose democracy over tyranny. It won't be quick, and there will be a price to pay, but if any country can help in this success, the United States can. I believe that this success will help shape the future of the world more than any of us can imagine right now. A young Marine that works for me said it best; when asked if he stood behind his country during this difficult time, his response was "no, I stand in front of it". I got choked up the first time I heard that.
Sorry for the political commentary, but the Marines, soldiers, sailors, and airmen serving as part of the Global War On Terrorism are tired of politicians, political pundits, and news people speaking for them, and trying to "protect us" during this election year. We believe in this mission, and that we are doing good things to help the future security of the world for our children. If our great nation doesn't stand up to help fix the "Islamic Fundamentalist" problem, who will?
Sometimes doing the right thing is neither easy, nor popular. Alright, enough of that. The temperatures here have dropped off substantially, and it's quite comfortable now. The day time highs are in the high 80's, and the night time lows are in the low 50's. We still work 12-15 hours days, by-and-large, but still have time off to exercise, do some reading, and watch a little TV. I got to catch the Red Sox/Yankees series, as I was flying nights during that period, and was able to catch the last few innings of each game. What an awesome come back! Our softball team has a 3-0 record right now, and has another game starting in about 1/2 hour, so I'll bring this to a close (in fine American tradition, the motto on the makeshift scoreboard is "damn the rockets, Play Ball!"). On a personal schedule note, I'll be back in CONUS by -----, and will return to Iraq in ----- of next year. I will have my change of command for the squadron in ------- (anyone that wants to come to Iraq for my change of command ceremony get your reservations in early, the demand is high!), and am unsure of what happens from there (). I have inserted 2 web links below. The first one is my personal photo web site, and the second is a web site one of my Marines put together/manages.
Lots of pictures in there for your enjoyment/perusal. I hope everyone is having a great Fall season, and I'll talk to you all again soon.
